    Life after a wrongful conviction

    Life after a wrongful conviction

In this episode I speak to Jeffrey Deskovic about his personal journey of being wrongfully imprisoned at the age of 17 for the rape and murder of a 15 year old classmate. We talk about what his experience was like as a 16 year old being questioned by the police, being coerced into giving a false confession, what spending the next 16 years of life in a maximum security prision and what it was like getting exonerated and life after jail. We talk about the work he is doing now and what he hopes for the future.

This is an incredibly moving episode.

A little bit more about Jeffrey.

Jeffrey Deskovic, Esq., M.A., is the founder of The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice, which has freed 11 people and helped pass 3 laws aimed at preventing wrongful conviction. As part of the national coalition It Could Happen To You, which Jeff is an advisory board member of, an additional 6 laws were passed. Jeff's motivation is that he spent 16 years in prison-from age 17 to 32- for a murder and rape he did not commit, prior to being exonerated by DNA Testing. A documentary short about his advocacy and life post-exoneration, "Conviction", is available on Amazon Prime.

In this episode I share briefly some deep feelings that I have been sitting with. I have a deep knowing that I am meant to do more, be more. I started my Cree Language courses and am starting to recognize some words.

I share about my desire to belong and how I have never felt a sense of belonging, how I have struggled to connect and belong. I talk about this feeling that I have about needing to travel out west, a experience that I need....although I do not know what that is.

If you are Indigenous or self identify as Indigenous I would love to connect with you, to learn from you, to share your story on the Podcast, to support you in any way I can. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time.

Why Conversation & Community are so important for the grieving and healing process

Why Conversation & Community are so important for the grieving and healing process

I was recently a guest on the School of Healing Podcast hosted by Dominiece Clifton where we had an honest, vulnerable conversation about many difficult topics. We discuss suicide, grief, vulnerability, mental health, therapy, shadow work and more.

I wanted to share the podcast here so you can all hear it because it is in my opinion invaluable. I hope that you will follow along and listen to Dom's Podcast because there are so many great lessons to be learnt from her many guests and herself.

We're all doing the best we can

We're all doing the best we can

We're all doing our best...I truly believe that.

Whether its parenting, dealing with our mental health or just trying to get through the day, we are all doing our best. We wont always get it right, in fact we will fail over and over again but as long as we keep doing our best we can't really fail.

This past weekend I had the really hard and honest conversation with me kids about suicide. We talked about what suicide is, some reasons someone may choose it, their part in helping to prevent it by not bullying people and standing up and saying something if they see something.

We also spoke honestly about my moms suicide, there were lots of tears and just as many questions. I may fail as a mom sometimes but I will continue to make sure my kids know they can always speak to me, that no matter what I am a safe place for them.

Surviving & Thriving after Domestic Abuse with Stephanie (A personal Story)

Surviving & Thriving after Domestic Abuse with Stephanie (A personal Story)

In this episode I chat with Stephanie about her personal experience being in an abusive relationship, what that looked and felt like, how it all came crumbling down and how she rose from the ashes and now helps other women in similar situations as a life coach.

Stephanie shares some of the red flags in her relationship with her ex-fiancé, some she knew about and denied and some that she wasn't aware till after she called off her wedding. When her family & friends started to speak up and share their concerns about her impending marriage she really needed to work through if this was the person she was, the person she was meant to be with and if she wanted to move forward marrying this man.

Liberation & love is Stephanie's coaching program where she is helping women learn to love and trust themselves again and get to a place where they are confident with themselves and possibly looking ahead at building healthy relationships in the future.

Journal Entry #3 We are still here

Journal Entry #3 We are still here

In this episode I share some hard truths.
I start off with a Native American Peace Prayer.

As I was getting ready to edit an episode for todays postcast I found I kept running into issues with the episodes I was trying to edit so I decided to work on this journal entry I had recorded a few weeks ago but never ended up uploading. And just as I finished editing it I saw on my news feed... 160 unmarked graves on Penelakut Island near the Kuper Island Residential School.

I am taking this as a sign that what I had to say in this episode was meant to be heard.

We are still here, as Indigenous People we are thriving, we have survived. Even if you are like me and haven't grown up with the Culture but you know now and you can and are learning you matter. Your voice, your feelings matter.

In this episode I touch on my love for therapy, family secrets and realizations, acknowledging some hard truths, my white privilege, Canada day & wearing orange and much more.

30 Day Meditation Challenge - Day 30 with Marisa

Marisa teaches female leaders how to create mindful micro habits to help reduce stress, prioritize mental wellness and unlock inner radical resilience. She believes that you can thrive and rise up stronger than before from any challenge life has to offer. By simply committing to showing up for yourself imperfectly while creating small shifts/mini goals which will fuel the mind body connection further and motivate you to stay the course.  She often refers to this as building your "armour" in life. A strategy where you leverage your emotional intelligence and self awareness to pivot with courage without compromising your core values and beliefs.

She is a connector who believes that in community you can achieve so much more towards a common goal. She often hosts simplified wellness events within her community to educate, support with holistic practical tools and strategies which can be implemented immediately so you can begin to thrive through life.

    Generational Trauma & Relationships

    Generational Trauma & Relationships

In this episode I speak with Rebecca, a complex trauma therapist about Residential schools, Generational trauma and how these impact our relationships and Identity as Indigenous people.

We dig deep into how one generations experiences has directly impacted the next. We compare similarities in generational experiences and how it can be difficult to form relationships and find support.

Imposter syndrome, skin colour, loss of culture, tradition and language are just a few more things we talk about. The balance of finding yourself, how living in 2 different worlds is difficult. Learning, growth and white privilege.

How can we take back our Indigenous Culture, how can we claim ourselves?

    And of course systemic oppression.
