Creatively Structuring Practice Sales to The Next Generation of Optometrists with Michael Pote

Creatively Structuring Practice Sales to The Next Generation of Optometrists with Michael Pote

Evon is joined by Michael Pote of The Growth Cooperative to dive into creative ways to structure the sale of a practice from one optometrist to another.

They talk a little bit about the structure of private equity sales and OD-to-OD sales, and the pros and cons to both. They then dive into creative ideas to make that transition work for both parties, including structuring the purchase over a period of time rather than all at once. We also talk about what makes a better prepared buyer and a better prepared seller.

With the ongoing concern of keeping more independent, private optometry practices in the hands of optometrists, Michael brings great ideas for helping the next generation of owners buy into even the largest of practices.

Improving Student Loan Outcomes When Filing Taxes Married Separately

Improving Student Loan Outcomes When Filing Taxes Married Separately

Using income-driven repayment (IDR) plans toward student loan forgiveness can be a favorable way for optometrists to manage student loan debt. In this episode Evon talks about how strategically changing the way you file your taxes when married can improve the long-term math toward student loan forgiveness.

He dives into how filing taxes married filing separately can exclude your spouse's income from your student loan calculation on an IDR plan and impact the family size for the calculation - as well as the tax consequences of changing your tax filing status.  He also talks about how community property states open up even more planning opportunities for student loans when filing separately.

Lastly, he talks about important considerations to keep in mind around the tax filing deadline and your recertification date.

Why Active Investment Management Fails with Andrew Berkin, PhD

Why Active Investment Management Fails with Andrew Berkin, PhD

Andrew Berkin, PhD - head of research at Bridgeway Capital Mangement and author of The Incredible Shrinking Alpha - joins the podcast to discuss why active investment management fails, and why you're unlikely to get the outperformance you're looking for.

    Evon and Andrew dive into:

    • Research behind why active management fails - both for individual investors and professional managers
    • What an "efficient market" means, and why stock markets are efficient
    • What is passive investing?
    • Why passive investing goes beyond index funds
    • What investor SHOULD focus on, if not trying to actively pick investments.

Andrew brings so much wisdom and expertise to the conversation. Hopefully this helps optometrists better understand their own investment approach and why it may or may not make sense.

And hopefully it encourages you to take an evidence-based, research-based approach to investing, just like you might take an evidence-based approach to optometry.

    • Planning for financial independence and retirement

    • Risk management, contingency planning in the practice, and estate planning
    • Keep an eye on the other financial goals in your life outside the practice

    • Getting familiar with the three core financial statements in your practice - the balance sheet, the profit and loss statement, and the statement of cash flows.
    • Getting to know the internal, operational key performance indicators that matter to your business (the leading indicators).
    • Focus on actual cash flow of the business, the differences between actual cash flow and profit, and creating a framework for deciding what to do next with cash as it comes in.
    • Building appropriate cash reserves in the practice
    • Preparing to pay yourself as the owner
    • Preparing for tax payments and withholding and tax planning opportunities.
    • Establishing a retirement plan in the practice.
    • Protecting yourself from the financial risks with appropriate insurance coverage.
    • Keeping in close contact with your professionals.

Intro to Optometry Practice Valuations with Erich Mattei

What's the value of your optometry practice? What goes into a practice valuation?

Erich Mattei of Akrinos joins the podcast to provide an introduction to optometry practice valuations.

Erich dives into his work with valuations, three general approaches to valuating businesses, and when practice owners should start considering their practice's value.

Lastly, he discusses how valuations can be improved and ways current valuation methods and recent high valuations are creating roadblocks for the successful transition of independent practices from owner optometrist to the next generation.
