S5-9 - Out & About In Saigon - with What About Vietnam host Kerry Newsome

Hello, I'm Kerry Newsome, and welcome to my podcast, "What About Vietnam." In this episode, I'm thrilled to introduce you to a mini-series "Out & About in Vietnam" that will take you along on my holiday adventures in Vietnam. Over the next 60 days, I'll be sharing my experiences, destinations, and the fascinating people I meet along the way.

Today, we're starting with "Out & About in Saigon", my first stop on this journey. Vietnam is a country that benefits from research and preparation, and through this podcast and series, I aim to help you navigate the overwhelming amount of information out there. I also wrote an Ebook and self published it on Amazon to help guide your plans. Cheap as chips, you can buy HERE, and read it in a day.

As a precursor, as you will hear in the show, please double-check your visa details meticulously. See my Link HERE  which explains the process for E-Visa to ensure you get it right FIRST GO!

In Ho Chi Minh City, I recommend taking the first day to orient yourself. Use Apps  ( See You Tube I did talking about Apps here ) like Grab for transportation, Exe for currency conversion, and Google Maps for navigation. Decide whether you want to hit the top attractions, explore the outskirts for a taste of history and nature, or simply wander the streets and get lost in the local scene.

Stay tuned for more episodes in the "Out and About" series, where I'll take you to my next destination, Hoi An. You can find all episodes on your usual podcast channels and on whataboutvietnam.com.

Thank you for joining me on this adventure, and I look forward to sharing more of Vietnam with you.

What About Vietnam – S1 – 8 Tips for Vietnam travellers during TET

What About Vietnam – S1 – 8 Tips for Vietnam travellers during TET

Today's episode is particularly special as we delve into the vibrant celebration of Tet, the Vietnamese New Year and what that means for Vietnamese and you as a traveller during this time period.

Drawing from my personal experiences in Vietnam, I've compiled 8 essential tips for travelers to help you navigate and appreciate Tet's rich traditions while planning your trip effectively.
Tet is a time of giving, gratitude, and family, marking the advent of spring and a fresh start. It's important to note that Tet dates vary each year according to the lunar calendar, with upcoming years being February 10th for 2024 (Year of the Dragon), February 29th for 2025 (Year of the Snake), and February 17th for 2026 (Year of the Horse).

In this show I highlight my most important tips for travellers to ensure they enjoy their stay during this time and manage their expectations.

Here are the TOP 8 tips I discuss on the show:-

    1. Buy Travel Tickets Early
    2. Arrive Early for Departures
    3. Carry All Travel Documentation
    4. Manage Expectations
    5. Check Hotel Services
    6. Use Facebook for Communication
    7. Be Cautious with Restaurant Choices
    8. Ensure You Have Enough Cash

Find out my own personal advice on how best to manage your travel arrangements. If you do plan your trip to be in Vietnam why not embrace the local customs, try traditional foods like chung cake or Tet cake, and learn a few festive greetings to show your respect and appreciation for Vietnamese culture.

For those planning a trip in 2024 or beyond, consider these insights to decide whether traveling during Tet aligns with your preferences. Personally, I prefer traveling before or after Tet to allow the Vietnamese to celebrate this significant time without the intrusion of tourism.

For more details and assistance with trip planning, check the show notes or reach out to me directly. Wishing you a fantastic travel experience in Vietnam!Remember, Tet is not just a holiday; it's a profound cultural experience that offers a glimpse into the heart of Vietnam. Whether you choose to travel during this time or not, understanding and respecting the local traditions will undoubtedly enrich your journey.

What About Vietnam – S5-E7 - The Rise of Unique Dining Experiences in Vietnam

What About Vietnam – S5-E7 - The Rise of Unique Dining Experiences in Vietnam

In our show today we get to explore the evolving food culture in Vietnam, with a focus on the growth of new culinary experiences and the expansion of dining options beyond just street food. Don’t get me wrong, Street Food is still something you must try, but don’t stop there!
Stick around to find some of the up and coming places to eat in Vietnam.

My wonderful guest, Jovel Chan a food writer and consultant, shares her insights on the influx of chefs from Vietnam and abroad, the rise of upscale establishments, and the overall refinement and enhancement of the dining scene in cities like Saigon and Hanoi.

Listen to the end as as you will want to know about Jovel's favourites in those 2 cities.

Many talented chefs have come to Vietnam, particularly in cities like Saigon and Hanoi, to set up their own restaurants and cater to both tourists and locals looking for something different. These chefs bring with them their expertise and creativity, introducing new flavors, techniques, and cuisines to the Vietnamese food scene.

Additionally, the rise of five-star hotels and the opening of more malls in Vietnam have further diversified the dining scene. This has led to a wider variety of cuisines being available, catering to different tastes and preferences.

It was pure joy to have this time with Jovel as we laughed and agreed on so many topics and shared experiences. I hope you can forgive the slight ‘cross talk’ in places, but I think if I didn’t leave that in, you would miss out on the connection we had, and wanted to share with you.
Listen to the end as Jovel shares her favourites in Hanoi and Saigon.

You can find all about Jovel’s Saigon Social, dining guides and so much more on her website here

    Follow Jovel here:

We wish you a happy festive Christmas season and a Happy safe New Year.
This is the last show for 2023, but I am back in February 2024 with a new style of show that I hope you will love.
Stay tuned and check out over 90 shows on this podcast channel.

What About Vietnam - S5-E6 –Explore the ‘Land of Lychees’ – Bac Giang with a return traveller to Vietnam

What About Vietnam - S5-E6 –Explore the ‘Land of Lychees’ – Bac Giang with a return traveller to Vietnam

Bac Giang, is a picturesque place that often remains under the radar until the Lychee Festival, typically featured in social pages and news around June. This lively event commemorates Bac Giang's distinction as the "Land of Lychees."

In today’s episode Bac Giang and the subject of lychees are front and centre, as I get to share the story of a photographer named Jessie Pearlman, a previous guest on the podcast, who embarked on a return trip to Vietnam, driven by his love for the country and his desire to reconnect with friends and explore new experiences.

This show delves into the motivations behind his journey; the significance of the lychees to the region and the community, and how best to navigate a visit there. Jesse has a wonderful gift for self-expression and description which will immediately transport you to the experiences he had during his time in the heart of Bac Giang province, Luc Ngan, the township designated as the biggest growing township for lychees.

He provides valuable tips on organizing your trip and strongly recommends it as a destination to visit, just a short 2.5-hour drive from Hanoi, especially for photographers and tropical fruit enthusiasts.

This is an off the beaten track location and experience, so information is as Jesse describes, hard to find. Therefore, we have the following links to the people who helped him create his trip, which we hope will help you too.

    Lan's Tour Company: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100076182891385

By visiting lesser-known regions like Bac Giang, we can contribute to the local economy and make a positive impact on the community. Let's make a conscious effort to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations and give back to the places we visit.

What About Vietnam - S5-5 - The famous Hai Van Pass experience: Insights from a seasoned traveller

What About Vietnam - S5-5 - The famous Hai Van Pass experience: Insights from a seasoned traveller

If you're planning a holiday in Vietnam and have a penchant for motorbike rides and scenic routes, your quest will inevitably lead you to the iconic Hải Vân Pass (Đèo Hải Vân).

The Hải Vân Pass is more than just a road; it's a legendary motorbike route nestled in the heart of central Vietnam. In 2008, it garnered global recognition as the BBC and the Top Gear crew ventured through its winding trails, cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination for motorbike enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

But what sets the Hải Vân Pass apart is not just its breathtaking landscapes. It holds a pivotal place in history as a crucial route during the Vietnam War, bridging the north and south of the country. Today, it stands as a symbol of Vietnam's resilience and progress.

To uncover the hidden gems of the Hải Vân Pass, I had the privilege of speaking with Chris Moonie,  a seasoned media professional, and traveller, with over eight years of living in Vietnam and multiple explorations of the Hải Vân Pass, Chris's first-hand experiences and deep understanding of the region make him an invaluable source of information for anyone contemplating a journey along this iconic route.

Together we unpack all the ways to explore this route, and all the hidden gems along the way. Travelling by bike is not the only way to do this route.

Chris's own odyssey in Vietnam began in 2013, when he ventured to Hoi An with his son. He was instantly captivated by the country, its people, and the irresistible charm of Hoi An. A chance encounter with a special lady during his visit further cemented his decision to relocate to Hoi An. Since then, he has been a resident of An Bang, a once-sleepy village that has transformed into a bustling tourist destination only 10 mins out of Hoi An.

The Hải Vân Pass, no doubt, is a paradise for Instagram enthusiasts, but what sets it apart is the array of unique stops along the way. From oyster farms to the Dream Springs, this motorbike excursion offers more than just scenic beauty. But we will let you decide after listening.

What About Vietnam – S5_E3 – Heritage and discovery in Saigon, The Mekong Delta and Dalat

What About Vietnam – S5_E3 – Heritage and discovery in Saigon, The Mekong Delta and Dalat

In this podcast episode, I have the opportunity to introduce you to Vicki Thai, a Health Care Sales professional living in Utah, USA, with Vietnamese heritage.

Vicki's family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam when she was four years old, and during her growing up, she had never given much thought to her Vietnamese background. However, a moment of vulnerability in her mother's health led her to realize the importance of experiencing her heritage. She decided to plan a trip to Vietnam with her mother and reached out to the "What About Vietnam" podcast for assistance.

As I knew the background to the tour, I took great pleasure in planning this trip for Vicki and her mum, which included visits to Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat. These locations held special significance for Vicki and her mother, allowing them to explore their roots and connect with their heritage. Unexpectedly, the trip evoked strong emotions and a newfound appreciation for their Vietnamese identity.

During their stay in Vietnam, Vicki and her mother engaged with the local people, immersed themselves in the country's culture, and marveled at the landscapes. This experience transformed Vicki's perception of her birthplace, instilling a deep sense of pride in her heritage. She also praises the warmth and thoughtfulness of the Vietnamese people, particularly their tour guides, and one in particular in Saigon, Ms Thuy.

The episode highlights Vicki's journey through Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat, showcasing her awe and discovery of these places. I think for those who don’t live in their country of birth, you will relate to Vicki's story.

Despite the trip going mostly smoothly, there was a minor glitch, illustrating that while many aspects can be controlled, some factors remain unpredictable.

From the bustling vibrant city of Saigon, Vicki takes us by the hand as she describes her love of the bustling city of Saigon, to her awe and disbelief cruising through the Mekong Delta and then to discovering through the forests, the city of Dalat. A city she totally didn’t expect, while being her mothers’ birth city.

At a deeper level this episode offers insight into the transformative power of heritage exploration and the deep connections it can foster.

     Time stamps:

What About Vietnam – S5- E2 – Choosing Hoi An as a Digital Nomad Destination

What About Vietnam – S5- E2 – Choosing Hoi An as a Digital Nomad Destination

I’m thrilled to have such an engaging conversation with our guest today about the digital nomad lifestyle. Whether you're a seasoned nomad or just curious about this exciting way of life, this episode is a must-listen!

I am fortunate to be joined with Florian Rucker who inspires nomads by providing a unique, friendly, and well fit out co working space in Hoi An called The Hub, to perform this kind of work. If you can imagine having high speed internet, in a glass workspace, in the middle of rice paddy fields, you have it right there!

We get down to “tin tacks” as we talk through the evolving landscape of digital nomading and the transformation since Covid. No longer is it just for the youthful adventure seekers, employers are now funding some people to work this way, as they now recognise working remotely doesn’t have to impact output given the right set up.

Hoi An and the The Hub provide workers a unique experience in Vietnam and now that the E-Visa stays are being extended to 90 days this looks like being a very viable option for more people.

Flo is uniquely qualified to speak to this topic having lived abroad since he was 16. Originally a Berliner, he has a Cambridge education, and has lived in 7 other countries throughout his life. With a background in Development Aid and a IT Agency owner he fell in love with Hoi An after being a customer of the The Hub back in 2017. He bought the space in early 2021 and rebuilt it nearby, in the middle of the rice fields in ‘22/’23.

What About Vietnam - S4-25 - Drone photography in Vietnam: A fun Guide for travellers (Pt 3 Photography)

What About Vietnam - S4-25 - Drone photography in Vietnam: A fun Guide for travellers (Pt 3 Photography)

Are you a drone enthusiast planning to visit Vietnam? Or do you have a general interest in drone photography. Either way you won't want to miss this episode where my guest  Anton, a local drone enthusiast, shares his tips and experiences on drone use in the country.  Along with some humorous tales of motor bike riding.

Anton, known as 'Alright Anton'  from his YouTube channel  is able to share with us his insights and tips on how to simplify the process of using drones for non-commercial purposes.  He shares very real circumstances that can impact your drone flying success in some locations; and you will laugh hysterically at the stories he shares containing birds, wind and avoiding mountains.
The big tip: - Stick to avoiding 'no fly' zones and you won't have any problems.

Anton, originally from Ukraine, has been traveling throughout Asia for the past five years, starting in Malaysia, where he taught English for three years. He developed an interest in blogging and photography during his travels and has since started a YouTube channel where he shares his experiences and drone footage. Anton believes that Vietnam has it all, from beaches to mountains, making it an ideal destination for drone photography.

For the real amateurs like myself I share some of my own experiences with my DJI Mavic Pro 3,  and how travelling with this camera can cause some challenges. However, with some forethought, and proper planning, these can easily be overcome.

It's a fun show as in addition to Anton's droning experiences he shares his genuine love of places like Ninh Binh, Ha Giang, Sapa and while some of his travel stories are scary, his tales are very amusing.

This is Part 3 of the mini series of Photography, which I hope you will keep for reference and share with other interested travellers.

Meet once again our extraordinary photographer, and guest Thomas Levine whose talents and experiences have taken him on an incredible journey around the world!

To his credit, Thomas’s travels have resulted in an extensive archive of photographs from many countries and more recently Vietnam, showcasing the rich tapestry of the continent. His images can literally transport viewers to awe-inspiring landscapes, bustling city streets, and intimate cultural moments, inviting you to experience the world through his lens. I think that's what we all want ....don't we!

In this show Thomas expands on his photography tips:- How do we take photographs of some of the local people in Vietnam streets and regional locations?

When taking pictures of people, Levine advises to look for expressions that show emotion, such as a person enjoying their food. He also suggests taking pictures of people in the background, so they don't know they are being photographed. When taking pictures in different locations, it is important to be aware of the local customs and rules. In some places, it is not acceptable to take pictures, while in others, it is encouraged. By understanding the local customs and rules, as well as looking for body language and expressions, photographers can create stunning images that tell a story.

With the help of experienced photographers like Thomas Levine, we can all learn how to take stunning photographs that capture the true essence of a place like Vietnam.

Learn how to bring the best memories home with you by capturing alluring pics of Vietnam like a real professional with either your smart phone or digital camera.

What About Vietnam - S4-E22 - A wide lens view of trekking in Sapa

What About Vietnam - S4-E22 - A wide lens view of trekking in Sapa

In this episode of "What About Vietnam," I talk with adventurer and cinematographer Jack Taylor about the region of Sapa in north western Vietnam.
Sapa is a scenic area known for its mountainous terrain and rice terraced fields. Jack shares his experience trekking and filming for his Youtube channel through the Hoang Lien Son Mountains and his interactions with the local hill tribes. As a result of this trip, Jack is able to provide useful information for travellers looking to explore the region and includes a link to Jack's YouTube channel for more visual content.

Exploring the mountains of Sapa is an adventure like no other. Sapa is an overnight train ride or bus ride from Hanoi. It is the perfect place for those looking to get a glimpse of the mountainous regions, scenic rice terraced fields, and hill tribes of Vietnam. It's the place that opens you up to the ethnic minority tribes of Vietnam and of traditions still operating as they have done for hundreds of years. His commentary around their guide on the trip, called May , will endear you to the Dao people which  many say are one of the many warm and welcoming ethnic groups in the region.

Jack Taylor has traveled around the world, living in Spain, China, and Thailand before arriving in Vietnam and deciding to use his cinematic skills to create a more focused view of Vietnam.  His aim has been to focus on the people, places, food, and culture of the places he visited, and his videos of Sapa capture the beauty of the region perfectly.
You will know what I mean if you check his YouTube channel here which features  his story of trekking for 3 days with the Dao tribe  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4kPFsRVuAM

Overall, Sapa is an amazing place to explore the culture and wildlife of Vietnam. With the right preparation, research and respect for the local hill tribes, you will enjoy your stay and be talking about it for years to come.

What About Vietnam – S4- E21 – Exploring Phong Nha beyond the caves

What About Vietnam – S4- E21 – Exploring Phong Nha beyond the caves

If you thought Phong Nha, was just all about visiting the amazing caves you see and hear about, you would really be selling the area short. In this episode of "What about Vietnam?"  we get to give you some background as to how the area managed to get through the Covid years. And we open up the agenda to talk about domestic tourism and diversification. Then of course we get to showcase many other cool fun things to do in the locality.
My guest, is a bit of a legend in this area of Vietnam, and is none other than Ben Mitchell. Besides being an all round nice "Aussie bloke", he is extremely knowledgeable in local history and riding the Phong Nha loop as it is called.

Ben has been on the program before and along with Howard Limbert in other episodes we have covered the caving aspect of Phong Nha in great detail, which undoubtably is its main attraction. However what you are about to find out in this show, is the caves, ....are just the entry point to other things to do in the region.

Furthermore, the episode encourages visitors to consider extending  their stay in Phong Nha since a few days might not be enough to experience all the activities available. Everything from bike riding, walking tours, cycling through villages, farm to table feasts, and surfing, to finally enjoying a G&T watching a beautiful sunset over the paddy fields.

Ben has done a lot for tourism in the region, and is considered very knowledgeable on its history  and many aspects of bike touring along the HCM trail.  I feel sure from listening today you may like to consider bringing the whole family, as like Ben's young family, there is something for everyone. And everyone loves it!

What About Vietnam – S4- E20 – Hoi An – A life changing experience for a singer songwriter

What About Vietnam – S4- E20 – Hoi An – A life changing experience for a singer songwriter

In today’s show we explore Vietnam and the high hopes of a young traveller, singer and songwriter, who through his love of adventure and music found himself falling in love with Vietnam and its people.

Our guest Luke Webster talks about his travels and how he found himself enjoying a more relaxed pace, with happy smiling people and welcoming feelings of family and home.

He describes the sensory overload that hit him when he first arrived, and the beauty and serendipitous happenings that steered him to create the kind of music he had been wanting to make all his life.

Luke has written and recorded an album of his original music in Hoi An, Vietnam. He studied English Literature at Uni, then went on to do 3 Camp America seasons and two Ski seasons in France.

At the age of 23 he took a leap of faith and flew to Vietnam on a one-way ticket; met a musician from Israel and formed a band in Hoi An called The Langurs. Details of his Album soon to be released on Spotify will be provided below. He gigged continuously throughout the COVID years, also teaching English, guitar, piano, singing, Ukelele, and drums to expats in Hoi An.

After exploring the north, Hanoi and Cat Ba, he describes falling in love all over again in Hoi An. The vibe of this old town (or country town as he calls it) including the beach area of An Bang began to open doors to allow him to perform regularly and craft his own style and repertoire of music to an ever increasing local following.

Luke speaks to all of us who recognise the value of travel and especially to places where the culture is foreign to your own. He talks about how traveling and working things out as you go develops you as a person, and how it can broaden the mind to think outside the box.
I am sure you will resonate with Luke’s openness and honesty. His experiences and tales of relationships with locals and learning about Vietnam are generous and heart warming.
Make sure to look out for his album to be released in April 2023. Details to come shortly.

What About Vietnam – S4- E19 – Why Vietnam wins the hearts of the daring

What About Vietnam – S4- E19 – Why Vietnam wins the hearts of the daring

Is Vietnam for the daring? The brave hearted. Or is it a country that you can feel confident about challenging yourself in, no matter what is daring for you!

If Vietnam feels like a leap of faith to you, then this is the right show to tune into.

In todays show we explore some of the things that contribute to making Vietnam a country you can feel safe in, and yet you can push your own personal boundaries.

For some people visiting any country in the SEAsia region can feel like a deep dive into uncharted and circumspect waters.

If you'd like to experience Vietnam with a sense of curiosity and confidence then my guest today is just the person to allay any of your fears, real or otherwise.

Once a tourist to Vietnam from Barcelona Spain, now General Manager of the Fusion Original Saigon, my guest Alvaro Moreno does a wonderful job of identifying those often-unspoken gems that make travel so easy in Vietnam.

As a lover of travel Alvaro shares some of the ways in which Vietnam can offer the traveller the chance to challenge themselves in relative safety, and on a range of budgets.

He speaks about the high level of connectivity within the country digitally and how easy it is to travel about using various modes of transport, made easy to book on any mobile device through an App.

You may be surprised to hear his favourite foodie experience. We talk about the fact chefs in Vietnam are being adventurous with their menus and restaurant experiences, particularly in Saigon and Hanoi.

We touch on the growth of the country and its forward thinking that’s changing its appearance to the tourist and offering them more choices. A competitiveness that adds up to different levels of experiences in the country.

Born and raised in Valencia, Spain, Alvaro spent the first two decades of his life growing up, working and traveling around Europe. Back in 2021, Alvaro took a six-month sabbatical from his job at the Barcelo Hotel Group in Spain to take a trip of a lifetime through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China, Nepal and India. During the journey he decided to move to South East Asia, in part so he could continue exploring the region. However, he chose Vietnam to be his second home. The WHY will become apparent during the interview.

He has worked on the pre-opening phase of three hotels and one re-brand in Vietnam over the past 8 years, and he sits with great pride in his staff and hotel as GM of the Fusion Original Saigo

What About Vietnam - S4-16 - Ninh Binh - The mystical rival to Halong Bay

What About Vietnam - S4-16 - Ninh Binh - The mystical rival to Halong Bay

Ninh Binh stands out in more ways than one if you set your compass to the north of Vietnam. Located 60 miles south of Hanoi lies this magical, almost mystical province featuring mountainous peaks and a labrynth of waterways inviting you to explore its many viewpoints.

Sharp limestone peaks, shoot up from the ground reminiscent of what you might see doing the same thing out of water, in Halong bay. Which explains why they often refer to it as the Ha Long Bay on land. It is by all accounts Halong Bay’s mystical rival.

My guest, Jack Taylor joins me on the show. His talents lie in the skilful way he has captured the essence of the region in his videos. Jack, an English teacher by profession has been travelling and living abroad for most of his adult life. Spain for 3 years, China for 4, and now Thailand for 4 years has meant Jack has had a front row seat to some of SE Asia’s treasures. Don’t forget to check out his You Tube channel “I go cool places”.

As you will see in Jack’s video of Ninh Binh the outstanding beauty and serenity are breathtaking. Add to that a National park featuring a staggering amount of wildlife, and many pagodas including one of the biggest being the Bai Dinh Pagoda. You can easily get a sense of why some people think it has more to offer than Halong Bay. It is important to note that the Bai Dinh pagoda is considered a masterpiece of both nature and heritage, and it is the pride of Vietnamese people in terms of its quintessential architecture, culture and historical value. And, it’s NOT the major drawcard for the area.

Jack does a great job in giving us some handy tips for staying in the region, what are the best times to visit and some of “The Must Do” things. I hope you enjoy the show and will surely investigate this region as a place of surreal beauty, almost lost in time, close to Hanoi.
