    Wisdom from A Bulldog

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by Nobel laureate, twice British prime minister and knighted author and statesman, Winston Churchill.

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.”

    — Sir Winston Churchill

I get quite a few quotes sent to me during the year, but the best one sent to me in recent years has to be from reader Kevin S., who suggested we use this beautiful and eminently true assessment of socialism by the great Winston Churchill. The English statesman saw socialism’s evils first hand, and thanks to his resolve and his ability to rally his countrymen, he helped thwart socialism’s tyranny before it could take over Europe. For that, free people around the globe owe a debt to the “British Bulldog.”

    Of Christmas and Conscience

    Of Christmas and Conscience

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by a true American Renaissance Man, scientist, writer, statesman, and philosopher, Benjamin Franklin.

Of Christmas and Conscience Wednesday Wisdom Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods Quote“A good conscience is a continual Christmas.”

    –Benjamin Franklin

This time of year is replete with reflection on the past 12 months. It’s also a time when we prepare ourselves for the coming year. But before you get to either of these things, remember what Benjamin Franklin said about a good conscience. You see, when our hearts and minds are clear, we can see the past for what it is and the future for what it should be — and that, my friends, will bring you holiday cheer throughout the year. From all of us here on the Way of the Renaissance Man team, we wish you the very happiest of holidays. Jim Woods December 21, 2022

    JFK on Gratitude

    JFK on Gratitude
Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by an American politician who served as the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy.

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

    — John F. Kennedy

As the late president so poignantly put it, gratitude is much more about action than mere words. This Thanksgiving, don’t just merely speak about the things you’re grateful for. This year, act on that feeling of gratitude and do something special for the people you value most — including yourself.

    Paine-ful Wisdom

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods. ‘Paine’-ful Wisdom Wednesday Wisdom Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods QuoteToday's insight was inspired by English-born American political activist, philosopher, political theorist and revolutionary, Thomas Paine.

“Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.”

    –Thomas Paine

I think the great Thomas Paine said it all with this famous quote, so I’ll refrain from any further elaboration other than to say that if you haven’t read any of this incredible thinker’s work, then you need to do so immediately. I guarantee you’ll find his thought-provoking wisdom both challenging and inspiring. Jim Woods November 9, 2022

Today's insight was inspired by an American statesman, diplomat, Founding Father and the fourth president of the United States, James Madison Jr..

“If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.”
    –James Madison

I think it’s important, especially today, to remember Madison’s warning. Whatever battles we fight around the globe, we cannot let those battles destroy our freedom.

On Harnessing Passion Wednesday Wisdom Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods Quote

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by American novelist, poet, and one of the pioneers of the Beat Generation, Jack Kerouac.

“My fault, my failure, is not in the passions I have, but in my lack of control of them.”

    –Jack Kerouac

Passion is what makes life worth living. But controlling your passions is just as important as cultivating them. When it comes to a healthy life, balancing your enthusiasm and your self-discipline are the dual keys to success.

    On Ignorance and Confidence
Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer, Mark Twain.

“All you need is ignorance and confidence and the success is sure.”

    –Mark Twain

The iconic writer provides us with a humorous, yet quite profound piece of advice in the above quip. You see, sometimes not knowing what you supposedly are unable to do is just enough of an edge to get that thing done. Believe in yourself, don’t listen to naysayers, and don’t accept limitations. Do that, and success is sure.

On Knowing Yourself, and Your Enemy

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods On Knowing Yourself, and Your Enemy Wednesday Wisdom Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods Sun Tsu QuoteToday's insight was inspired by the Ancient Chinese military treatise, The Art of War by Sun Tsu.

“Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.”

    — Sun Tzu

The iconic military strategist’s seminal work, “The Art of War,” is replete with lessons about life. Here, Sun Tzu reminds us that the key to victory is not only knowing your enemy, but also knowing yourself. Until you master yourself, you can never really be confident in any of life’s battles. Up next on way of the Renaissance Man, Will AI destroy Humankind Featuring Robert Deadman —and other lighthearted subjects.

Way of the Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Will AI destroy humankind—and other lighthearted subjects. That’s the serious, yet playfully intriguing discussion I had with my friend, computer scientist, investor and fellow Renaissance Man, Robert Deadman (and yes, that is his real last name). Robert is one of those rare individuals who possesses a breadth of knowledge that he can eloquently translate into casual conversation, even about such advanced and interesting topics as the rise of Artificial Intelligence, or AI, and the potential benefits and dangers of this technology. In this wide-ranging conversation, Robert and I discuss the current state of AI, and what the future holds for this ubiquitous technology. Topics here include such questions as… At what point will AI begin making its own decisions? How far away is this circumstance? What is the role of quantum computing in this question? Will AI actually have “free will”? When will the move from “Artificial Intelligence” become “Artificial Sentience”? Can we solve the so-called “Alignment” problem of AI, and how can we really understand this concept? I absolutely loved this conversation with the fascinating Robert Deadman, and at the risk of alienating my other guests, I must say that this was my favorite podcast yet—and I hope you think so as well. And now, my interview with Robert Deadman.

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by American professional rodeo cowboy, Hall of Fame world champion bull rider, and co-founder of the PBR,  Professional Bull Riders organization, Tuff Hedeman.

Wisdom of a Bull Rider Tuff Hedeman Quote Way of the Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

“Bear down, try hard and never quit. NEVER!”

–Tuff Hedeman, World Champion Bull Rider

There’s perhaps no sport that requires more grit, determination and mental and physical toughness than bull riding. Nobody knows that better than four-time world champion Tuff Hedeman. One of Tuff’s keys to success was, well, his toughness. No matter how hard things got or how much pain he felt, Tuff got on that bull and never quit. And though the lives of most people don’t require strapping themselves to a 1600 lb.-mass of bucking muscle, we all have our own personal bulls to ride. So when things get tough, remember what Tuff says. Never quit. NEVER!

Investor Kevin O'Leary Enters the Renaissance Man's Shark Tank

Up next on way of the Renaissance Man, investor Kevin O’Leary enters the Renaissance Man shark tank….

Kevin O’Leary, also known by his nickname, “Mr. Wonderful,” is one of the stars of the CNBC show “Shark Tank,” a favorite TV program of this entrepreneurial Renaissance Man. In this episode, I turn the tables on Mr. Wonderful as he enters the Renaissance Man shark tank to talk about his new company, cryptocurrency trading platform WonderFi. The interview took place on the cusp of an interesting time for cryptocurrency, as the big June 2022 swoon in the price of Bitcoin has rattled investors, along with many companies in the industry. According to O’Leary, what Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies really need to flourish is, ironically, some industry regulation, and as he puts it, “that’s when the real money is going to come into it.” Along with WonderFi CEO Ben Samaroo, O’Leary explains that despite the hype of cryptocurrencies, the big money players such as pension funds and sovereign wealth funds have yet to embrace the asset class. Once this happens, which will take a regulated, compliant and transparent platform such as that provided by WonderFi, the big gains in cryptocurrencies will really begin. I very much enjoyed my discussion with Mr. Wonderful and his partner Ben Samaroo, and it couldn’t come at a more interesting time for the cryptocurrency industry. And now, my interview with Kevin O’Leary and Ben Samaroo…

Today's insight was inspired by American Singer/songwriter, founder and former front man for Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius Rucker.

On How to Learn to Live Darius Rucker Quote Way of the Renaissance Man Starring Jim WoodsYou gotta live and learn You gotta crash and burn You gotta make some stances And take some chances You gotta laugh and love And take all life has to give You gotta live and learn So you can learn to live –Darius Rucker, “Learn to Live”

Country music artist Darius Rucker’s song “Learn to Live” is a great example of finding deep wisdom in an unlikely place. This upbeat tune’s lyrics emphasize the virtues of living by principle, taking risks and learning from mistakes. Now I ask you, what better lessons can one learn? Jim Woods March 9, 2022

Today's insight was inspired by American short story writer, outdoorsman, and novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize (1953) and the Nobel Prize in Literature (1954) for his novel The Old Man and the Sea, Earnest Hemingway.

    –Ernest Hemingway

As a human, you’re going to experience sorrow, sadness and heartbreak. But it’s how you emerge from these that determine your existence. Often, coming out stronger in the broken places is the difference between being happy, and living a life of pain.

Up next on Way of the Renaissance Man, Educating America Conceptually Featuring Ed Thompson

One of the best things about having the Way of the Renaissance Man podcast is I get to have great conversations with the some of the smartest people in the world.

You often hear that education is the key to success. And while I agree with that statement in principle, it’s important to understand that it is the kind of education one gets that really matters.

In the new episode of the Way of the Renaissance Man podcast, I speak with Ed Thompson, a man whose mission is to help reeducate America, conceptually.

Ed is the founder of the Conceptual Education Project, a group spearheading an effort to reform the education system by guiding it away from the current “progressive” philosophy first created by John Dewey, and into a more “conceptual” philosophy.

The basis of the organization’s program is to help train intellectuals who can articulate and advocate a rational approach to primary and secondary education, with a view to radically influencing how teachers colleges teach.

If you are concerned with the current state of the anti-conceptual approach to education that pervades America’s K-12 system, and you want to find out how you can help make things more philosophical, and more conceptual, then this episode is a great place to start.

    Evelyn Waugh on Limitations

    Evelyn Waugh on Limitations
Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

This insight was inspired by a quote from English writer, book reviewer, biographer, and travel author, Evelyn Waugh.

"When we argue for our limitations, we get to keep them."

     –Evelyn Waugh

The great British author had a distinct way with words, and that way is on full display here in the above quote. And while I subscribe to the thesis that a man’s got to know his limitations, I also think most people are trapped in a cocoon of self-imposed limitations. Don’t accept these limits. Doing so will severely curtail your ability to prevail in life.

And on the latest episode, I do just that, as I welcome my friend, fellow U.S. Army veteran, West Point graduate and the premier expert in the field of precious metals investing, Rich Checkan. Rich is the President and COO of Asset Strategies International (ASI), which is the only dealer of physical gold, silver, and other precious metals that I recommend. In this episode, we discuss the importance of being a critical thinker, and the importance of talking about ideas and exposing oneself to all opinions. It is through the process of filtering out the good from the bad ideas, and knowing when you can, and cannot, compromise, that you become a better decision maker. Other topics in this wide-ranging discussion include the January 6th insurrection, the importance of rational arguments, the virtue of rational persuasion, the role of passion in the world and the critical need to do something meaningful in life. Plus, no discussion with Rich Checkan would be complete without his expert view on gold and precious metals. I always enjoy my conversations with my “battle buddy” Rich Checkan, and I know you will too.

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by American motivational writer, William Arthur Ward.

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”

    — William Arthur Ward

Expressing thanks for all our blessings at this time of year is common. Yet when it comes to expressing thanks and gratitude for all we have, I think any time of year is the right time. So, give yourself and those around you that wrapped present. It will make everyone feel better, especially you.

    A Rainy Longfellow

    A Rainy Longfellow
Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by American poet and educator whose works include "Paul Revere's Ride", Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

“Into each life some rain must fall.”

    –Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

We learn from our mistakes, and we learn the value of preparation from disaster. If you get caught in a storm, remember that it’s up to you to prepare yourself for the consequences before you get stuck in the mud. If you don’t, then you have no one to blame but yourself.

10 Punk Rock Rules for Success

10 Punk Rock Rules for Success

Welcome to today's Audio Essay from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

As a Renaissance Man, Jim Woods recognizes and admires greatness in all areas of life. As a musical talent and frontman for his own band in the 90s, Jim acknowledges and gives his "hat-tip" to today's legendary audio essay feature. And now, here's Jim Woods.

“I just wish to shine brighter, and if it burns my body to a crisp, I’m happy to go right now.”
    -Henry Rollins

That bit of high-intensity wisdom comes from a man who I admire deeply; singer, songwriter, spoken-word artist, author, actor, radio and TV show host, publisher and true renaissance man, Henry Rollins.

Henry made his mark on pop culture as the frontman for the quintessential punk rock band Black Flag, and then later via the Rollins Band, and he turned that experience into a multi-faceted and eminently interesting career fit for a true polymath. His career continues today, mostly through writing and one-man spoken word shows that combine the intensity of a punk rock concert with the intellectual stimulation of a Ted Talk.

If you are a long-time reader of The Deep Woods, part of my financial publications, you probably know that I am a huge music fan and a huge fan of renaissance men (and women) who are able to do many different things in life and to do those things very well. In fact, this entire website and podcast appropriately called Way of the Renaissance Man, is dedicated to extracting wisdom and knowledge from these types of individuals so that we can apply that wisdom and knowledge to our own lives.

A couple of years ago, another polymath I admire, entrepreneur, investor and business inspirer Evan Carmichael compiled a list that he called “Henry Rollins’s Top 10 Rules for Success.” You can watch the video on YouTube. I recommend doing so, as it will give you a sense of the intensity and focus Henry puts into just about every breath he takes.

Here is a list of those top 10 rules (complete with sage advice straight from Henry himself), rules that I also try to live by, and rules that can help everyone — regardless of what stage they are in life — achieve just that little bit extra that makes life glorious.
