    The Well Within Podcast

Some of the best advice we can receive is from the wisdom of other people's life experiences. Together, we'll unpack simple truths behind wise living related to faith, family, work, relationships, and everything else in between. Inspired by Proverbs 20:5, these conversations begin with the humble admission that all wisdom originates in God and is best understood in the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. My hope is that you will be inspired, challenged, and grown by the discussions on this podcast. Happy listening!

E12 Matt Hogan, Government, Politics, and the Kingdom

Government is maybe one of the most unavoidable institutions given to mankind. A good government can empower and sustain culture, while a tyrannical government aims to strangle individual freedom and expression. On today's show, Matt Hogan joins me to discuss several topics that center around the idea of what the Bible has to say about Government, Politics, and the Kingdom of God.

I am certain that you will be entertained, challenged, and hopefully persuaded to value some of the thoughts me and Matt flesh out, especially as we see a Midterm Election coming up quickly here in the United States. Christians have a pivotal role to play in our governing bodies and systems, because ultimately it is the Christian ethos that properly defines the principles of representative government.

Matt has spent over 16 years in full-time church ministry, including most recently serving as Associate Pastor of Worship at Heights Baptist Church in Alvin, TX. Go check out their church podcast here. Also, check out me and Matt's previous conversation about conscience, discernment, Christian Liberty, and Halloween here. I have had the pleasure of being Matt's friend and so I've come to depend on him to be both solid and biblical in his opinions, but mixed with a healthy dose of sarcasm and belly laughs!

E11 Bryan Chaffin, Easter: Made, Mocked, or Missed?

E11 Bryan Chaffin, Easter: Made, Mocked, or Missed?

Without a doubt, Easter is probably the most revealing religious celebration in the entire world! To celebrate faithfully as a Christian, we are asked to profess such truths as Jesus Christ having both a Divine and human nature,  blood washing away sins, Jesus resurrecting bodily from the grave, among MANY others. In all of the buildup to this very important day, we often find ourselves falling into one of three categories as to how we actually behave on that day, we either 1) MAKE the most of it, 2) relentlessly MOCK it, or 3) feel that we've MISSED out on properly celebrating!

In today's episode, I'll discuss the truth that God's grace is constant and still remains for YOU, no matter which category you feel describes your Easter plans!

Leave a comment or send me an email sharing where you felt yourself this Easter. I would love to start a conversation!

E10 Rodney McFarland, Encouragement & Hard Work

We all have people in our lives that just make us feel better! Not just that, they have a way of bringing unity and agreement to whatever situation they find themselves. Honestly, you might even be that type of person. In this episode, I sit down with Rodney McFarland to chat about what it's like to be someone that knows how to bring the best out of people.

Although today's topics are known to just about everyone, encouragement and hard work. can be tough to do well. Enjoy listening to Rodney as he walks through his inspiration, motivation, and reward for being a natural encourager! I for one was amazed at several of his insights as to what motivates him to be encouraging in the first place.

Here's a challenge for everyone...drop an encouraging word in the comments, leave a review, or even better, send me an email (info@thewellwithin.life) and let me know what you liked about this episode.

E9 Bryan Chaffin, Christmas & Adoption

E9 Bryan Chaffin, Christmas & Adoption

Christmas is a great time to reflect on more than just the central characters of the biblical story of Jesus's birth, it is a time to contemplate the parallels held in the act of adoption. In today's episode, I explore five ways that Christmas uncovers the nature of God through adoption.

    1. ADOPTION IS CORE TO HOW GOD RELATES TO HIS CREATION
    2. ADOPTION WAS NOT A “PLAN B”
    3. ADOPTION STEPS INTO BROKEN PLACES
    4. HUMAN FRAILTY AND SINFULNESS CREATES THE NEED FOR ADOPTION
    5. ADOPTION IS A PORTRAIT OF THE GOSPEL

The fact that the Word of God would become flesh should tells us a bit about how much God loves us! As you celebrate Christmas this year, don't forget to

    • praise God the Father for his deep and abiding love for you
    • thank Jesus that He stepped into human skin to become our Great High Priest
    • rely on the Holy Spirit to empower your new life

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Here are the scriptures used in today's lesson:

Proverbs 20:5 (TPT) - “A man of deep understanding will give good advice, drawing it out from the well within.”

Galatians 4:4-5 (CSB) - “When the time came to completion, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”

Galatians 4:4-5 (TPT) - “But when the time of fulfillment had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law. Yet all of this was so that he would redeem and set free those held hostage to the law so that we would receive our freedom and full legal adoption as his children.”

Psalm 68:5 (TPT) - “To the fatherless he is a father. To the widow he is a champion friend. The lonely he makes part of a family!”

Psalm 107:41 (TPT) - “But he raises up the poor and lowly with his favor, giving them a safe place to live where no one can touch them. God will grant them a large family and bless them.”

Genesis 3:15 (CSB) - “ I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Phillipians 2:5-11 (CSB) - “Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. 7 Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, 8 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death — even to death on a cross. 9 For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow — in heaven and on earth and under the earth — 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Hebrews 4:14-15 (CSB) - “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens — Jesus the Son of God — let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.”

2 Corinthians 5:21 (CSB) - “He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

E8 Laura Biley and Bret Newcomb, Loss, Grief, & Finding Hope

E8 Laura Biley and Bret Newcomb, Loss, Grief, & Finding Hope

Tragic loss and the realization of outliving someone we love are never things that we would expect or welcome, but they are realities of the world we live in. On today's episode, I am joined by Laura Biley and Bret Newcomb to discuss the untimely deaths of their spouses and how they have dealt with these events.

Probably one of the most universal experiences that all people will face at some point in their life will be loss, grief, and then trying to find hope on the other side of that loss. I knew that this would be a delicate conversation, but I am grateful to have these two as friends in my life to help speak wisdom into how we can properly grieve those we lose. Beyond that, I was most encouraged to hear them talk about what is even past the "Acceptance" of what has happened in their lives.

If this episode speaks to you or maybe you've even recently lost somebody that was dear to you, then please email me (info@thewellwithin.life), post a comment, or better yet reach out to those around you that could use some encouragement this Christmas Season!

If you are in the Houston-area and are dealing with grief, then contact Bo's Place, a bereavement center that offers grief support. Both guests on today's episode have either personally benefited from their services or know people that volunteer.

E7 Dianna Boyett, Fitness & Physical Health

    E6 Bryan Chaffin, Changing Seasons

    E6 Bryan Chaffin, Changing Seasons

As it turns out, life is unpredictable! Ups and downs, highs and lows, joys and hardships. How we make sense of these "Changing Seasons" will determine a big part of how we see our life's purpose. No matter what kind of season you are in right now, follow me in this conversation to think about four aspects of how we approach what Ecclesiastes 3 calls the "times" of life:

    1. EVERYONE GOES THROUGH SEASONS
    2. SEASONS ARE NOT FOREVER
    3. ALL SEASONS SERVE A PURPOSE
    4. GOD IS ULTIMATELY SCRIPTING EACH SEASON

When it's all said and done, having a correct understanding about why God is allowing certain things to happen to and around you is very important! If you take anything from this episode, let it be that God is trustworthy to script your entire life because is is altogether sovereign AND good!

Here are the scriptures used in today's lesson:

Proverbs 20:5 (TPT) - “A man of deep understanding will give good advice, drawing it out from the well within.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (CSB) - “There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven”

James 4:14 (TPT) - “But you don’t have a clue what tomorrow may bring. For your fleeting life is but a warm breath of air that is visible in the cold air only for a moment and then vanishes.”

Jeremiah 29:11 (CSB) - “For I know the plans I have for you — this is the LORD’S declaration — “plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Acts 17:26 (CBS) - “From one man he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.”

Romans 8:28 (CSB) - We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”

E5 Bryan Chaffin, Measure Your Words

E5 Bryan Chaffin, Measure Your Words

We've all been in a situation where we've either said or heard someone else say something that makes a room stop and stare! Turns out, there's a perfect remedy for that exact issue: bite your tongue! Sounds simple but it might just be the last frontier of what people will actually ever be able to conquer. In the Book of James, the Bible makes it clear that the tongue is of immense power and can be used to both bless AND curse.

In this episode, I will explore this concept of speech and why it is important to not just be aware of WHAT we say but also HOW MUCH we speak. In the end, to "Measure Your Words" is always the wisest way to approach any conversation. This is especially true in a culture that sets the entire world (well, pretty much) up as its audience!

So, the next time you want to make that joke, slip in that verbal jab, or make that comment, put a delay on it and see if you end up looking better in the end (Proverbs 17:28).

E3 Jared Scheppmann, Leadership & Vision

E3 Jared Scheppmann, Leadership & Vision

Leadership is an indispensable feature of successful businesses, organizations, and even families! My guest today, Jared Scheppmann, gives his thoughts on both the practical AND intangible skills that effective leaders should bring to the people they are leading. He certainly has the skills and education to step into most any role he would choose, but his passion has become serving children with disabilities in Uganda. Currently, he is the Executive Director of Ekisa Ministries and is hopeful for "The Next Chapter" in their story!

Jared and his family became a lifeline for me and my family, while we were living in Uganda fostering two children and fulfilling the role of In-Country Directors at Amani Baby Cottage. I am personally grateful for the part he and his wife played during the tragedy of my wife's motorcycle accident only days before she was to return to America.

Listen in, as we discuss everything from leadership, vision and even recount (for the first time together) how his God-given leadership traits impacted the medical care and well-being of my wife until I could arrive in Uganda. Listen all the way through because Jared drops wisdom like it's nothing!

    E2 Corky Randolph, Legacy

Join in today for a conversation with Corky Randolph, as he shares his thoughts on what a good legacy looks like and why it is important. We were able to sit down outside together on the grounds of the Mustang Ranch in Alba, TX right next to beautiful Lake Fork. That said, you will probably hear the occasional dog barking or cicada chirping.

We all want our lives to mean something, after we're gone. Legacy should be one of the most pressing topics that we are constantly thinking on how to improve. Corky shares his life experiences in faith, family, and business and how they led him to feel confident in the legacy he will one day leave behind.

Our discussion covers a lot of ground so be sure to listen to the end! If you want to know more about Amani Baby Cottage, then click the link and find out more about its history and how you might be able to serve the needs of orphaned children in Uganda.
