AI In the Cloud Vs. On the Hardware: Where Tiny ML Shines

AI In the Cloud Vs. On the Hardware: Where Tiny ML Shines

Tiny machine learning is broadly defined as a fast growing field of machine learning technologies and applications including hardware (dedicated integrated circuits), algorithms and software capable of performing on-device sensor (vision, audio, IMU, biomedical, etc.) data analytics at extremely low power, typically in the mW range and below, and hence enabling a variety of always-on use-cases and targeting battery operated devices.

Anders Hardebring, CEO and Co-Founder of Imagimob is helping companies imagine what they can do by bringing machine learning into embedded devices. Imagine audio classification without any data ever leaving the embedded device. Or sensing that a machine is about to break and turn it off in a few milliseconds. Even when the connection is down.

Trade, Tariffs, and Compliance in the Electronics Industry

Trade, Tariffs, and Compliance in the Electronics Industry
Foreign-Trade Zones (FTZ) are secure areas under U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) supervision that are generally considered outside CBP territory upon activation. They are usually located in or near CBP ports of entry and are known as the United States' version of free-trade zones. We chatted with Teri Ivaniszyn, VP of Operational Excellence and Trade Compliance at Digi-Key, about FTZss to learn more about her accomplishment of establishing the largest FTZ. According to Ivaniszyn, the largest Foreign Trade Zone is calculated based on the number of packages and what's shipped out. Because all of the other Foreign Trade Zones that have been set up have traditionally been for large carriers by sea or by train, they put them in those big containers and ship them out. "The thing with Digi-Key is we're shipping out one box at a time. One box here. One box there, which has made it very difficult to get set up because they were used to the big containers," said Ivaniszyn. This process of shipping single line items was very different for the government and for the carriers. It's been quite a learning process for the Digi-Key team and challenging to execute. (Not even Amazon has an FTZ that ships small packages!) In the end, with all the tariffs coming in, it helps Digi-Key defer duties, taxes, and tariffs, so the company is not sitting with liability on the shelves. That helps the end customer and suppliers because they don't have to push the charges through. So they're not incurring the costs, and then Digi-Key's customers outside the United States are not burdened with any tariff charges. Listen in to the full episode.

The Supply Chain and Tech Advancement in 2022: What to Know

The Supply Chain and Tech Advancement in 2022: What to Know
Michael Knight has one word to sum up 2021: Cluster! But despite all the uncertainty and delays, there's a silver lining and hope on the horizon. The key theme of all this is demand has been growing in all technologies, and in all and market segments, and on top of that what's been happening, there's been some new market segments that have really caught fire and are adding to the pressure -- the demand pressure on the whole supply chain. For example, electric vehicles are coming into their own, plus you've got medical wearables, AI is consuming more and more compute power. There's a ton of IoT applications emerging, especially the remote stuff that's battery enabled. So, we've got this pervasive, quickly expanding demand on the supply chain, and what's made 2021 so difficult and dominated the headlines is that the supply chain has not been up to the task. The big question about 2022 is what's going to be different? We'll dive deep into that and more valuable industry insights with Michael Knight in this kick off episode of 2022.
