Episode 55: The British East India Company

Episode 55: The British East India Company

On December 31, 1600, Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to a group of London merchants for exclusive overseas trading rights with the East Indies. The new English East India Company was a monopoly in the sense that no other British subjects could legally trade in that territory, but it faced stiff competition from the Spanish and Portuguese, who already had trading outposts in India, and also the Dutch East Indies Company, founded in 1602.

Before the East India Company, most clothes in England were made out of wool and designed for durability, not fashion. But that began to change as British markets were flooded with inexpensive, beautifully woven cotton textiles from India, where each region of the country produced cloth in different colors and patterns. When a new pattern arrived, it would suddenly become all the rage on the streets of London.
After the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the EIC earned rights to collect land revenue in Bengal. diversifying it into a tax collector.

With the colonization of North America, a vast global market opened up for trade in goods across various colonial regions.

"Due donne trattengono l’uomo con forza per sopraffarlo. Gli sono addosso. Una spinge i pugni sul suo petto per impedire che si alzi, l’altra tiene ben ferma la testa e affonda la lama nel collo. Tutto avviene in fretta, drammaticamente..." Buon ascolto!

    The Tyler Hollywood Show (01/16/15)

    The Tyler Hollywood Show (01/16/15)
Season 8 Episode 2 On the season opener, Tyler asked a rhetorical question. "Why does Al Shartpton call himself a reverend? He's as much a Reverend than I am a black man." On Tuesday, Tyler exposed the listeners to the real Al Sharpton, race hustler and tax cheat. "In November 2014, The New York Times exposed his fraudulent life, writing, "As Al Sharpton rose, so did his unpaid taxes." The article lists a rap sheet of unpaid taxes, rent, and other bills, highlighting that Sharpton and his business owe more than $4.5 million in taxes." The man with the name on the marquee then backed up what he said on Monday's show when he called Sharpton, the top cop, The Squatter and the Mayor "the four most complicit men that led to the shooting of two NYC officers. "Obama and Holder, and all of their ilk, know that some activities (such as street rabble-rousing) are beneath them. Therefore, they plant the seeds of hatred; Sharpton and his ilk stir up the soil so that the seeds will grow. They provide the poison; the Sharptons stir it into the water and encourage blacks to drink up. In Obama's eyes, Sharpton is merely a tool." All that and more on The Tyler Hollywood Show.

    1502 The Battle of Plassey

    1502 The Battle of Plassey

From early in 1754 the Seven Year war started to bubble into full scale global conflict. In North America French and British colonists clashed over trade and disputed territory. In May 1756 the first naval action took place at Minorca in the Mediterranean where the British were forced to withdraw, opening up hostilities in Europe. In India the French and British East India Companies vied for influence over the region in a series for proxy conflicts as each would support local rulers against one another. At Plassey Robert Clive won a victory that would help secure the close relationship between Britain and India for the next 200 years. Dur: 16mins File: .mp3
