Today on the show Bruce wanted to do a quick talk about the common phrase "we'll get there in the end" and why he views it as a damaging frame of mind for any business owner. The idea of trying to reach your goal “in the end” somewhat implies that until retirement your business has been struggling, which isn't a great result.

As a business owner, wouldn't it be great to reach what you view as "in the end", right now? instead of striving for some concept of the future, why not aim for right now? Season 4 Episode 35 - What's Your Problem? I'm Not Getting Enough Profit

This week we're doing our monthly segment, what's your problem, where we ask the members of the joinery business hub Facebook group to let us know what's been bothering them lately so we can discuss it on the podcast. This week's leading response was that business owners feel they're not getting enough profit. This is obviously a common response and a common issue most business owners have, even outside of joinery. Given how broad of a topic this is, Bruce cover's just a piece of it.

Everything in business has a cost. People, materials, overhead are all something you should be well aware of as a business owner and how the costs of these things affect your profit. But is there more here that you could be paying attention to? Season 4 Episode 33 - How To Schedule An Ideal Work-Life Balance

Season 4 Episode 33 - How To Schedule An Ideal Work-Life Balance

When it comes to creating a schedule for you to work around, it can often be really hard trying to properly create a good work-life balance. How much work is too much? When is it okay to allow yourself some downtime? Giving yourself an endless to-do list might seem good on paper, but more likely than not you'll find yourself not giving every task your all, and slowly stifling your own creativity.

Today on the podcast we have our Marketing Joint team member Clare Mokdissi here to talk to us about her methodology around creating a schedule that works for you, and why dedicating time to specific tasks rather than creating lists can help increase creativity. Creating a good work-life schedule might seem like an elusive idea, but with a new perspective around your time at work vs not at work, and some re-evaluation on what is and isn't important, you might actually find it easier than you think.

Season 4 Episode 32 - Shop Talk: What To Do About Supply Reps Showing Up Unannounced

Season 4 Episode 32 - Shop Talk: What To Do About Supply Reps Showing Up Unannounced

Today on the show we're doing one of our Shop Talk episodes where we go over some aspect of running a joinery business. Today Bruce talks to us a bit about the issue of supplier reps showing up on your doorstep unannounced, expecting you to drop everything so they can show you what they offer.

This is an issue I'm sure everyone in the joinery industry has experienced at least once, and frankly it's not something that should be expected. Your time as a business owner is far too valuable to expect you to drop everything for someone who hasn't even made the effort to call before showing up, and if this is the kind of thing you allow to happen it could mean there's some greater issues with your factory you're not addressing.

With the supply reps it's important to be frank, and today Bruce walks us through some ways you can address these reps, as well as some new perspectives on why we shouldn't let this be an industry standard.

Season 4 Episode 31 - Episode Replay - Time to Recontextualize Your Dreams

If you’re someone like me, you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy the idea of being in a secure, safe job, so you’ve gone out and started your own business. Often in that early period when things are going well, you can feel bulletproof, which is a fantastic feeling! Eventually however you’ll have some unsuccessful moments, make a mistake here and there, and/or burn yourself out on work. As things go along eventually you’ll lose that feeling of being bulletproof, and for some forget the passion they had that made them start a business in the first place.

If this is at all you then this is the episode for you! In todays episode I go over the importance of re-evaluating that passion that got you here in the first place, and spending some time to actually retool your goals and aspirations so you can feel that same level of enthusiasm you did at the start. Knowing how to run a successful business is important, but the first step is always to feel motivated to do so.

Season 4 Episode 30 - What's Your Problem? Can't Find "Good People" With Tiffany and Nigel Newman

Season 4 Episode 30 - What's Your Problem? Can't Find "Good People" With Tiffany and Nigel Newman

This week's episode is one of our monthly What's Your Problem Segments where we reach out to the members of The Joinery Business Hub on Facebook to let us know what's been bothering them lately.
this week's topic is one we've covered a bit, the ever present struggle to quote "find good people". Since we have offered our thoughts on this topic many times before, we thought we'd get our Marketing Joint Manager Tiffany Newman, and our Lean Specialist coach Nigel Newman to talk about this topic as they've got a lot to add to the conversation.

The topic of finding good people is one we hear a lot and often from a misguided perspective. What a lot of business owners surprisingly don't know is that they've already got good people already working for them, it's just the process they follow that needs to be improved. Tiffany and Nigel Have seen this a lot in the joinery industry, owners searching for good people when they can't recognise the good people they already have working for them.
