The Behavioral View 7 - The 2022 Ethics Code Changes

In January 2022, the BACB’s new Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts goes into effect. The new code represents a push toward viewing ethical decision making as a process of using guidance, values, science, and philosophy to make decisions on an everyday basis, as opposed to using the code as a “thou shalt not” list. CR’s team of BCBA-Ds meet to discuss the code changes from an everyday practitioner perspective. Emphasis is placed on how the code was developed, new and removed elements, the social meaning of the front matter and language changes, and the purpose and intent of the ethics code in general.

The Behavioral View 3 - Technology to Extend and Support Direct Services

The Behavioral View 3 - Technology to Extend and Support Direct Services

The clinical application of ABA teaching techniques has been demonstrated to be useful in teaching functional skills in a variety of settings, but barriers to implementation are many. Fewer funding streams exist to support ABA services to transition-aged students and adults. Intensive 1:1 instruction can be time consuming and may also be unwanted by learners and caregivers. Naturally occurring competing reinforcers may result in learner disinterest in the instruction. Technological applications may help to eliminate or minimize the effects of such obstacles to learning. The panelists will discuss some ways technology has been used with success in extending and supporting direct services. Barriers to technology use will also be discussed.

The Behavioral View 2 - Compassionate Care with Jonathan Tarbox, PhD, BCBA-D

The Behavioral View 2 - Compassionate Care with Jonathan Tarbox, PhD, BCBA-D

The science of ABA is solidly supported by generations of research, but in recent years the clinical approach has been criticized from within and without. In this panel discussion, the discussants identify behavior analytic concepts that emphasize the importance of compassionate care as we apply our science. From Skinner’s early writings on the use of behavior analysis to create a kinder world, to Acceptance and Commitment Training practitioners’ application of behavioral principles to complex private events in order to alleviate human suffering, behavior analysis has many examples of ways it can and should be applied in a humane and caring way.
