Dr Helen Higham delivers a talk on the human factors approach to incident analysis. Dr Helen Higham is Consultant Anaesthetist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Director of OxSTaR, the University of Oxford’s Simulation Centre, and co-director of the Patient Safety Academy at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences.

A brief portfolio of four distinct projects - scaphoid injuries, blunt chest trauma in the elderly, acute gallstone disease, and a mobile x-ray machine with embedded AI technology. Which reflect some of the ways the Emergency Department is trying to develop their approach to imaging in acute care pathways. Drs Alex Novak, Lois Brand and Phil Hormbrey are consultants in emergency medicine at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation.

Professor Shin Egawa delivers the Burdette Lecture with striking array of high-risk salvage surgery for prostate cancer and bladder cancer. Professor Egawa is Chairman of the Department of Urology at Jikei University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan. Dr Walter J. Burdette (1915-2006), who was a distinguished surgeon, clinician and researcher, established Lectureships in Surgical Science in Oxford for the purpose of providing funding to the Nuffield Department of Surgery for distinguished speakers to present an annual Burdette Lecture.

Many of the things that will be in this talk may never happen, some of them will happen and some of them are already happening. How they will evolve and to what extent, and how all of these things will blend into one future will be interesting to explore. Mr George Krasopoulos is a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Oxford Heart Centre and Honorary Professor in Cardiac Surgery.

Mr Vincent Gnanapragasam provides an overview of the big questions in prostate cancer. Mr Vincent Gnanapragasam is a University Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Urologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

Mr Simon Buczacki presents his clinical and scientific data on small intestinal neuroendocrine tumours. Simon Buczacki is a cancer surgeon and scientist from the Cambridge Colorectal Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Professor Richard van Hillegersberg shares his experience with robotic esophagectomy over the years. Professor Richard van Hillegersberg is an Upper GI surgeon from the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.

The talk focusses on kidney preservation with Mr Simon Knight talking about some of the clinical research that has been done, while Mr James Hunter discusses their translational and lab research. Mr Simon Knight and Mr James Hunter are both Senior Clinical Research Fellows at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford.

Dr Anita Makins discusses 'Female genital mutilation (FGM): a global perspective', and Dr Katy Newell-Jones presents ‘Medicalisation of female genital cutting: decision making dilemmas and competing priorities’. Dr Anita Makins is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Dr Katy Newell-Jones is a facilitator and researcher.

Ms Sarah Kessler discusses and shows clips from ‘The Checklist Effect’, the award-winning documentary inspired by the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. Professor Shafi Ahmed talks about his passion around innovation, technology, global health and education, and how they marry together. Ms Sarah Kessler is Producer of the feature-length documentary ‘The Checklist Effect’ and past Lead for Lifebox. Professor Shafi Ahmed is Consultant Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeon at the Royal London Hospital and Associate Dean at Barts and the London Medical School.

Professor Chris Pugh gives a talk on clinical academic training and the role OUCAGS (Oxford University Clinical Academic Graduate School) plays. Professor Chris Pugh is Professor of Renal Medicine, Director of OUCAGS and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Health Education England – Thames Valley.

Professor Peter Friend, Dr David Nasralla and Dr Carlo Ceresa discuss liver transplantation and why they are replacing conventional cold storage in an ice box with normothermic automated, transportable liver preservation. Professor Peter Friend is Professor of Transplantation at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, and Dr David Nasralla and Dr Carlo Ceresa are Clinical Research Fellows in Transplant Surgery at NDS, University of Oxford.
