Nominative Determinism: Can your name dictate who you become?

Was Sue Yoo destined to be an attorney? Was Brian Overstreet a preordained street cleaner? If your last name is Smiley are you bound to be a dentist? The history of names took a fascinating turn in 11th century England when people first started using surnames that typically described a persons career, physical location or physical attributes. This practice eventually faded, but names still may determine your fate. On this episode of Wiki U Kyle and Jheisson explore nominative determinism which is the hypothesis that people tend to gravitate towards areas of work that fit their names.

Chiropractors: Glorified back crackers or actual science?

Chiropractors: Glorified back crackers or actual science?

You may want to think your relationship with your chiropractor after hearing this story. In 1895 D.D. Palmer was told a joke and laughed so hard that he smacked another man on the back inadvertently cracking his back. This event, combined with talking to a dead (ghost) doctor led to the founding of chiropractic, a pseudoscience that is a 450 MILLION DOLLAR industry in the United States! As crazy as that sounds, people go to chiropractors all the time to have their backs manipulated, adjusted, and tweaked, but is there any science behind or is it just nineteenth century quackery. Do they even deserve the title of doctor? On this episode of Wiki U Kyle and Jheisson crack open the history books of chiropractic and learn about the practice and it's controversial founder D.D. Palmer.
