We are all sinners. It's a statement we hear often as Christians. We hear it when someone tries to help us feel better after we have messed up. We hear it when someone is trying to excuse their own errors and shortcomings. It sounds biblical, but is it? It is true that "All have sinned and fall short of the kingdom of God" and "None is righteous, no not one". But what about the idea that we "ARE all SINNERS?" In 1 Cor 6:9, Paul lists numerous groups of sinners, idolaters, swindlers, thieves, drunkards and declares that "the unrighteous will not enter the Kingdom of God". in verse 11, he makes a huge statement. After listing off a number of groups of people who practice immoral, sinful behavior, Paul says "and such were some of you". Wait! what? Such WERE some of you? He goes on to say you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified. We no longer identify with these behaviors, we should no longer "practice" such behavior, because Christ did a work, He justified us. He santified us. He redeemed us. How can you continue to live practicing behavior that He sacrificed himself for in order to set us free?
