Stop Giving Away Your Photography & Living a Life of "Contrast" Instead of "Balance"

In today's episode, these are the big topics we discuss:

    • How saying "no" to lowball offers helps the photography community
    • The difference between striving for "balance" in life vs "contrast" and when it makes sense to work towards each
    • Revisiting and defining your "why?" for photography

Lessons Learned from Vancouver Island Trip, Pivoting Through Unpredictable Events, & Stop Labelling Things as "Bad" & "Good"

Lessons Learned from Vancouver Island Trip, Pivoting Through Unpredictable Events, & Stop Labelling Things as "Bad" & "Good"

Today's episode is with your hosts! I (Seth) had just gotten back from a trip out west to Vancouver Island. This episode is built around not the trip and its itinerary, but around the lessons learned from shooting out there. The trip was not just for pleasure as I was tasked with two commercial gigs that helped pay for the trip. We also dealt with a forest fire that forced our trip to go a completely different direction halfway through. In this episode, some of the things we talk about are, but not limited to:

    • How to rationally make decisions and pivot when uncontrollable events happen
    • Avoiding trying to always categorize and label things as "bad and "good" and how this eliminates needless suffering. It also ties into gratitude
    • What's it like to be a beginner again in relation to recording video

Why You Should Ditch Society’s Expectations & Amphibious Photography with @formerlyhomelessphotographer

Why You Should Ditch Society’s Expectations & Amphibious Photography with @formerlyhomelessphotographer

Today's episode features a discussion with Matt Sullivan (@formerlyhomelessphotographer), an amphibious photographer with scroll stopping and truly unique images. In his early 20's, Matt made a bold decision to live out of his car in L.A in an effort to reduce his living expenses so that he could afford to travel and visit the places he wanted to with his camera instead of sinking his money on rent. In this episode some, but not all, of the topics we talk about are:

    • Not building your life based on the traditions of society
    • Why certain sacrifices make complete sense in the pursuit of passion
    • Amphibious and underwater photography, both fresh water and salt
    • The importance of expanding our own lens of the world, and using our values and images to do the same for others without being pushy

Imposter Syndrome vs. Performance Anxiety, How to Slow Down, & Visual Storytelling with @small_soy

Imposter Syndrome vs. Performance Anxiety, How to Slow Down, & Visual Storytelling with @small_soy

In today's episode we're joined by Rachel Bradley (@small_soy) and Australian photographer, or as we like to call her in this episode, a "visual author". Rachel seemingly can shoot any genre and create scenes that tell a descriptive story. Boudoir, products, engagements, landscapes, Rachel has a gift in her ability to notice moments worth capturing and publishes them in an one-of-a-kind artistic form.

In this episode we talk about the difference between imposter syndrome, which can be debilitating, and performance anxiety which can be enhancing. We talk about ways we can get ourselves to slow down on set or in the field so that we're honing in on what's important to photograph rather than clicking the shutter at everything and anything like a mad (wo)man.

Most of the theme of today's episode focuses on how we can best become visual storytellers with our images. Rather than offer easy low hanging fruit suggestions, we try really hard to discuss the nuances of what really goes into the details of getting that visual story across.

How to Film Time-Lapses, AI “Photography”, & Is Instagram Killing Your Creativity? with @sorin.dean

How to Film Time-Lapses, AI “Photography”, & Is Instagram Killing Your Creativity? with @sorin.dean

Today's episode features a discussion with Seattle urban and street photographer Sorin Dean (@sorin.dean). We chat about the future of AI and photography and whether its quick advancement poses a threat to our livelihood as photographers. We talk about how vertical photographs are becoming endemic and how we need to get back to shooting landscape orientation if it serves our photo or scene better. Sorin discusses how he goes about filming his catchy time-lapses. Lastly, we discuss how important it is to serve your own tastes rather than slaving away to Instagram's algorithm. We talk about how being a servant to the app can lead to the death of creativity.

Switching from Nikon to Sony, Spurring on Creativity, & Working Beyond Talent

Switching from Nikon to Sony, Spurring on Creativity, & Working Beyond Talent

Today's episode is a big one! Aaron switched over from Nikon to Sony so now there's one less thing to tease him about (sorry Nikon shooters, we still love you!) So far he has nothing but good things to say about his new camera body. He gets into why he made the switch and his first impressions. We also get how forcing yourself to post everyday or every weekday is a great way to force yourself to spur on creativity and work that muscle. If social media is a burden to you it's also a great challenge to push through something that isn't necessarily fun, but that will potentially harbour growth results. Lastly we get into the concept of what taking photography beyond your talent really looks like.

Getting Paid Fairly & Licensing Your Images with Adam Coppola

Getting Paid Fairly & Licensing Your Images with Adam Coppola

Today's episode features Adam Coppola (@coppolaphotography) a professional commercial photographer from Connecticut. Aaron has referenced Adam a lot in previous episodes, especially the fact that he is a full blown professional with little focus or attention paid to social media. We highlight this fact so that listeners can zoom out and realize that social media is a tool and not the photography industry as a whole.

In this episode Adam shares how to price yourself so that you get paid fairly for your work and so that you avoid getting taken advantage of. We also explore licensing photos as opposed to only charging for the amount of time it took you to do the work. We discuss what you charge can be a sliding scale based on what your images will be used for and how much advertising dollars will be put behind pushing them.
