    Things We Got Wrong

Everyone makes mistakes. We're human. But the biggest mistake to make is not learning from things you got wrong. After over 600 episodes of The Brain Candy Podcast, Sarah Rice and Susie Meister realized their freewheeling, casual conversations didn't always get everything exactly right. And as they evolved and grew over the years and science developed, they changed their minds about a lot of things. So it's Things We Got Wrong to the rescue! This podcast is a celebration of humility, evolution, and growth, and says it's ok to make mistakes and change your mind. It's time to move forward by looking back!

Conspiracy Theories, Beyonce's Baby, & Lizard People

Conspiracy Theories, Beyonce's Baby, & Lizard People

We're revisiting our first Brain Candy episode on conspiracy theories, and it was a doozy. We brought Sarah's brother on the show to talk about some of his favorite conspiracies, and he had quite a few. We explain why conspiracy theories often include anti-semitic elements and the people who subscribe to them don't even realize they're promoting that ideology. Sarah was vindicated about her belief in aliens since our original Brain Candy episode as the government released previously unknown info about its data on the subject. We check back on Sarah's "favorite" conspiracy theory to see if she still thinks Beyoncé did not carry her first child. We hear why Sarah thinks she knows the biological mother of Fergie's baby. And Susie wants to know why lizard people would ever want to visit Denver. We discuss the strange explanation peope have for the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. And we learn which conspiracies Susie and Sarah still believe in.

Body Image, Balenciaga, & Boob Jobs

Body Image, Balenciaga, & Boob Jobs

This is probably our most personal episode yet. We continue to realize how we've grown since we started the show, but not in a regretful way, but in a way that makes us thankful for all the lessons we've learned. We talk about how we shouldn't be tricked into thinking a company supports our values if they make a choice we like because their only interest is the bottom line. We revisit a conversation we had about body image and discuss whether we've become more comfortable in our own skin in the last seven years. We hear why Sarah has chosen to wear less makeup and how she performs beauty with a different intention now. Susie reveals why she only recently started to grasp her own insecurities. We discuss plastic surgery and the balance of authenticity while living in a world that values youth and beauty.

Online Dating and Susie's (Sometimes) Judgment

Online Dating and Susie's (Sometimes) Judgment

Today we cover episode 11 of Brain Candy, which was about online dating. We realize how different Sarah was when she was married to her ex and how wrong we were about his "bromance" with Susie's husband Adam. We cover the science behind online dating, and why the apps offer an imperfect solution to a complex problem. Despite their flaws, Sarah keeps having good luck finding partners on apps, and apparently a lot of other people are too. Susie confesses to her judgment of niche communities and how she knows it's wrong, but can't help it sometimes.

    Apologies, Divorce, & Musical Interludes

    Apologies, Divorce, & Musical Interludes

Sarah is NOT tone deaf, ok? Despite what her brother said and what she believed for 30 years, she actually can hold a tune. But bad news is her ukulele might have caused her divorce. Hear why some people think music is awful and some people think it's heavenly. Susie asks whether she should apologize for her behavior on The Challenge and whether a particularly terrible Facebook post should be acknowledged or not. We hear what the press got wrong about anorexia after Karen Carpenter's death. And we discuss the way celebrities must see the whole world as the enemy.

Cannibal Condiments and Egyptian Good Vibes

Cannibal Condiments and Egyptian Good Vibes

Happy (late) Halloween! We should've started with how Susie was wrong about fun size candy bars, but we didn't. Just know, she was wrong, and she admits it. Sarah was wrong about Jeffrey Dahmer--both his personality and his eating habits. But she was right about the pyramids holding an electromagnetic secret. We discuss social media, e-books, and tech addiction, and why we shouldn't have guilt about using our phones. And we say what the Challenge producers got wrong about violence.

Astrology, Spiritual Women, & Transgender Journey

Astrology, Spiritual Women, & Transgender Journey

Today we're exploring Brain Candy Episode 7 where we discuss crime and punishment. In the BCP episode, Susie finds out that Sarah is into astrology, and Susie is pretty judge-y about it. Today we find out if she thinks she was wrong about it or not. Her conclusion comes after Sarah insists on reading her "rising sign," "moon" something or other, and some other words that don't mean anything. We also consider why women tend to be drawn to astrology and spirituality in general. Plus, Susie provides more insight about cannibalism (based on our Jeffrey Dahmer discussion) and why she was wrong about Ted Bundy. Plus, we discuss what Sarah got wrong on a Challenge and why we want to talk to Kaitlyn from Real World Brooklyn about her transgender transition and affirming surgery.

    Food Fails & Fatphobia

    Food Fails & Fatphobia

This was the episode we were dreading. We knew we had an episode of Brain Candy that was so bad we had to delete it entirely, but we didn't realize how bad it was until we unearthed this "lost" episode and listened to it again seven years later. Oy. It's bad. We were offensive, small-minded, ignorant, and fatphobic. And we had no idea we were even saying anything shocking. Today we discuss all of the things we got wrong about food, bodies, and fat. We share some of the reasons these prejudices and biases were part of our worldview, the impact of reality tv on our own body image, and the question of whether we should've been cancelled. It's a lot.

    Objectiphilia, Victorian Hypocrites, & AC/DC

    Objectiphilia, Victorian Hypocrites, & AC/DC

Today we have describe why Brain Candy's fourth episode is still missing, making it officially our "lost" episode, and we try to recall what we said in it that was specifically so offensive. It was probably Susie's fault, let's face facts. We revisit our discussion of objectiphilia and discover a study that shows the type of people who are more likely to have this sexual attraction and our minds are blown. And it helped Susie not get so mad at their harmless sexual preference. Sarah is pissed about a couple who live their lives as "Victorian" (except for their incredibly not Victorian era BLOG). We hear a clip of Sarah making fun of Susie for not knowing what AC and DC stand for, but she reassures us she is a changed woman.

    The Great Debate--Feminism Revisited

    The Great Debate--Feminism Revisited

Episode 5 of Brain Candy featured a debate with a woman named Cassie who does not share our feminist worldview. On today's show, we revisit the episode and talk about whether we should've even had her on the show in the first place. We discuss what we got wrong in approaching the debate and consider whether we were even effective or convincing in sharing our points of view. Susie discusses whether amplifying hate speech, extremism, or bigotry is beneficial or just makes the problem worse. We discuss how the concept of the Real World is the secret to open-mindedness and it's critical to expose yourself to other worldviews.

Married Sarah, Foot Fetish Brain, & Illegal Suicide

Married Sarah, Foot Fetish Brain, & Illegal Suicide

Hooray! Brain Candy's spinoff is finally here! In our very first episode of Things We Got Wrong we explain why we're doing this show, what our intentions are, and what people can expect. We begin with a discussion about how cringey it is to listen back to our first episodes (from seven years ago!) and how we've changed since the beginning. Sarah explains how her marriage informed her demeanor and why that was something she got wrong. We revisit a conversation about foot fetishes and try to decide whether we got anything wrong. Sarah claimed suicide was illegal in some states and Susie reveals whether this is true or not. Be sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode!
