They dissect the potential impacts, benefits, and challenges of implementing direct admissions strategies at institutions.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Direct Admissions Explained: Simplifies the college application process by allowing students admission based on predetermined criteria, such as GPA and test scores, without essays or lengthy interviews.
    • More Sizzle Than Steak? While it’s celebrated for its potential to streamline the college application process and enhance accessibility, its actual impact on enrollment growth might not meet expectations. They emphasize that direct admissions tend to generate a lot of excitement (the sizzle) but may not substantially change enrollment numbers (the steak).
    • Application Volume vs. Enrollment Starts: A critical examination reveals that an increase in application volume, spurred by direct admissions, does not necessarily correlate with an increase in students actually enrolling.
    • Direct Admissions as Expensive Lead Gen: The conversation shifts to describe direct admissions as an expensive form of lead generation rather than a surefire enrollment strategy. This viewpoint challenges the perception of direct admissions as an end-to-end solution, instead framing it as the beginning of a longer engagement and conversion process.
    • Future Directions and Innovations: The hosts consider how direct admissions could evolve and what it means for higher ed marketing and student engagement strategies.

Focus on Value: The American Mindset and PA’s Proposed Plan

Focus on Value: The American Mindset and PA’s Proposed Plan

Mallory and Seth dive into a new Dentsu Consumer Navigator study on the American Mindset. They explore the potential impact of economic uncertainty on higher education enrollment and the rise of alternative credentials. The conversation then shifts to the Pennsylvania governor’s proposed tuition reduction plan, its implications for different types of institutions, and the need for equitable implementation.

    Takeaways:

    • Consumer confidence in the economy is declining, despite the stock market performing well.
    • Historically, higher education enrollment increases during economic downturns, but this time may be different due to decreased confidence in the value of a college degree.
    • Marketers should focus on increasing scholarship opportunities and positioning on value rather than price.
    • Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro recently unveiled a tuition reduction plan for low- and middle-income students. But is the plan fair and will it undercut the cost saving value prop for the state’s community colleges?

Beyond Bricks and Clicks: Shaping the Future of Higher Ed Marketing

Beyond Bricks and Clicks: Shaping the Future of Higher Ed Marketing

In this inaugural episode of the Higher Ed Pulse, co-hosts Mallory Willsea and Seth Odell cover two newsworthy topics from the past week of higher education marketing and enrollment management.

First up, is the traditional college experience over? The hosts discuss how the Kansas Board of Regents allocated $16.5 million so Kansas universities could demolish old buildings to avoid $80 million in repairs. A recent article from Jeff Selingo hones in on the current trend: academic innovation, applying technology in teaching and credentialing and aligning with evolving student preferences and technological advancements.

Then the hosts turn to a viral LinkedIn post from Jaime Hunt. Jaime's reflections offer a thought-provoking perspective on higher education marketing, urging professionals to look beyond conventional metrics and focus on the deeper impact of their work.

    Takeaways:

The future of higher education is changing, with a shift towards tech-first education and a focus on microcredentialing.

The criteria for selecting an institution is evolving, with younger generations having different priorities compared to previous generations.

Implementing high-tech solutions in higher education can widen the gap between institutions that can afford them and those that can't.

Higher ed marketers should focus on impact, transformation, and storytelling to make a positive difference in students' lives.

Ep. 183: Live from AMA: The Future of Organic Social in Higher Ed

Ep. 183: Live from AMA: The Future of Organic Social in Higher Ed

In this podcast episode of The Enrollify Podcast, recorded Live from AMA,  Zach Busekrus sits down with Jenny Li Fowler, the Director of Social Media Strategy at MIT to discuss the future of organic social strategy in higher education.

Jenny shares her experience and insights on organic social media, emphasizing its continued relevance despite perceptions that it's losing ground to paid strategies. She introduces her new book, Organic Social Media: How to Build Flourishing Online Communities, which focuses on transferring knowledge about social media strategy based on her experiences and learnings.

In this episode, Zach and Jenny discuss Jenny's "six M's of social media" - Mission, Message, Management, Medium, Metrics, and Monitoring - and chat about the importance of strategy over tactics in choosing the right channels for social media engagement.

Furthermore, Jenny talks about the "three scroll rule" - a strategy ensuring diversity and representation in MIT's social media content, ensuring that within three scrolls, a follower can see a comprehensive story of the institution.

Finally, the podcast touches on the future of social media, with Jenny predicting a shift towards more "owned spaces" as opposed to "rented spaces" on existing social media platforms. She believes that this shift will provide a safer and more controlled environment for content.
