    Peter Stark and Brian Lauzon of AV Print

    Peter Stark and Brian Lauzon of AV Print

    We were joined on this episode by Peter Stark, the Head of Print at AV Squad, and Brian Lauzon, the Creative Director there at AV Print.

    Peter shares about how one goes from serving in the Peace Corps to running print at one of the most successful shops in the business. Brian gives us a glimpse at how a guy could get from Buttzville, NJ (jk, he's actually from Long Valley, NJ - Buttzville was just a place he visited for the hot dogs) to working on some of the most kick-ass posters we've enjoyed over the last 20 years.

    We also talked about plenty of their work. There was a pretty scary SAW poster, CRASH posters they each worked on, a really rad PATRIOTS DAY poster, a motion and emotion-filled TAR piece and so much more. I mean, check out their site. There's HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, CIVIL WAR, THE HOLDOVERS... Anyway, check it out. So much great work!

    Dwight Caines, President of Domestic Marketing for Universal Pictures

    Dwight Caines, President of Domestic Marketing for Universal Pictures

    In this much anticipated conversation, we had the joy of sitting down with Dwight Caines, President of Domestic Marketing for Universal Pictures. With a career that evolved from being an aspiring scriptwriter to high-profile marketing roles, Dwight generously shares about his personal and professional experiences and what he learned along the way that helped shape his success in the industry. We discuss his early interest in film; freelancing on production gigs around NYC on TV and film (which led to his epiphany that freelance is not his cup of tea!); how he got his first job in the business; and he details the digital innovation he championed in marketing and the campaigns that left a significant impact on him.

    Dwight goes beyond discussing his professional achievements and delves into subjects that matter deeply to him. He highlights the importance of diversity and inclusion in Hollywood, underlining the evolution of inclusivity in film marketing. He also talks about his role in the Universal Pictures Inclusion Council and the 'Make It Universal' initiative aimed at showcasing diverse talent in the company. Dwight also underlines the significance of mentorship, the benefits of his teaching roles, and how he tries to inspire the next generation of filmmakers; as well as his involvement with Stand Up To Cancer and why the organization is so meaningful to him. Before we wrap, it was cool to hear Dwight shed light on the future of the film industry in the face of an increasingly digital world.

    This is a special Twenty Thousand Hertz presentation of THE BOOJ STRIKES BACK!

    This episode was written and produced by Abigail Barr.

    In the 80s and 90s, movie trailers were ruled by “voice-of-God” narrators who used stock phrases like, “In a world…” Today, movie studios have a different trick up their sleeves: epic sound design. In this episode, Professor James Deaville explains the history of trailers, and Youtuber Craven Moorhaus crafts a hilarious takedown of the overused clichés of modern blockbuster trailers. We’ve remixed one of our most popular episodes for your listening pleasure.

    HELEN AHN: Making an impact on the trailer industry... even when it's hard!

    HELEN AHN: Making an impact on the trailer industry... even when it's hard!

    Who better to have our first one-on-one after the long hiatus? HELEN AHN, of course! Coming off of her well-deserved Clio Entertainment Impact Award, Helen came back on the show to discuss

    • Mentorship (and whether there's a better word for that);
    • How our best work is still in us - "I don't know if I could have done that until this very day;"
    • Her passion to leave a lasting legacy, specifically in the realm of social justice;
    • The wonderful organizations Helen is a part of such as Good City Mentors;
    • The terror of an empty timeline and how to just get started;
    • EDITORIAL PASTICHE... including some of Helen's favorite work (see below for some links);

    And yeah, we got into an argument. A pretty public one at that. But how do we disagree in a healthier way? As Helen says, there's got to be room for grace.

    Panel Discussion - How are we doing? No, really. How ARE you?

    Panel Discussion - How are we doing? No, really. How ARE you?

    For today's panel discussion, we were joined by three leaders from Ignition Creative, Jaclyn Thomas, SVP AV and Creative Director; Dhruv Kumar, Assoc. Creative Dir. and Sr. Editor; and Eric Breshears, Creative Dir. of Print; (with a cameo from Wayne Watson, Pres. and Exec. CD) to have a candid conversation about how we're all doing. We've all been through a lot as an industry, collectively and individually. So, how are you?

    We also discussed how Jaclyn, Dhruv and Eric each got into the industry. Then we dove right into how we're all doing as well as how we've helped others through the ups and downs of the last few years. We definitely got pretty real about mental health. After a random story about Corey's Aunt Rhoda from Brooklyn, we dove into some of our favorite trailers and posters (see links below). And of course, we got some great career wisdom from these remarkable leaders.

Miguel and Clark were both doing fan trailers and mashups as passion projects before they ever got into the trailer industry. Their stuff online got a ton of attention, justifiably so, because they’re really good. In both their cases, they were able to turn their passion into their profession and represent the next generation of great creative contributors to the industry.
