Our guest today is the Turkish writer Burhan Sönmez. @brhsonmez

BURHAN SÖNMEZ is a Kurdish author writing in Turkish. He used to work as a human rights lawyer in Istanbul before going into exile in Great Britain following serious injuries inflicted by the Turkish police. His books have received prestigious literary prizes. He now lives between Istanbul and Cambridge.

Burhan Sönmez's latest book "Labyrinth: a novel" has been published by Gallimard. @editions_gallimard

Burhan Sönmez answers our ritual question: “What does it mean to have rights?” and then talks about his exile and his expectations for his return. He discusses how he began to write novels without having premeditated it (7'45). He explains his distinction between memory and history and meditates on the conditions of African-Americans in the United States (9'30). Burhan offers his point of view on what oppression from one generation to the next in Turkey has brought about (10'45). He takes us onto the field of identity and freedom and reveals the opportunity for the hero of his latest book to free himself through amnesia (15'). Does Burhan Sönmez feel safe in Turkey? He develops on the subject, saying the worst of all is "social amnesia". This leads us to forget that migration flows are the result of the actions of political leaders, that these flows have not always followed the same direction and, above all, that when we talk about migration flows, we mean human beings (17'). Burhan Sönmez talks about the press in Turkey during the Erdogan era and the term "pinguin media" which the Turkish people used to describe the information channels controlled by the government. Burhan Sönmez shares an anecdote about what he took with him when he left Turkey thinking that his end was near (22'45). He gives a definition of art, then reacts to Martial Mingam's work Trame visible on the site www.utopia3ch. To close this meeting, Burhan Sönmez evokes the blues and what this music means to him.

Burhan Sönmez est un auteur kurde écrivant en turc ayant travaillé comme avocat spécialisé dans la défense des Droits de l’homme à Istanbul avant de s'exiler en Grande-Bretagne suite à de graves blessures infligées par la police turque. Ses écrits ont été distingué de prestigieux prix littéraires. Il vit aujourd’hui entre Istanbul et Cambridge.

Burhan Sönmez répond à notre question rituelle: «que signifie avoir le droit?», puis évoque son exil et ses attentes liées au retour. Il évoque comment il s’est mis à écrire des romans sans l’avoir prémédité (7’45). Il nous livre sa distinction entre la mémoire et l’Histoire et médite sur la condition des Africains-américains aux États-Unis (9’30). Burhan propose son point de vue sur ce qu’a engendré l’oppression d’une génération à l’autre en Turquie (10’45). Il nous entraine sur le terrain de l’identité, de la liberté et dévoile l’opportunité pour le héros de son dernier livre de se libérer par l’amnésie (15’). Sönmez a-t-il le sentiment d’être en sécurité en Turquie? Il s’exprime sur le sujet, et considère que le pire demeure «l’amnésie sociale». Celle qui mène à oublier que les flux migratoires sont le fruit des actes des dirigeants politiques, que ces flux n’ont pas toujours suivi la même direction et surtout que derrière ce terme attendent des êtres humains (17’). Burhan Sönmez parle de la presse en Turquie sous l’ère Erdogan et du qualificatif «media pingouin » dont le peuple Turc a affublé les canaux d’information à la solde du pouvoir. Il ponctue à nouveau l’entretien de l’optimisme et du talent que possède l’être humain à imaginer le meilleur. Burhan partage une anecdote sur ce qu’il a emmené avec lui lorsqu’il a quitté la Turquie pensant alors que sa fin était proche (22’45). Il livre une définition de l’art, puis réagit à l’œuvre Trame de Martial Mingam visible sur le site www.utopia3ch. Pour clore cette rencontre, Burhan Sönmez évoque le blues et ce que représente pour lui cette musique.

First episode : Joe Sacco, comic-book author. Recorded in English.

The legendary cartoonist and reporter Joe Sacco has been criss-crossing the planet for 30 years through his prodigious immersive graphic investigations, interweaving past and present, with a focus on the stigmas of war and its tragic consequences. In this dialogue with international history professor Davide Rodogno and cultural journalist David Brun-Lambert, Joe Sacco talks about being rooted and uprooted, the genesis of a good story, the aftermath of colonialism and the recent protests around the globe. 
His new book, Paying the Land, has just been released recently. 

Summary:

Joe Sacco talks about Malta, his homeland, and his geographical trajectory from Australia to the United States (4'56). He tells us how he perceives his profession (7'), about the impermanence of memory (12') and his way of transcribing inconsistent testimonies. He evokes the subjectivity inherent in journalism (16'). About colonialism (20'), he recounts the implacable power of the system and the reasons why his father was in favour of the British Empire. He then addresses the themes of oppression and resistance in his work (23') and details what he considers to be the fundamental stages of engaged art: criticism and self-criticism. He gives us his analysis of street revolts in Lebanon, Haiti, Hong Kong and France. What would he take in his bag as a refugee? (29’). He recounts the influence that music has had in his life (32') and reveals the people he would like to interview (34'). In conclusion (37'), he reacts to our ritual question about Trame, a work by Martial Mingam representing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which has been shredded and then braided. Le 1er épisode de utopia3 est disponible ! Joe Sacco, auteur de BD et reporter à la bibliographie magistrale (Palestine, une nation occupée, Gaza 1956, Payer la terre…)  illumine ce premier entretien enregistré en anglais. 

Dans ce dialogue au long cours, Joe Sacco parle de Malte d’où il est originaire, et revient sur sa trajectoire géographique de l’Australie aux Etats-Unis (4’56). Il nous raconte la façon dont il perçoit son métier (7’), nous parle de l'impermanence de la mémoire (12’) et de sa manière de transcrire des témoignages non concordants. Second episode: Perla Joe Maalouli, activist & artist. Recorded in English.

Perla Joe Maalouli is one of the voices and one of the faces of the 2019 Lebanese Revolution. Sitting down in the ring, at the centre of the protest, with the protesters, facing the police and the security forces, she read poems in front of the Public Electricity building. She drove 300 Lebanese women to intercede with the militaries and avoided a possible blood bath. Perla Joe Maalouli is 27 years old, she is a filmmaker, a musician, a poet, a bigmouth, a rebel-born person. Let’s meet her thanks to this dialogue with international history professor Davide Rodogno and cultural journalist David Brun-Lambert.

Second épisode: Perla Joe Maalouli, activiste & artiste. Enregistré en anglais.

A 27 ans, à la fois cinéaste, musicienne, sportive de haut niveau, poète et activiste, Perla Joe Maalouli est l’une des voix fondamentales de la Révolution libanaise de 2019.

Au cœur des manifestations, faisant face à la police et aux forces de sécurité, elle a notamment lu ses poèmes incandescents devant le bâtiment de l'Électricité publique du Liban, puis a encouragé 300 femmes à intercéder auprès des militaires afin d'éviter un probable bain de sang.

Perla Joe Maalouli répond à notre première question rituelle «que signifie avoir le droit?», puis nous parle de son expérience de gardienne de but (5'), de l'adrénaline qu'elle a éprouvée dans ce rôle et de sa détermination à défendre ses buts. Elle rapporte les incohérences de son pays et explique la corruption de son système (9'). Elle parle de féminisme (15') et de ce qu’elle est en mesure faire pour que triomphe la Révolution. Perla Joe Maalouli nous explique ses espoirs placés en la diaspora libanaise (19'), ses modes d'expression en tant qu'artiste (24') et plus largement sa vision de la vie et Pson engagement politique. Notre première saison du podcast utopia3 consacré à celles et ceux qui pensent, font et luttent pour les droits humains se poursuit avec notre troisième invité: Yves Daccord.

Nous avons reçu Yves Daccord à la veille de la fin de son mandat de directeur général du Comité international de la Croix-Rouge (CICR), poste qu’il occupait depuis 2010. Ancien journaliste à la Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS), il a rejoint, en 1992 l’organisation humanitaire pour laquelle il a mené des opérations notamment en Israël, au Soudan, au Yémen, en Tchétchénie et en Géorgie.

Yves Daccord renverse notre rituelle question «que signifie avoir le droit?» (2’20), puis nous dresse le bilan de la dernière décennie dans l’humanitaire. Il nous livre sa définition de sa mission au CICR et en quoi le changement de notre rapport au temps et à la distance impacte in fine la confiance et le travail des humanitaires (7’35). Il évoque ce que seront les principales difficultés pour les humanitaires dans les années à venir avec des situations d’urgence qui durent et des États en situation de fragilité et ne pouvant plus envisager le long terme (14’30). Il dresse le portrait des personnes travaillant autrefois au CICR (15’30) et les changements de recrutement qui ont été opéré suite notamment à la professionnalisation de l’humanitaire (17’). Il revient sur l’histoire du CICR au temps de la première guerre mondiale et de la guerre froide (20’) et présente les enjeux actuels (21’). Au-delà de l’action, Yves Daccord évoque les grands enjeux auxquels le CICR réfléchit et dot il cherche à anticiper les effets (22’30) : l’intelligence artificielles, les armes autonomes, la protection des données. Puis l’on s’attache à l’homme qui s’apprête à quitter ses fonctions au CICR au moment de l’enregistrement de cet entretien, à ce qu’il espère avoir insufflé à l’organisation et ce qu’il en a retiré (29’20). Nous l’interrogeons sur ce qu’il glisserait dans son sac s’il était réfugié sur le point de traverser la Méditerranée (30’45) et sur des images qui pourraient le hanter depuis ces quinze dernières années (32’). Yves Daccord revient sur ses années de journalisme et où il est toujours question de confiance (33’), sur ses aspirations en tant que citoyen libre et sur ce qui nous attend... Il nous livre alors ce qui pourrait être sa devise et ce qu’il aime dans l’humanitaire (38’).
