We discuss a little bit about sheltering in place and a reminder to keep it real! Not everyone and every family is dealing with stresses the same way, and many of us are dealing with loss of income and jobs; essential jobs that take us in harms way; dealing with trying to work at home while homeschooling; sick family members or self; lack of focus or direction; and overall grief and fear of an unknown future.

The Yarniacs Episode 215: Knitting While Sheltering in Place!

Gayle and I are sheltering in place right now, spending lots of time on Ravelry chatting in the forums, stalking, and giving those little hearts. We're both working from home when possible, and exploring online resources for cooking, books, museums, and movies. I hope everyone is finding ways to reach out to others, stay healthy, and support those essential workers who are allowing many to shelter at home. Stay safe everyone and go wash your hands! Happy knitting!

There are lots of different cast-ons that knitters can use. Like Gayle and I, perhaps you have a few that are your "go to" cast-ons. But there are a few situations where you might benefit from learning and using a different or new-to-you method of casting on. In this segment, we discuss some of the options out there, and why you might choose to use a different cast-on from your usual method.

The Yarniacs Episode 213: Stitches West 2020!

The Yarniacs Episode 213: Stitches West 2020!

Gayle and I have just returned from spending the weekend at the Stitches West event in Santa Clara. Stitches West is a large retail needle arts event with a large market place and classes. We also worked at the Western Sky Knits booth, helping with set-up, sales, and tear-down. One of the best things about any large fiber event is the people watching. Or in this case, the sweater watching. Trends we noticed included combining two or more strands of yarn together to create fabric; colorwork sweaters are still popular; new textures, such as the slubby yarn we saw at Western Sky Knits; and we noticed that many dyers are bringing back non-superwash bases. There is so much to see at a show like this and even though we try to at least walk the whole show floor, we still miss things! But we had a fabulous time and enjoyed spending time with friends and listeners. We hope you enjoy our brief recap!

What do you look for when picking a pattern? Sizing, yarn used, and design are all important. But what other factors can help you successfully pick a pattern that you will love to make and love to wear? In this segment we share a little bit of our process and what helps us to determine if a pattern is something we want to make.

    Perfectionism!
What is "perfect" when it comes to our knitting and crafting projects varies from maker to maker. For example, some sock knitters must knit perfectly matching socks! Others don't mind if the striping varies or if the toes are knit in different colors. Does your need for perfection hold you back from trying new things? Does it ever keep you from finishing projects? Gayle shares the story of her Ashes shawl.

The Yarniacs Episode 198: Knitting Soothes the Troubled Spirit Part 2!
