    Plot Summary of A Feud is a Feud:
    Andy is caught in the middle of two feuding mountain families when one’s son and the other’s daughter show up at the Taylor house to be married. Andy brings the feud to an end by bluffing the heads of the families into settling the matter once and for all with a duel.

    This episode is a real treat for us all in that we get to hear from Opie’s buddy Howie Pruitt himself. Dennis Rush spends almost an hour visiting with us and telling stories of growing up as a child actor in Hollywood. We focus on The Andy Griffith Show, of course, but Dennis’ career is an amazing story and I know you’re going to enjoy.

    He tell about working with so many of the stars that most of us dream of ever just having a chance to see in person. Dennis worked with them and has stories about each. We could easily have spend another hour going through what he was able to accomplish before he was even 17 years old.

    Sit back and get ready for a long episode. Take your time, pause and come back if need be, becasue you will not want to miss a minute.

    Plot Summary of Runaway Kid:
    Andy finds himself in a dilemma after teaching Opie a lesson about the importance of always keeping your word. Opie has made a sacred trust not to divulge that his new friend, George “Tex” Foley, is a runaway. Andy must grapple with violating Opie’s trust or returning the boy to his family and explaining that there is always an exception to every rule.

    I’ve had several folks send me things related to previous episodes and I feel like it’s time to catch up with them. Mayberry folks are some of the best people you’ll ever meet and we have several “trained noticers” in the audience that we’ll hear from.

    We get some answers related to some “Who Said It” questions Jan and I asked in the last episode. Several folks sent in answers and I’m very thankful to hear from all of you but I’ll have to pick a few representatives.

    Larry wrote in to point out something unusual about the original air date of the episode “A Date For Gomer” and that many, if not all, of the books on Mayberry get it wrong.

    Paul Mulik sent in some great “Who Said It” questions with a bonus question that will make you scratch your head. And finally, I’ll remind everyone of upcoming Mayberry events you may want to plan on attending.

    This episode we dive into the second episode of The Andy Griffith Show, “The Guitar Player.” The original Air Date: 1960/10/17. The writers are Jack Elinson and Charles Stewart. It was directed by Don Weis. We meet the character Jim Lindsey for the first of two times. Jim, of course, is played by the wonderful James Best. Mr. Best appeared often at Mayberry related events over the years before his passing on April 6, 2015.

    We play some Mayberry Song Trivia we began last episode and see how we can do. Hopefully you’ll have fun.

It was directed by Don Weis. We see Otis for the fist time and we here the phrase from Barney that, I believe, Mayberry fans may quote more than any other, “It’s Big!…..Ah, big ain’t the word for it.”

    I make a correct from last weeks episode to clear up something that was once believed to be true but is now known to be a misconception. (During this episode I erroneously reported that a publicity photo of a young Frances Bavier is seen on the wall of the Taylor living room as Andy walks from the kitchen to the front door. It will be seen in several first season episodes. As pointed out by Randy Turner in his fantastic collection of essays, Mayberry Firsts, the picture is in fact a print of the painting Child With An Apple by the French artist of the 18th century Jean-Baptiste Greuze.)

    We play some Mayberry Trivia to see how we can do, just for fun.

    I’m going to try and do something different for a while. I’ve started to do this before but always faded off on it and didn’t follow through. We’re going to try and talk about one episode of The Andy Griffith Show most every week followed by some trivia and then talk about some cast birthdays.

    That’s the plan but, we’ll see how well the plan survives the year. ha ha

    This episode we start with the first episode of The Andy Griffith Show which is called The New Housekeeper. It first aired on October 3, 1960 and started everything that we still celebrate to this day.

    NOTE: During this episode I erroneously reported that a publicity photo of a young Frances Bavier is seen on the wall of the Taylor living room as Andy walks from the kitchen to the front door. It will be seen in several first season episodes.     For Christmas, some folks get new electronic toys (phones, tablets, etc) that can be used for listening to podcasts or watching videos. Over the years Two Chairs No Waiting has had episodes to reflect on the past year and look to see which episodes have been downloaded or viewed most during the previous year.

    This list is a good way for new folks to see which of the 767 previous episodes of the podcast that might be worth their time to go back and give them a listen/watch.

    It is still Christmas time here in Mayberry and it’s certainly a busy time for us here at TCNW HQ. As such, we’re going to have a “replay” episode this week where we revisit an episode called “A Condition of the Heart” originally published on March 8, 2022. I hope you enjoy it and it helps bring us that wonderful Christmas spirit throughout the week.

    I thought it was a good one because we hear from Elinor Donahue’s son, Peter, toward the end of the episode talking about his mom and we heard from her last week.

    I was moving things around in the Two Chairs No Waiting Archives and ran across a copy of “The Mayberry Confidential” from September 28,1995. You might be asking, “What is ‘The Mayberry Confidential?’ and I would say it is the “Official News of Mayberry Days” and is published each year as a guide to the events held during Mayberry Days in Andy’s hometown of Mt. Airy, NC.

    This issue has a wonderful story written by guest columnist Jim Clark called “A Condition of the Heart.” I believe the feelings expressed by Jim fit well with comments made in previous episodes about Mayberry being a “state of mind.” Jim’s thoughts may be an even betty way to express what Mayberry means to us and I know you’ll enjoy hearing them.

    It’s Christmas time in Mayberry and time for our annual Christmas episode. The Andy Griffith Show had only one episode centered around Christmas. Fans have watched that episode time and again as Ben Weaver tries to get himself arrested so he can spend Christmas in jail with the Taylor’s, the Muggins’, and Miss Ellie. It’s touched our heart every time.

    Each year, Two Chairs tries to bring back that warm feeling as we go through Mayberry memories of Christmas time. We also make a new memory or two in the process. We have a special guest back again this year from over in Dodge City. His name is Festus Haggen and he has a really good story to tell about Santa. There’s a story called “The Fife Before Christmas” by my friend Rik Roberts who played “Barney” in the Mayberry Man movie.

    We have a favorite of mine by Charlie Monk called “Andy and Opie Christmas” that brings back memories of a small town Christmas that sure reminds me of Mayberry.

    To close out the episode, we hear from Elinor Donahue about recording “Away in a Manger” with Andy then we hearing her sing.

    This episode we’ll listen to, and I recommend watch, a skit performed during Col. Tim’s Talent Time at the 2023 edition of Mayberry Days. Mayberry Days is held in Mt. Airy, NC (Andy’s hometown) the last full weekend of September each year and Col. Tim’s is the wrap-up of the main portion of Mayberry Days.

    Col. Tim’s is something you almost need to experience to understand but I would say it’s kind of a “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” type of performance with random things happening throughout. It always sells out so I believe it’s good enough to keep folks coming back year after year and it’s always a different show.

    This episode we experience “Count Istvan Teleky” with Tim Pettigrew as Goober, Terry Varvel as Barney and Allan Newsome (me) as Floyd. The trio re-create the scene of the three in the backroom of the Mayberry courthouse conjuring “the Count” and making wishes.

    We have a few voice mails from listeners and then we’ll wrap things up with a few trivia questions from the 2023 Mayberry Cruise.

    I found, or somebody sent it to me, a 1990 article from the Jackson Sun newspaper (Jackson, Tenn.) that covered Frances Bavier. It went into a bit of what she was like in real life versus what we all think of her as from TV. She wasn’t “Aunt Bee” and the story goes in to ways she differed from the character in her daily life.

    We’ll go over the article and then I’ll add a few tidbits about Ms. Bavier that may help you realize that while she wasn’t “Aunt Bee” in real life, she did have at least some of “Aunt Bee’s” character living within.

    Well wrap things up with a few trivia questions from the 2023 Mayberry Cruise.

    I’m so thankful for the folks that created and and made Mayberry a real place in our hearts. The things they thought of made the town and the people who live there seem like people who could have lived in the small town I grew up with. They seemed so real, like they could have been sitting next to me in the church pew or at a ballgame at the local high school.

    The world won’t be as good a place if Mayberry had never come to be. We would have messed so many laughs and smiles and things would be just a bit more sad. Thank goodness we never have to know what the it would be like not to have these wonderful characters to enjoy.

    We share a bit of sad news about the passing of author Richard Kelly but in even that, there is joy because I brought more of the Mayberry spirit to us all and we’re thankful for him.

    Finally, we’ll do a few trivia questions to have just a bit more fun.

    It’s the Halloween time and it is a tradition here on Two Chairs No Waiting to tell a spooky story or two around the campfire.

    This year we have a special guest storyteller. James Dodson has been coming to Mayberry events for a few years now as “Andy” and I thought it would be fitting to have him tell a story that I know you’ll all enjoy.

    In the search for a story to tell you that is in the same spooky vein as “The Golden Arm,” I found “Chief Swanee’s Gold” written by Craig Dominey and Lanny Gilbert on “The Moonlit Road” podcast/website. Craig granted me permission to share that story with you and it will be followed by a version of The Golden Arm folktale.

    The Golden Arm was most famously told by Mark Twain and also used by him to instruct others in how to tell a story. In 2015, I first presented the Mark Twain version of the story in episode #349. This being the spooky time of the year, I thought it was time to tell another version of the story.

    This episode is spooky so be sure to keep those who might not sleep well, like Barney and Gomer, away from this episode I wouldn’t want to have anyone staring darkness trying to spot someone looking for their gold or their golden arm.
