Inheriting Trauma: A Conversation with author Max Friedman on the Legacy of the Holocaust

In this episode, I sit down with author Max Friedman to discuss his latest book, "Painful Joy." The book explores the experiences of Max's parents during the Jewish Holocaust, and the impact that this had on Max's life growing up. We delve into the history of the Holocaust and its effects on subsequent generations, as well as the process of writing such a personal and emotional book. Max shares with us his perspective on the importance of remembering and honoring the victims of the Holocaust, and why we need to continue to tell these stories. This is a powerful and moving conversation that will leave you with a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and its ongoing impact on the world today.

She also shares some insight and tips for new authors that she has learned on her way to becoming a crime writer.

How to Solve the Literacy Crisis: An Interview with Matt Bardin

How to Solve the Literacy Crisis: An Interview with Matt Bardin

What is Reading? How can we do it better? How can we help promote literacy? A recent study showed that half of US adults can't read at an 8th grade level. I know that on a book podcast, my guest today is going to be preaching to the choir, but I think you will find it a fascinating and helpful interview!

After making some book recommendations, we talk about the literacy crisis and what he is trying to do to help it. Matt walks me through the process that he calls “zincing”, we discuss what reading is, and then he gives some helpful reading hints even for a voracious reader like myself on how to tackle those tough Victorian classics!

Creating While Depressed: a conversation with Cathy Jean-Francois

Creating While Depressed: a conversation with Cathy Jean-Francois

My guest today is blogger Cathy Jean-Francois. She currently writes the blog "Cathy's Cross: a Depressive's Positive Perspective". She has written several other blogs in the past and is currently looking to get her first novel published. Cathy is early in her writing journey, but she's no stranger to the struggle with depression. In our conversation we talk about depression, teaching ELA to middle-schoolers, and writing - even while depressed.

I personally was very encouraged by my conversation with Cathy, and what I appreciate about her is that she is not letting her depression keep her from pursuing her dream and creating stories. You will find Cathy's journey an encouraging one. If you are currently struggling with depression, I hope this encourages you to talk about it openly and honestly with someone you trust, and that you will find a way to over come. Cathy and I both know that the journey is different for everyone, but the destination is worth it.

A New Kind of Hero: an interview with Stephanie Cotsirilos | The Bookshelf Odyssey Podcast

In today's episode I talk with author Stephanie Cotsirilos about her novella "My Xanthi" and about what she calls a new hero: the elder migrant woman. We also talk about our family histories and how their stories affect us even today. We talk a lot about immigration, our forebears, and the power of story and loving across cultures. This is one of the most beautiful interviews I've experienced, and I can't wait for you to hear from the gentle wisdom of my guest today!

Mental Health & Writing: An Interview with Juno Jakob, Author of "Atticus", "The Halloween Book"

Mental Health & Writing: An Interview with Juno Jakob, Author of "Atticus", "The Halloween Book"

In today's episode I sit down with Juno Jakob and talk about his writing journey. We talk about mental health, the necessity to talk openly and compassionately about it, and how his diagnosis of Schizophrenia 15 years ago has led him to write a fictionalized account of it in "Atticus", his new book that is coming out this week. Juno's story is a very personal and heartfelt one, and I know you will find his real life journey just as amazing. Near the end of the episode he will also share with us some writing tips and encouragement.

She believes "that in a few years her generation of people with disabilities will be the most gainfully employed group than ever before. From Unemployed to Published: The Writing Journey of Liz Alterman

From Unemployed to Published: The Writing Journey of Liz Alterman

In today's podcast I interview Liz Alterman, who is the author of several books including the wonderful thriller "The Perfect Neighborhood". She joins me today to talk about coffee, books, the writing life - and how she took one of the most difficult moments in her life - unexpected layoffs - and turned it into an opportunity. We also share some book recommendations and so much more! Whether you like memoirs that make you laugh/cry or mysteries that keep you on the edge of your seat, you'll enjoy Liz's work!
