    • Winning awards helps your brand and reputation.
    • The way many industry-award systems work makes it incredibly hard for small companies or sole traders to win.
    • Using social media is a good way to grow for any business, including those involved in the preservation industry.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Last week’s job was probably the hardest yet.”

National Apprentice Week - Consultation Service - Mould Pro Meeting

National Apprentice Week - Consultation Service - Mould Pro Meeting

Today’s episode of The Damp Show is an interesting and varied one. Sam has been busy this past week setting up a new mould consultation service and trying out a mould treatment system that has been developed in Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand. As well as killing the mould it leaves a film behind that continues to stop regrowth for a prolonged period.

Sam also has two surveys to tell you about and a new mould consultation service that he is considering rolling out. He also talks about what the PCA is doing for National Apprentice Week.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • There is a big difference between the bespoke damp survey Sam does and the general overviews some other companies provide, which is explained in the episode.
    • Each damp issue has a different solution, which is why it is very important to correctly identify the underlying cause.
    • Sam is considering offering an onsite advice consulting service as well as his standard survey product. It will enable those who want to do the work themselves to tap into his knowledge.
    • The PCA runs apprenticeships for those who want to work in the damp industry.
    • At the moment, the Mould Pro kit that was developed in Australia can only be used by professionals.
    • Mould Pro is an effective mould killer and the film that is left behind carries on killing the mould for a prolonged period of time.

    BEST MOMENTS

“He wanted the correct damp work for each problem he´d got.”

“You are getting the best training in England.”

Surveying The Wrong House - Why You Shouldn't Use a Calor Gas Heater – Being Recommended by Roofers

Surveying The Wrong House - Why You Shouldn't Use a Calor Gas Heater – Being Recommended by Roofers

Today’s episode of The Damp Show covers quite a mix of subjects and includes a funny but informative story about a mistake Sam recently made. He explains why despite Calor Gas being one of the cheapest ways to heat a space using it is actually not a good idea. It can end up costing you a lot of money.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Using a Calor Gas heater is a false economy.
    • Calor Gas heaters chuck out 8 litres of water into the air, per bottle.
    • Now people have had their windows shut tight for a few weeks the resulting trapped condensation has led to a lot of extra damp problem callouts.
    • Invest in continuous fans to keep the air moving and bring fresh air in. It is an efficient way to keep damp and mould at bay.
    • Missing pointing can lead to significant water ingress.
    • If you are a contractor, ask for the house number, the postcode and street name is not enough information.
    • Measure twice, cut once really is good advice. Double-check everything.
    • Antimould paint is expensive, but it works. Don´t be tempted to skimp on things by using ordinary paint. It won´t work.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Ventilation, insulation and a bit of heat, that´s what you need to be doing.”

“For advice, you´ve got all my free stuff on YouTube that you can watch and over 100 podcasts.”

“When I done it before, I knocked on door and the person who answered were staring at me with chef eyes.”

Not a Damp Show - The Good Landlord Charter - Landlord Ignores Report

Not a Damp Show - The Good Landlord Charter - Landlord Ignores Report

Today’s episode of The Damp Show covers The Good Landlord Charter, what happens when landlords ignore the actions recommended in a damp survey. He also explains why it is so easy to misdiagnose the underlying cause of damp issues.

Despite the title, this really is a damp show. A gold mine full of little nuggets of information that others rarely share. Information damp professionals, landlords, tenants, and homeowners can use to keep their homes free from damp and mould, which can lead to life-threatening health issues.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The Good Landlord Charter is due to be implemented in Manchester. There are already signs that it could be rolled out across the UK.
    • A lot of estate agents still think that a free or unbelievably cheap damp survey is enough to tick the box on a mortgage application. This is rarely the case anymore.
    • Check the small print of guarantees. Some damp treatment firms require homeowners to install and run continuous fans. If they don´t and the mould comes back, they may not honour the guarantee.
    • Before having work done, make sure the company has proper public liability insurance.
    • If you are in the PCA you automatically become a Trustmark member.
    • If timber has saturation higher than 20% it is more at risk of fungal attack.
    • Damp surveyors who invest in themselves and take PCA courses are able to earn more. They know more and can solve complex damp and mould problems.
    • Tenants have up to 6 years to complain about damp and mould problems. That is the case even if they have left the property.

    BEST MOMENTS

“The worst thing in our industry is a misdiagnosis.”

“I want it changing to be relevant for 2024 not f**ing 1974, walking around in bell bottoms.”

“I invested in myself, I went to PCA… I spent a lot of hours studying things.”

Alex Morris Former First-Class Cricketer – Part 1 of 2

Today’s episode of The Damp Show is a bit different. Sam is taking a bit of a break from damp and mould to talk to one of his local Barnsley heroes and friends, Alex Morris the former first-class cricketer and footballer.

This fun and light-hearted episode is one of two which are all about Alex´s cricketing career. Alex explains how he went from being a sporty kid to playing cricket for England, Yorkshire, or Hampshire. Alex provides a fascinating insight into the ups and downs of playing professionally.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Starting early and playing for fun provided Alex with the foundation for his sporting prowess.
    • The more chances kids have to play the better, which is why school sports are so vital.
    • Sporty kids need to be encouraged to do well academically too. A sports career does not last forever, so it is critical to continually build other skills to fall back on.
    • Because the football and cricket seasons didn’t overlap, Alex played both competitively.
    • In the UK on average only 2 or 3 of an academy team will play internationally.
    • Alex played professionally for Yorkshire and Hampshire and youth test matches for England.
    • Following your passion matters, sometimes that means making sacrifices like the one Alex made to ensure he continued to play instead of sitting on the sidelines as a reserve.

    BEST MOMENTS

“We must have played 5000 games.”

“I never felt as though I didn’t want to do well at Maths, English whatever.”

“Yorkshire wanted me as backup, which I can understand, but I just wanted to play cricket.”

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The best damp surveyors have experience in doing the work needed to cure the underlying issues.
    • RICS surveyors are not the right type of surveyor to call in if you have damp issues. You need a damp specialist.
    • Injecting silicon for rising damp is nowhere near as effective as the modern damp-proofing creams that can seep into the materials.
    • There are many different types of bridging.
    • If you have a damp issue that was not addressed promptly you can lodge a claim for up to 6 years after the event.
    • If you are working in a mouldy workplace, get your union involved as well as report it.
    • Putting a fan on a timer, is not effective. You need one that runs constantly, they don´t cost a lot to run.

    BEST MOMENTS

“One-fifth of homes in England and Scotland have got mould issues.”

“Every company has different prices because we all have different overheads.”

“It´s a belting piece of legislation….for me it´s like watching porn.”

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • It is never enough to simply clean the mould off of the surface. It will come back very quickly.
    • You can’t skip over one or two of the recommendations made during a damp survey. If you do, one of the underlying problems will still be there, which means the dampness will come back.
    • To make sure air can flow through a chimney breast vent it top and bottom.
    • Dry-flex is thin but effective, it cuts easily and does not curl up at the edges, but you must prepare the wall properly. Simon explains how in the episode.

    BEST MOMENTS

“If you don’t the inside of chimney breast is going to get wet.”

“Things have moved on yet most companies are not looking at new products.”

“A week is a long time in damp proofing.”

Tackling Mould and Damp Issues in Modern Homes - Part 1

Tackling Mould and Damp Issues in Modern Homes - Part 1

In this episode of The Damp Show, Simon talks about some of his recently completed jobs. He explains how he solved a black mould issue in a well-insulated converted basement, and shares the details of a full survey he did for a tenant. While providing an overview of these 2 jobs he covers addressing drainage issues, the benefits of PIVs, the difference between concertina and rigid ducting and much more.

He also explains how to use an app and meters to work out if a property is likely to have problems with condensation.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • It is essential that basements have a drainage system that is accessible. In time, there will be blockages, which will lead to water ingress.
    • A Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) unit will pump fresh air into your home as far as the system reaches.
    • Don’t underestimate the amount of humidity generated by cooking and showering.
    • If you have a North facing wall, it will be more prone to mould.
    • The way modern glaziers fit the plastic strip around windows and doors allows mould to develop. Simon explains how to solve this issue.
    • Rigid ducting or semi-rigid ducting is usually better than concertina ducting. Simon explains why during the episode.
    • For someone who suffers from COPD improving the air quality inside the property is important.

    BEST MOMENTS

    “There wasn’t a drainage system.”

“They had a north facing wall, which were freezing cold.”

“As soon as he gets the heating on, it were like a f**king wind tunnel.”

Damp and Mould Surveys, Surveys and Surveys Again – Part 2

Damp and Mould Surveys, Surveys and Surveys Again – Part 2

This week, Simon once again shares the details of some of the damp surveys he has been doing recently. There is nothing like real-life examples to demonstrate why so many people are starting to have problems with condensation, damp, and mould. The way we live has changed a lot, so the underlying causes of damp are also evolving, which is why the chance to learn about up-to-date, real-life damp issues is so invaluable.

This time he visits a house that was built in the 90s which had a strange cold spot, the underlying cause of which was quite unusual. Simon also explains how he helped a previous client diagnose a damp issue in the new kitchen he had just installed.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • If you have a fan fitted make sure that the ducting around it has been properly installed.
    • Don’t give up until you have found the source of water and fixed it. You don’t get damp without water.
    • Experience matters when it comes to diagnosing damp.
    • Dry zone plaster is a fantastic product, but it has to be used correctly.
    • A cooker hood does not do the same job as a proper continuously running ventilation fan.

    BEST MOMENTS

“When you get a damp patch, there is a source of water….every time.”

    “Think outside the box.”

Converted Cellar Damp Issues and Solutions Walkthrough

Converted Cellar Damp Issues and Solutions Walkthrough

In today’s episode of The Damp Show, Simon AKA Damp Sam shares the details of another cellar conversion damp survey he recently carried out. He walks you through what he found, how he identified the sources of damp and the recommendations he made to solve the issues. This episode provides you with a real world insight into how to avoid these issues in your own property.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Now, all basement conversions that are used for habitation need to be waterproof and ventilated.
    • Older conversions rely on agreements between the tenant and the owner. But it is quite hard to prove that a tenant is happy to live in an unventilated cellar, so they can take you to court.
    • The type of drain installed under a cellar is important. You have to be able to access it to find blockages and clear it.
    • When it comes to sorting out damp, there are no short cuts. If you need a timber or drain survey done, there is no point skipping it because the sources of the damp and mould will not be properly diagnosed.
    • Air circulates through a property naturally. That means damp air can reach other areas and start to cause issues in previously unaffected rooms.

    BEST MOMENTS
“In a basement you have to be able to access the drain to unclog it.”

“I don’t know if I were being a bit mardy, or a bit arsey.”

“There were no air flowing through.”

Staying Warm and Mould Free and Tackling Damp Issues in a Cellar

Staying Warm and Mould Free and Tackling Damp Issues in a Cellar

In today’s episode Sam takes a look how to keep your home warmer and mould free without spending a fortune. He also talks about making sure that your gas boiler is actually safe and working efficiently.

Sam also shares the details of an interesting and complicated cellar job he is working on. Explaining the approach he has taken to diagnosing why it has several different types of mould, as well as standing water.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • You only have to have the heating on at 10 to 15 degrees to stop the air in a home from holding moisture. When the air is too moist, mould thrives.
    • Open the windows a crack when you cook.
    • Heated blankets are good for keeping you warm, but to take proper care of your home you still need the heating on low in the background.
    • Have your boiler serviced, every year.
    • Sometimes you will find more than one type of rot/mould in the same cellar space. Therefore, solving all of the issues requires a multi-discipline approach.
    • When looking at a damp cellar, insect the drainage system. When you do, be sure to follow the entire system through, so that you identify all of the issues.

    BEST MOMENTS
“You could feel it as soon as you went in, it where colder inside than it were outside.”

What Makes Damp Proofing Pros Worth the Price

What Makes Damp Proofing Pros Worth the Price

Damp Sam shares stories from his week in the damp proofing business. He details two email exchanges - one with a potential customer who wanted an inexpensive quote and another who questioned his credentials. Sam explains why he charges more than less qualified contractors and refuses to enter "races to the bottom" on pricing.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Sam charges more because of his qualifications and expertise, which homeowners should value when hiring contractors.
    • He avoids giving quotes when homeowners are "price shopping" around.
    • Communication misunderstandings can happen easily by email/WhatsApp versus phone calls.
    • Serviced accommodations often make more financial sense than HMOs for landlords.
    • Contractors should have proper qualifications before offering damp proofing services.
    • Trust between contractor and homeowner is important.
    • Podcasts and social media are good ways for Sam to share damp-proofing knowledge.
    • Sam is passionate about helping homeowners with damp issues.

    BEST MOMENTS

"I don't enter the race to the bottom. If you want to go and get five quotes, fair enough, but don't f***ing ask me."

"So companies do put the jobs on and showcase what they've done...they'll take you through what's happened"

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Addressing mould, condensation, penetrating, rising, or traumatic damp is the responsibility of the landlord.
    • When a tenant or a professional notifies a landlord that there is a damp and mould issue, it is crucial that the landlord takes action.
    • Landlords should not wait to receive medical evidence; they must act immediately.
    • Assessment of the issue should be carried out by a qualified professional.
    • Thermal cameras can be used to find cold spots and leaks.
    • Data loggers can help to identify humidity issues.
    • Large areas of mould should only be tackled by a professional.
    • In some cases, it might be necessary to work with tenants and educate them so that they change their habits to reduce the possibility of mould coming back.
    • Adequate ventilation is essential, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
    • Use automated ventilation systems. The low-carbon versions cost about 49p per year to run.
    • Ask tenants to keep windows in the vent position.
    • Install trickle vents, air bricks and insulation.
    • Address cold spots.
    • Ensure tenants know how to use their heating systems.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Tenants shall be informed about what is being done to resolve the issue and what are the likely timescales for the work.”

    “Always use proper protective equipment.”

“Energy efficient homes are typically less prone to developing damp and mould.”

Understanding & Addressing The Health Risks of Damp & Mould In The Home Part 3

Today’s episode of The Damp Show is part 3 in Sam’s understanding and addressing the health risks of damp and mould series. In it, he reveals which types of people are more likely to be at risk of suffering from this issue, when the council can get involved and what landlords should do if tenants will not give them access to carry out repairs.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • People who live in rented accommodation are more likely to struggle with getting damp and mould addressed. Sam explains which demographics are most vulnerable.
    • Some landlords are taking the fine rather than tackling the underlying issues. Now fines can be unlimited, this is less likely to happen.
    • Local councils have the right to act in category 1 or 2 cases.
    • Landlords need to record occasions when they visit a property to make repairs and are not given access. They can use this to appeal.
    • Legal aid is available for some tenants and there are solicitors who will represent them on a no win no fee basis.

    BEST MOMENTS

“The ombudsman in my opinion is going to be overwhelmed.”

“When undertaking controlled work, there is a legal duty to comply with building regulation.”

“There can be more than one enforcement rules route.”
