    Episode 62: Sean Kelly- Former Duke Basketball National Champion to Marathon Running Dad!

    In this episode, Sam brings on Sean Kelly. Sean grew up as a gifted athlete. He enjoyed baseball and was a walk-on to the Duke University Basketball team. For three years, he served as a player manager, and in his fourth year, he earned a spot on the team, ultimately becoming part of the 2015 National Championship-winning team.

    After graduating, Sean wanted to continue working towards personal accomplishments. Because of that, he challenged himself back in 2022 to run the NYC marathon. Sean embarked on this new fitness journey, while being a father of two, and working a full time job. Sean shares his struggles in that race as he needed to enter the medical tent at mile 16 and how he bounced back in the 2023 NYC marathon.

    Sean shares a ton of value on training for beginner runners, especially about time management and motivation, as he lives an especially busy life.  He also shares how to stay healthy while running, and balancing other fitness activities such as basketball.  He even shares some fun Duke Basketball stories!

This winter, his asthma has been a significant struggle due to the challenges of moving to Colorado and being in the cold, dry elevation. These conditions have led to multiple asthma attacks, causing Sam consistent shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing episodes, posing a challenge for his training.

    Sam shares his complete history of asthma, discussing when it has affected him the most and how he has resolved such issues in the past. He also outlines his plan for addressing and overcoming these challenges moving forward. Additionally, Sam recounts his worst asthma attack, lasting for 16 hours, which resulted in inflamed lungs and necessitated a week-long prednisone prescription, along with the struggles associated with that experience.

    Sam hadn't anticipated participating in this race at the beginning of the year. However, with his girlfriend Colleen expressing interest, he decided to pace her for as long as possible. Given that this race occurred just four weeks after the St. George Marathon, and with no specific training for such an event, Run Breiter had little idea of what to expect.     In this episode of the Run Breiter Podcast, Sam brings on his girlfriend Colleen. Colleen has ambitious goals, including running the Leadville 100 one day. Over the past year, she has dedicated herself to building her endurance. From incline hiking to tackling 14er hikes across Colorado, she has been climbing mountains and making it look easy. Additionally, she recently started competing in races again, which included a 10k, half marathon, and pacing a runner for 26 miles during the 2023 Leadville 100, where she and Sam first met. She is now in training for the Austin Rattler 50k, which will take place in early November.

    Although all of this may sound intense, Colleen has been taking her endurance training seriously for about a year now. She serves as a prime example of how quickly you can learn about running when you take action and learn from others in the sport. If you're a beginner with big dreams, this episode will be perfect for you!
