The Parable Podcast with Danielle Zapchenk

The Parable Podcast is a place for conversation and stories that illustrate God's presence in our everyday life. A Parable is simple story used to illustrate a lesson. We see Jesus in the Bible sharing these with others so well. And the truth is, we all have stories big or small. Sometimes they are really funny, messy or difficult …. whatever it is you can look back a specific moment or a season in your life and say without a doubt God taught me "this." Can't wait for you to listen in.

    Sermon Notes

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." - Ferris Bueller

    Finding Awaited Hope

So I wait for the Eternal—my soul awaits rescue—and I put my hope in His transforming word. My soul waits for the Lord to break into the world, …O Israel, ground your hope in the Eternal. For in the Eternal lives the most loyal love, and with Him comes the most abundant redemption. Psalms 130:5-7

Qavah means to wait actively with anticipation, hopefully watching for God to act.

My soul waits for the Lord to break into the world….O Israel, ground your hope in the Eternal.

    Finding newfound hope

Gaining hope, I remember and wait for this thought: How enduring is God’s loyal love; the Eternal has inexhaustible compassion. Here they are, every morning, new! Lamentations 3:21-23

    Finding Borrowed hope

“We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. Hebrews 6:18 Message

Hebrew feminine translation of Qavah is Tikvah which is described as combining multiple of strands and coiling those into a single, much stronger cable – Something you can grab hold of.

“In the face of adversity and pain, we can grab ahold of this promise. And we can cling to ‘tikvah’… which acts as a cord that tethers us to God’s throne when we don’t have the capacity to see a different type of future. – Joy Flores

    Ask for Hope
    Pay attention
    Borrow Hope

We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us. Hebrews 6:18-20 Message

    Reflection Questions

    1. Take a few minutes to think and journal about past, present, and future hopes.  How has God been in your past, and currently, and how he will be there in the future for you?

TPP #122 | Choosing Joy Changes our Relationships with Danielle Zapchenk

Do you find joy in your relationship with others? Welcome to the Parable Podcast, today I would love to share one of my recent messages from our home church as we take a little holiday break here at the Parable Podcast.

First, let me say thank you! When you have so many options to choose from, thank you so much for being a listener. 2023 has been a great year and I have been so encouraged by all of these stories. Please enjoy this message wherever it may find you today.

What happens if joy is not separate from pain? What if joy and pain are fundamentally tangled up with one another? Or even more to the point, what if joy is not only entangled with pain or suffering, or sorrow, but is also what emerges from how we care for each other through those things? What if joy, instead of refuge or relief from heartbreak, is what [bursts forth] from us as we help each other carry our heartbreaks? - Inciting Joy by Ross Gay

    Sermon Notes

    • Choosing joy changes our relationship with others.
    • Happiness is how you feel when good things happen to you.
    • Joy is an attitude and way of life that you choose despite what happens to you.
    • “Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy.” Philippians 4:8
    • “More than anything you guard,……protect your mind, for life flows from it.”
      Proverbs 4:23 CEB
    • But even if we Choose joy, does it change our relationships with others?
    • “Nevertheless, it was admirable of you to participate in my affliction. Philippians 4:14

    Reflection Questions

    1. Remember Happiness is how you feel when good things happen to you. And oy is an attitude and way of life that you choose despite what happens to you. Write down 3 things in each of those categories and thank God for the ways Joy shows up in your life

    • Start simple when practicing spiritual disciplines like fasting, and have realistic expectations.
    • Gratitude is a skill that can be learned and cultivated, leading to a deeper understanding of one's identity and value.
    • Embrace the simplicity of faith and encounter God in the everyday moments of life.

    Reflection Questions

TPP #120 | Struggling Under the Surface with Reece Maopolski

Have you ever had a moment where overwhelming anxiety has bubbled up from beneath the surface? Joining me today is vocalist and Guitarist from the Band Brotality, Reece Maopolski, who shares with us about understanding his mental health. We were fortunate to see Brotality play not once, but twice this summer on tour. And Reid loved every minute of it.

Reece discusses the highlights and challenges of being on tour as a musician, the conviction to pursue music, and the struggle with discouragement. He shares about encountering Jesus and deepening his faith, as well as his battle with anxiety and depression. Plus, the importance of seeking help and finding a community to overcome.

In this conversation, Reece shares his journey of finding community, dealing with anxiety attacks, and staying focused on God. He emphasizes the importance of recentering throughout the day and the power of community as a part of spiritual growth. Finally, he reflects on the needs of the next generation and the role of the Church in their lives. Thanks so much to Reece, I loved his heart and honesty in discovering why mental health matters.

    Takeaways

    • Finding community and embracing Christian fellowship is essential for spiritual growth.
    • Recentering throughout the day and staying focused on God helps overcome anxiety and maintain a strong faith.
    • Sharing the message of Jesus in secular spaces can be challenging but is an important mission field.
    • The next generation needs to see the separation between imperfect Christians and the perfect love of Jesus.

    Reflection Questions

    1. What is bubbling under the surface for you?  Maybe it is going for a walk, journaling, or talking to a loved one to break through some of that pent-up emotion.

    2. Maybe you are in a season of drift without even knowing it.  Take stock of your relationship with God. Do you need community, a commitment to a spiritual practice, or just a simple conversation to get you back on track?  Pray about what is your next steps.

TPP #119 | The Power of Listening with Robin Thompson

In this episode, Robin Thompson, co-founder of Zoweh, discusses the process of recognizing and repairing the ways she may not have loved her children well in their growing-up years. She shares how engaging in narrative-focused trauma care helped her understand her own story and equipped her to listen to others. Robin emphasizes the importance of listening to ourselves and offers insights on how to engage in meaningful conversations with others. She also shares her hope for people to have authentic, life-changing encounters with God through Zoweh's resources and events. In this conversation, Robin discusses the offerings and resources provided by her organization, as well as the importance of being better listeners.

Robin is learning that it's okay to not be okay, to hold complexities, that there is room for far more than she ever thought, and that her voice is needed. Mourning with those who mourn and rejoicing with those who rejoice is one of Robin's great passions. She loves being home, adores the quiet, and loves laughing and traveling with her handsome husband Michael. Time with their three grown daughters is especially treasured.

    • Avoiding bright siding and allowing space for silence can create a safe and supportive environment for others to share their stories.
    • Zoweh offers resources and events that aim to help people have authentic, life-changing encounters with God.
    • Being a good listener is essential for connecting with others and deepening our relationship with God.

TPP #116 | Sweeping It All Under the Rug with Anna Maria Mattey

TPP #116 | Sweeping It All Under the Rug with Anna Maria Mattey

Would you say you can easily sweep things under the rug in your life? Meet Director and Engagement Strategist of Safe Families, Anna Maria Mattey shares how she had to be okay with God's direction in her life. Anna Maria loves empowering and equipping others to become more of who God made them to be. This deep-seated call comes from the ways God has used others to help transform her own story of brokenness, insecurity, and codependency into one of healing and redemption. She has been a Pastor, teacher, leader, and Groups Director for Willow Creek’s 7 campuses. She yearns to draw people closer to God and one another, in community - the way we see it depicted in the Acts 2 Church; breaking bread, giving to those in need, sharpening one another, inviting others in, baptizing them, etc. The life we are called to here on Earth. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Anna Maria Mattey.

God, even if it does not heal my marriage, my husband's addiction, even if it got to the point that he didn't survive... I remember being on my knees saying God don't.
    - Anna Maria Mattey

TPP #114 | Seeking the Proof of Jesus with Jesse Royer

TPP #114 | Seeking the Proof of Jesus with Jesse Royer

Has there ever been a song that impacted your life greatly?  Joining me today is Jesse Royer who shares about his journey after diagnosis and how he saw the proof of Jesus in his life. After chasing his dreams of being a dancer in Los Angeles, Jesse's life literally hit a brick wall and through many doctor's visits showed there was a brain tumor affecting his ability to dance. Jesse shares about the anxiety and desperation in the midst of his circumstances and his desire to find the proof of Jesus.  I think so many of us can relate to needing a sign from God to just know he is with us.

Jesus wasn't even on my radar yet. - Jesse Royer

Jesse also shares how God reached him through the lyrics of music and how God talked to him to give him the peace he needed in the midst of a storm. As you listen to Jesse's story, remember Your parable showcases how He is with you even in the unknown.

    Reflection Questions
    1. Maybe you are walking in a season of unknown right now. Spend some time in prayer so that you can be so attuned to his direction but also still in the unknown.  It could be for preparation, you need to adjust your heart. Seek his heart first as a sign of direction.

    2. Pay attention to the lyrics of worship songs this week, it is so easy just to read them but not fully feel and know who we are worshipping.
