You're Missing Out: A National Film Registry Podcast

Since 1989, the National Film Registry has selected 25 films each year that are deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". In each episode, Mike Natale (Yahoo!) and Tom Lorenzo (Men's Journal) bring on a special guest to take a look at one of the films from the registry, to get to the heart of why these films matter.

2023 National Film Registry (Live Reactions)

2023 National Film Registry (Live Reactions)

We're taking our own "movie trip through filmland" as we take a look at the 2023 National Film Registry inductees. Livestreamed on YouTube mere hours after the list was announced, hosts Mike Natale and Tom Lorenzo sat down with friend of the show Anthony DiCaprio (standing in for usual producer Kyle Lampar). Only Anthony knew what films were selected as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress this year. You'll hear Mike and Tom's real-time reactions to the selections, including a few films they themselves submitted to the NFR for consideration.

Surprise! Happy Halloween! While you get your favorite horror films ready for your evening viewing, we've got a special treat for you: Tom Lorenzo's audio diary from his eight days down in Austin, Texas for Fantastic Fest 2023! Hear him speak about the wide range of genre films he saw at the festival, from horror to action to...whatever you want to call The People's Joker.

Mike, Tom and Kyle reflect on the third class of 25 films inducted into the registry, giveout superlatives to the standout performances and craftspeople, reflect on their registry submissions, and look ahead to new adventures in Season 4.

We're talking about actor/director Spencer Williams' 1941 morality play The Blood of Jesus. We tackle the equally complex topics of race, religion, and whether Madea Goes to Jail or Boo 2! "Real life screened more daringly than it's ever been before!"

One of the few films whose reputation is based as much on what isn't onscreen as what is, writer Cat Bowen joins us to talk about Orson Welles' famously interfered-with follow-up to Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons. BONUS: People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive

BONUS: People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive

The You're Missing Out team were hoping to have some much needed rest over Labor Day weekend. They thought "Let's do a simple, silly bonus episode this week." They thought "Let's get some friends together, let's find an idea that's short, and fun, and will only take about an hour."

They were gravely mistaken. This episode was ill-advised.

You're Missing Out is normally about the National Film Registry, but there are, of course, other equally prestigious honors given out annually. In this bonus episode, we take a look at one such honor:

Every year since 1985, the editors of People magazine have selected one celebrity to declare the Sexiest Man Alive. The criteria? The man must be culturally, historically, or aesthetically attractive. This week on You’re Missing Out, we’ll take a look at all of these celebs, to try to get to the heart of why they were selected, and why they’re still sexy.

This week, we’re joined by guests Bella Zaydenberg and Carrie McCabe to talk about People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive.

Once upon a time, the Girl with the Curls was the Most Powerful Woman in Hollywood. Bella Zaydenberg (Yahoo!) joins us to talk about film icon Mary Pickford, and the film that both cemented her stardom and arguably stunted her artistic growth, The Poor Little Rich Girl (1917).

"He's as accustomed to the whip as I am to poverty."

You might know Sholem Aleichem's celebrated comedic hero of Yiddish literature, Tevye (or Tevya) from the musical Fiddler on the Roof. But decades earlier, titan of the Yiddish theatre scene Maurice Schwartz got a camera and a cast together and brought Aleichem's stories to the silver screen for the first time with Tevye.

We teamed up with Daniel Zana & Harry Ottensoser from Jews on Film to discuss the significance of this, the first non-English film ever inducted into the National Film Registry. We look at how it reflects the culture of the Jewish diaspora of both Aleichem and Schwartz's era, the brief but impactful Yiddish Cinema movement, and of course...tradition!

We'll chat James Whale, Boris Karloff, Universal Monsters, and of course, Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing. And then...

    "Let The Hunt Begin"

That's right, we're talking 2002's Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. We'll chat Jango Fett, wonky controls, and what one should yell if they've been lit on fire by a wrist-mounted flame thrower.

YMO 1.0: The King Kong Special

YMO 1.0: The King Kong Special

Way, way back in 2018, our hosts Mike Natale and Tom Lorenzo had a different podcast (with the same name, because names are hard, y'all). On that show, they devoted a whole episode to the history of the mighty cinematic ape known as King Kong, who had recently leaped from the silver screen to the Great White Way.

As a supplement to our recent episode on 1933's King Kong with Graham Skipper, we've dug out this vintage podcast episode where the Mike and Tom of the past discuss every major Kong movie up until then, as well as the Broadway musical based on the character.

We'll be back to National Film Registry talk next week, but for now, enjoy the King Kong Special!
