Born and raised in a family lineage of brujos (witchdoctors, healers, sorcerers), Papa Hector started training as a brujo in 1989 and initiated in his family lineages of 21 Divisions and Sanse. He was raised by his grandmother, Dona Juana Acevedo, bruja and espiritista. In 2003, Papa Hector was initiated into Haitian Voodoo as a houngan asogwe, a high priest of the Asson lineage. He lived and apprenticed for years in Haiti under a number of houngans and mambos.

My approach to all I do is both informed and driven by my magical practice and spirit contacts. I believe that magic, sorcery, shamanry, witchcraft and related practices are the root of human spiritual culture. As Western societies grow more fundamentalist (particularly in the USA), in their expressions of both religion and materialism, there has been strong pressure to move away from the magical approaches which are, I believe, the birthright of humans. If we humans are indeed in some way special, I would like to think that this is not all in our material progress as expressed in rampant industrialism (and it’s co-mingled social, psychic, and planetary degradation), but in our ability to directly interface with the vast array of beings and experiences that make up the world we inhabit, both this material Earth we dwell upon as well as the Otherworlds of the spirits. My aim as author, sorcerer, and artist is to facilitate this communication between ourselves and these others.

Via open a doorway into her worldview as a woman, a witch, a person of mixed ethnicity, and how this all comes together in her journey through life. It's a beautiful vision of diversity and inclusivity. I can't recommend that you read this book enough.

I sincerely hope you enjoy this episode. Via is one of my favorite guests I've ever been honored to spend time with as a host. I say something in the show and I absolutely mean it. When Via speaks, people run out to find a way to become Witches.

This episode is the launch of a new special series called Road Spirits! This series will be all about magical people having magical adventures and what they discover along the way. Why? We all travel. We all go on vacations. Well, we try and hope. Maybe this will inspire you. Traveling as magical people takes on extra depth. We look for the mysteries, the spiritual places, and the history. We find ourselves in strange encounters too. This series is my way of making these conversations more important.

If we humans are indeed in some way special, I would like to think that this is not all in our material progress as expressed in rampant industrialism (and it’s co-mingled social, psychic, and planetary degradation), but in our ability to directly interface with the vast array of beings and experiences that make up the world we inhabit, both this material Earth we dwell upon as well as the Otherworlds of the spirits. My aim as author, sorcerer, and artist is to facilitate this communication between ourselves and these others.

It's no secret I count Jason among one of my own greatest teachers. It's always good to pick his brain some more. This time we focused on moving to a new home magically. In other words, dealing with the spirits and places you're leaving behind as well as meeting the new ones and how to find them. Jason Miller (Inominandum) has devoted 30 years to studying practical magic in its many forms. He is the author of the now classic Protection and Reversal Magick as well as several other books. He teaches a number of courses online including the Strategic Sorcery Training Course, The Black School of St Cyprian, and The Sorcery of Hekate.

He’s belonged to a few groups, traveled to a few magical hotspots, and been initiated into this and that, none of which is very important. What is important is that he can do magic that actually works. More to the point, his students tell him he can teach them magic that works. We cover how Patrick got started podcasting and paranormal investigating while we also dig into his own personal spiritual beliefs and background. There's more. The energy of this episode was fantastic. I told Patrick he's stuck with a friend for life.  He's genuinely one of the best people you'll ever get a chance to know. 

Patrick's Bio:

Patrick Keller is an educator, speaker, and the host of the Big Séance Podcast, which is a forum for “paranerds” to have an open dialogue about all things paranormal. He has been a featured podcaster on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and is a member of The Podcast Academy. Some of Patrick’s notable guests have included Chip Coffey, Loyd Auerbach, Amy Bruni, Adam Berry, Rosemary Ellen Guiley, Troy Taylor, Guy Lyon Playfair, Karen A. Dahlman, and one of the world’s most investigated and celebrated mystifiers, Uri Geller.

He founded the Missouri Spirit Seekers, a paranormal research team, and he has spent a lot of time experimenting with spirit communication tools and techniques, such as EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena). One of Patrick’s passions is cemetery photography, and spending hours at a time capturing the natural beauty of the cycle of life and death in a place typically stricken with grief.

His education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Missouri – St. Louis.
