5 Things to Stop Doing in Your Business

5 Things to Stop Doing in Your Business

Business owners spend a lot of time thinking about the things they should be doing. What are the latest trends to get on top of? What are the newest tools you need to be using? What are your goals and targets for the year ahead?

But few business owners take the time to think about what they need to stop doing.  We all pick up habits, some good, some not so productive.  And sometimes it's useful to take a moment and evaluate what you are doing that could be making your work harder and less efficient.

Stopping these 5 activities will free up time and energy that can be better spent on making your business a success:

    1. Working with bad clients
    2. Checking your email constantly
    3. Taking on work you aren't engaged to do
    4. Storing knowledge in the business owner's head
    5. Mixing personal and business expenses

Join Paul Sweeney (Pretium Solutions) as he explores some strategies for stopping these unhelpful behaviours and improve your business as a result.

Learn the fine art of saying 'no', and see where your business takes you.

    Starting a New Year

    Starting a New Year

Paul Sweeney, the host of The Business Behind Your Business, is back and ready for another exciting year of delving into the world of small business.

We are settling into 2023 now with the Australian summer holidays fading into memory and busy routines returning. We are also seeing a push from many businesses to have staff back in the office after the last few years with many of us working from home. It's a period of adjustment and assessment, both personally and for our businesses.

At this time of year, there is often a rush to set goals.

Yes, that's important, but it is equally important to reflect on your business and ask yourself these vital questions:

    • How am I feeling as a business owner? Exhausted? Stressed? Energised? Optimistic? Something completely different?
    • Why did I go into business in the first place?
    • What am I passionate about? What gives me energy?
    • What's happening in my business that I don't enjoy? What saps my energy?

Time away from your business (on holidays or even just stepping out of the office and finding a quiet space) is a great time to touch base with how you as the business owner are going, both personally and in relation to your business. Are you on the same path? The right path?

Join Paul Sweeney for some important reflection in this episode. Paul also talks about the book 'Your Oxygen Mask First' by Kevin Lawrence, which has some amazing insights on leadership and keeping a good balance in life.

    And remember...
You can listen any time to our past episodes on our website.

This podcast is about you, our listeners.

What advice, what solutions would make a difference to your business as it stands now?  We want to be there for you, bringing you quality information from industry experts. And because this is a podcast, you can listen whenever, wherever it suits you.

So please, get in touch with us and let us know what questions YOU want answered. podcast@thebusinessbehindyourbusiness.com

Why Do We Make a Podcast for Small Business?

Why Do We Make a Podcast for Small Business?

Maybe you've been wondering how this podcast came about?

A bunch of factors coming together resulted in Paul Sweeney wanting to create a podcast focused on content to help small business owners.

First of all, Paul comes from a small town where he saw first hand the implications of local businesses succeeding or failing and how this affected the whole community. This background inspired Paul to want to help businesses and communities professionally and led to Paul becoming a chartered accountant and certified business advisor.

Throughout Paul's career, he has built on this deep understanding and commitment to the wellbeing and success of small businesses. Paul recognised the importance of education for business owners and the difficulties many face in finding high quality advice that is also easily accessible and free.

You throw in Covid lockdowns and even more pressure on small businesses, and The Business Behind Your Business was born.

We hope you gain some inspiration from this podcast and maybe even feel motivated to continue your learning. Your small business will benefit from the time and energy you put into education, and the 'trickle down effect' of business success will ultimately benefit your family and your community.

How Standard Operating Procedures Can Simplify Your Business

Standard operating procedures (or SOPs) are about making things simpler at work and saving time.

The work day is full of so many tasks and it makes sense to keep things as easy as possible. SOPs help you organise and streamline your activities to make the best use of your time.

This is especially important for small business owners who may be wearing many hats and having to carry out a variety of jobs throughout the day!

Amanda Primrose, founder of Streamlined Organising, shares her knowledge on standard operating procedures and the best ways to write and use these organisational tools.

Amanda explores the different types of SOPs available and shares many tips and examples for how businesses can be improved.

    When Accuracy is Required

    When Accuracy is Required

We assume accuracy is beneficial all of the time, but perhaps not always necessary. You can think of situations where accuracy might be sacrificed for speed perhaps, creativity, or just to get the ball moving on a project. Remember the saying by  Catherine Carrigan, 'Perfect is the enemy of done.'

But when is accuracy essential in business?

Accuracy is required in your business' financial reports. This kind of information is used to make decisions for the future, to steer your business in new directions, to assess outcomes and determine fresh solutions. That is why it is so important to keep your business records up-to-date.

It's also useful to think about the opposite of accuracy, which is an error.  And if your business is full of errors, that just means a lot of wastage - in time and resources.

Paul Sweeney (Pretium Solutions) looks at these issues around accuracy, including the best ways of determining when being accurate is essential to your business, and when its not.

Paul Sweeney Chartered Accountant & Business Advisor, launched Pretium Solutions after a long and successful career in accounting and business advisory. Paul credits his passion for small business with growing up in country NSW, where family-run businesses were the cornerstone of everyday life.

Why Tax Refunds are Bad for Business

    Keeping Business Simple

    Keeping Business Simple

The premise of 'keep it simple' has been widely used and helpful for many people in many scenarios. It's about not overcomplicating things which can leave room for problems to develop.

'Keeping it simple' also applies to business. As a business owner, the more complicated you make things, the more steps that you add in a process, the more errors you may be introducing into your business.

Just like the children's game of 'telephone' where a secret message is whispered from one child to the next until the end result is nothing like the original message, the more steps your business processes have, the greater the chance of an error developing.

The key to keeping it simple at work is elimination. Look at all of the steps in a particular task and ask yourself these important questions:

    • Is it really necessary to do this step?
    • Does it assist me in achieving my goals?

    If yes, then carry on!
If the answer is no, then remove the step and shorten the process.

Unnecessary complexity costs your business time and money, so remember to simplify whenever you can. Your time, energy and money can be better spent somewhere else in your business.

Join Paul Sweeney (Pretium Solutions) for this exploration of how you can simplify processes in your business to develop better outcomes, as well as free up your own time.

How eInvoicing Will Benefit Your Business

How eInvoicing Will Benefit Your Business

You may have heard that Australia is adopting eInvoicing, a new standard and network to help businesses with their invoicing needs.

Larissa Walker, the ATO's eInvoicing Business Adoption Lead, joins us to raise awareness of eInvoicing and to share information on the many benefits to businesses.

When we're talking about eInvoicing, this isn't just the act of emailing your invoice to another business and expecting payment. eInvoicing is a new method to exchange invoices that is revolutionising invoicing.

Small businesses will be able to access eInvoicing through their cloud accounting systems. eInvoices are sent to businesses directly through the accounting software via the eInvoicing network by using a business's ABN as an address. It is very simple to set up and use.

Everything is online and more secure than email.

It means there is no more data entry and you'll get more accurate invoices, fewer mistakes and no more lost invoices.

It also reduces the risk of invoice fraud and scams.

Learn more about eInvoicing from the ATO or register your business for eInvoicing.
