    The Astrologer

    The Astrologer

"Spectacular! Thrilling! Different!" This is the quote that headlines the poster for the 1976 film: The Astrologer. Does it tell you who said such things? No. A very telling example for a film so rare and obscure that the only place one may see it is on a website called: archive.org.

Some films are forbidden fruit. But instead of possessing the sin of knowledge, they possess the sin of sheer and utter stupidity. In what may perhaps be the greatest piece of vanity art that has ever been captured on screen, the boys are duking it out with the gangly man child that is Craig Denney. A man who is credited with only one film ever in his short "career" as a filmmaker. A man who gives Tommy Wiseau a run for his money. A man who may or may not be dead under the most unusual circumstances.

    41. Murderock

Tonight is the coats night and the streets are to blame in Lucio Fulci's 1984 giallo: Murderock. The final giallo film the coats cover from the godfather of gore, filled with dancing, needles slowly piercing the breast plates of young women and more dancing! Will this final entry in the coats' giallo library for Fulci leave them dancing in the rain or rocking round the murder clock?

The coats are cruising through FUN CITY looking for bread crumbs that'll lead them to Fulci's 1982 giallo: "The New York Ripper". 39. The Psychic (sette note in nero)
The coats are channeling their clairvoyant sides for Lucio Fulci's 1977 giallo: "The Psychic". Visions of a wall bodies, yellow paper cigarettes, and horse girls, OH MY! One of the final few directors to seriously take on the subgenre past its prime, Fulci offers a compelling tale that's spoiled due to its own tagline. Will the coats be compelled by the power of the psychic or will they want to bury it behind a wall of cement and bricks? Listen now!

    38. A Lizard in a Woman's Skin

The coats are testifying in an open court that they indeed did not dissect living dogs in Lucio Fulci's 1971 giallo: "A Lizard in a Woman's Skin". Fulci's second foray into the giallo genre, that sees him branching into more of what we know and love him for: the gore! (even if there's only a few snippets of it). The gore-maestro's films always feature the hand of the director at work when it comes to style and movement, and "A Lizard.." is no exception. Listen in as the coats dissect one of the most famous films of the subgenre.

    37. Perversion Story (One on Top of the Other)

The coats are convinced that they're seeing double in Lucio Fulci's 1969 (haha) giallo: "Perversion Story". We find a classic tale of insurance scamming at the heart of a rather rudimentary plot for a "yellow" that slowly unravels into something worth the wait. A checkmark on the coat's list of giallos they've been eagerly awaiting to watch and you SHOULD too! Or not. It's your life. But it'd be better if you did, loser.

    35. Sleepless (Non ho sonno)

The coats are cozying up and getting ready to stay up all night to talk about Dario Argento's 2001 giallo: "Sleepless". Argento returns to the sub-genre with his bag of tricks and his ol' pals Goblin for a film that hearkens back to the golden age of his career and the giallo boom. This will also be the final installment in our Argentathon series (yes, we know we skipped a couple, but only to save your ears), which means we'll also be giving our rankings of Argento's entire giallography. What will take the #1 spot? The #2? The #3? Listen in as the coats coo over the maestro's masterpieces and cuss at the cud.

    34. The Stendhal Syndrome

The coats are covering themselves in paint to further explore the condition of Argento's 1996 giallo: "The Stendhal Syndrome". Using his daughter, Asia Argento, once again to explore the blurring of reality and identity when faced with TRAUMA (but not that trauma). Often overlooked, "Stendhal" has seen a resurgence in popularity and forced many to cast their eyes on this vintage 90's horror film. Will this giallo have the coats down with the Syndrome? Or will they put on a blonde wig and try to put this all behind them?

    32. Opera (Terror at the Opera)

    32. Opera (Terror at the Opera)

The coats are donning masks and counting crows at the theatre, where the main event is Dario Argento's 1987 giallo: "Opera". Arguably one of the last great films the Italian Hitchcock devised, "Opera" is a whirlwind of a giallo that pulls out many of Argento's old tricks. Although, this film may the most ingenious and greatest kill in giallo history. Will the coats give it a standing ovation or will they be throwing rotten tomatoes at the screen?

    Director
     -
    Dario Argento
    Starring
     - Cristina Marsillach
     - Daria Nicolodi
     - Ian Charleson

    31. Phenomena (Creepers)

    31. Phenomena (Creepers)

The coats missed their bus and are lost in a world of monkey butts and bug-talking little girls; it's none other than Dario Argento's 1985 giallo: "Phenomena". Dipping one toe in the fantastique realm, "Phenomena" is a perplexing film of high concepts and mysterious undertones. Will this giallo mark the downturn for Argento or will the coats be singing its praises in the Swiss alps?

    Starring
     - Jennifer Connelly
     - Daria Nicolodi
     - Donald Pleasance

    30. Tenebrae (Unsane)

    30. Tenebrae (Unsane)

The coats are climbing up the exterior wall and into the cubist house of the one and only Dario Argento, to cover what we here at Conspicuous Trenchcoats consider the greatest giallo of all time, 1982's: "Tenebrae". Made and released well outside the giallo boom years of the early 70's, "Tenebrae" marked a return to the sub-genre for Argento; following a brief foray into the fantastique world of "Suspiria" and "Inferno". It was initially released in theaters with a lukewarm reception and heavy censorship, but over time has become a favorite of fans and critics alike.

    Director
     -
    Dario Argento
    Starring
     - Anthony Francioso
     - Dario Nicolodi
     - John Saxon
