We talk about the best diet, ingredients, nutrients, skin care routines, and more to protect our skin from aging. This weeks guest is Christy Abrams with Designs for Health, one of my favorite supplement companies. Were going to dive into why we work with only professional or pharmaceutical grade supplements over many over the counter brands in the podcast.

Christy is a functional nutritionist with a passion for helping people get to the root cause of their health issues.  She was in private practice for almost 10 years before making a career shift by becoming a Functional Medicine Consultant for Designs for Health in 2020. At 55, anti-aging has moved closer to the top of her list just under cellular health and hormone balance!

    The low-FODMAP diet

    The low-FODMAP diet

This week we're discussing the low-FODMAP diet. It can be frustrating to see patients handed a low-FODMAP food list with literally no other information or guidance. What many people don’t understand, is that the low-FODMAP diet is meant to be treated as an elimination diet to elicit healing and identify a person's unique food triggers. I’ve seen a lot of different ways to apply the low-FODMAP diet but the underlying similarity is that the low-FODMAP diet is meant to be temporary.

The low-FODMAP diet is a dietary approach primarily used to manage symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other gastrointestinal conditions such as dysbiosis or bacteria overgrowth and small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO). FODMAP is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These are types of carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine, leading to gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and other digestive symptoms in some individuals. Since these carbohydrates are poorly absorbed, they arrive in the colon still intact and they are fermented by bacteria, resulting in gas. FODMAPs may also have an osmotic effect, which means they draw water into the digestive tract. These actions in the gut can cause symptoms of diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, and/or cramping for some individuals. Some foods can be high or low-FODMAP depending on certain characteristics, such as processing or the amount or part of a food.

Tune in to learn what foods to avoid and what foods are allowed on the low-FODMAP diet among other guidance regarding the removal and reintroduction of foods.

*in the beginning of this video I use the term irritable bowel disease but for the purposes of this topic I meant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Bariatric Surgery with Dr. Todd Worley

Bariatric Surgery with Dr. Todd Worley

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is a medical intervention designed to help people with obesity achieve significant and sustained weight loss. There are several different types of weight loss surgery, each with its own benefits and considerations. The choice of which surgery is most appropriate depends on individual factors and should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider. This week we talk to Dr. Todd Worley, a bariatric surgeon with Methodist Willowbrook Hospital to learn about all of the pro's and con's associated with each surgery.

It’s important to note that weight loss surgery is not suitable for everyone, and it carries risks and potential complications. Candidates for weight loss surgery typically have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher (or a BMI of 35-39.9 with obesity-related health problems such as sleep apnea, joint pain, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases such high blood pressure, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome and many more). Qualifying patients must have tried other weight loss methods without success, and must be committed to making significant lifestyle changes.

While some may incorrectly view bariatric surgery as an “easy way out” it’s not without it’s commitments financially, physically, and otherwise. It’s still important to focus on building those long-term sustainable dietary and lifestyle changes so that the patient does not revert back to old habits and undo the progress they achieve following surgery. Dr. Worley and I discuss the importance of establishing dietary and lifestyle habits following surgery and how we work together with patients who choose this option.

Weight Loss Variables with Tara Torres, MS, CNSC, CLT

Weight Loss Variables with Tara Torres, MS, CNSC, CLT

I will often see clients in my office who come to me because they’ve grown frustrated with their weight loss attempts so they turn to me to get my expert opinion given my back ground. So I wanted to highlight some the fundamentals of weight loss including how we calculate a persons caloric needs as well as other factors to take into consideration.

The fundamentals of weight loss revolve around creating a calorie deficit, which means burning more calories than you consume. We can do that one of two ways, by either increasing the amount of calories we burn through activity and/or consuming less calories. In order to do that, we need to have a basic understanding of about where that person’s calorie burn and intake is.

In this podcast we discuss the various equations involved in calculating calorie needs as well as meal tracking tools, wearable devices, and the many variables at play when using these estimates. I also highlight other important considerations including gut health, hormones, stress, and sleep management.

All about prescription weight loss medication, Semaglutide with Tifany Brown, NP

All about prescription weight loss medication, Semaglutide with Tifany Brown, NP

This week we’re talking about the prescription medication semaglutide. While it originally started as a diabetes type 2 medication, it has recently become popular for it’s use in weight management. We will be discussing how semaglutide is used, dosing, costs with insurance and without, adverse effects, pro’s and con’s, and more. As a nutritionist, I work collaboratively with a variety of medical doctors and therefore see clients come into my office who are taking this medication. It’s important to understand the importance of establishing the necessary dietary and lifestyle modifications while taking this medication to avoid any rebound weight gain once the medication is stopped. So this week I wanted to invite someone who could not only speak to the effects and use of the medication, but her personal experience using it with her own patients.

Our guest this week is Tifany Brown who is a certified family nurse practitioner with over 10 years of nursing experience and 5 of those years she has practiced as a Licensed Advanced Practice Nurse. Over the last couple of years, Tifany has leveraged the advancement of technology and practiced via telemedicine in over 30 states. She has a passion for empowering others to change their lives and expanding her reach with a virtual practice has significantly impacted that passion. She likes to focus on vitamin deficiencies, weight loss and improving overall healthcare literacy to give people the tools needed to make informed decisions about their health.

Owning your health and wellness journey

Owning your health and wellness journey

In this pre-recorded episode, I was interviewed by our personal trainer, John Waters. We discuss owning your health and wellness journey and different exercise, diet, and lifestyle tips. I dive into a little about my own journey and how I was able to heal and love my body again. It's not always a one size fits all approach. What works well for one person, may not work well for another. We also talk about how comparison can interfere with progress and how to set moving goals.
