21 | Cancel The Olympics Part 1: NOlympics Los Angeles and the 2028 LA Olympics

After a week off, Miguel shares Part 1 of his Cancel the Olympics series this week. In Part 1 of the series, Miguel spoke to Eric and Taylor, 2 members of NOlympics Los Angeles, "launched by the Housing & Homelessness Committee of the Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017. The coalition has since expanded to include over two dozen partner organizations based in Los Angeles and California, as well as a growing transnational movement with dozens of groups around the world (https://nolympicsla.com/about/)." Follow them on Twitter: @NOlympicsLA

First, Eric and Taylor explained how Los Angeles won the 2028 Olympics instead of the 2024 Olympics and broke down who the prominent stakeholders were that made sure Los Angeles hosted the 2028 games. Also, Miguel, Eric, and Taylor discuss the legacy of the 1984 Olympics and its impact on Black and Brown people, the working-class, and the poor.

In particular, Eric and Taylor explain how LAPD Chief Daryl Gates conducted gang sweeps via Operation Hammer before the 1984 games. They also speak about next month's Summer Olympics Games in Tokyo and the work the comrades in Japan have done to fight the capitalist Olympic machine, plus more!

Lastly, Miguel gives you his Molotov MVP for episode 21, Las Vegas Raiders Defensive End Carl Nassib, who last week was the first active NFL player to come out as openly gay. He ends the podcast with a different approach to his Chicana/o Sports History segment. On Saturday, June 19, 2021, a video went viral on social media of an ugly, racist ending to a CIF San Diego Section championship High School Boys basketball game between Coronado High School and Orange Glen High school. It is important to note that Coronado High School is predominately white and from an affluent area of San Diego, and Orange Gen High school is predominantly Mexican and from a working-class San Diego area city, Escondido.

After Coronado's buzzer-beating three-pointer in overtime to beat Orange Glen 60-57, players and fans associated with Coronado started hurling corn tortillas towards Orange Glen players and coaches. Orange Glen players, coaches, and fans were outraged and called the incident racist. As a result, a Press conference was held on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, by players, parents, coaches, and Orange Glen High School supporters, cond

Will the Tokyo Olympics Ever Happen?

Will the Tokyo Olympics Ever Happen?

Will the Tokyo Olympics Ever Happen? The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was one of the many casualties of the Worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Only three (3) prior times in the modern history of the Summer Games have the Olympics been cancelled. In early 2020 the IOC decided to delay the start of the games due to the worldwide medical crisis. Now as the year 2021 approaches, and the world is still in the grips of dealing with the impact of the pandemic, will the games be further delayed, or even cancelled? Will the worldwide Taekwondo athletes that have been training so hard be deprived of their shot at Olympic glory? If the games take place, what impact will the interruption of sparring training have on their performance? What protocols will need to be in place to keep athletes and spectators safe if the games do take place? These questions are explored by Taekwondo Life Magazine's host, Marc Zirogiannis, in this look at the modern history of the games.

POWER PLAYERS 009 - Amanda Kessel

POWER PLAYERS 009 - Amanda Kessel

“Just thinking that I lost this love of my life was something that I was really having a hard time to come to terms with.” - Amanda Kessel

Olympic gold and silver medal winning professional hockey player Amanda Kessel and Danielle McCartan have an open conversation about Amanda’s concussion-related mental health struggles and discuss a pragmatic plan to grow the women’s game efficiently and effectively. What took the NHL so long to get involved? Furthermore, we’ll contrast the way of life of NHL players (of which Amanda has intimate knowledge: her brother Phil Kessel is alternate captain of the Arizona Coyotes AND she is a New York Rangers ambassador) to that of professional women’s league. Amanda outlines the impetus behind the 200+ player boycott of the NWHL and USA Hockey.

    We'll also tackle:

    • NHL’s return to play plan
    • A deep dive into concussion-related depression
    • Competitiveness in the Kessel household
    • Playing on boys teams
    • The manifestation of statistical growth in girls hockey by being a New York Rangers hockey ambassador
    • Being part of NHL's All-Star weekend 2019
    • What would a W-NHL look like?
    • AK28 clothing line
    • ...and SO much more!!

A listener question from Joe in Long Island: Would a 12 team women's league (2 six team divisions) and a 54 game schedule be plausible?

POWER PLAYERS 005 - Monica Abbott

POWER PLAYERS 005 - Monica Abbott

A discussion with an Olympic Athlete about the delay, staying prepared, advice to young softball players, and about the radioactivity in Japan ahead of the games.

We need to take care of the world first: the Olympics is the world’s game”.

    -Monica Abbott

Softball, after a 12 year hiatus, is again recognized as an olympic sport... but we have to wait one more year to watch Team USA pitcher Monica Abbott and company potentially win gold in Japan. Abbott and fellow pitcher Kat Osterman are the only two players to bridge the gap between the 2008 silver medal winning team and on the upcoming olympic team.

    Abbott and I talk about:

    • The emotions when USA Softball was informed of the Olympic delay on a team phone call
    • “Life put on hold another year”: A world-class female athlete's perspective on sacrifices
    • “We had a big talk about that”: Thoughts on the possibility of playing in front of not one, single fan
    • Amidst the pandemic, additional significance in wearing "USA" in these upcoming Olympic Games
    • As players, we always replay the plays that we could have changed. What is one play from the 2008 loss in the Gold Medal game that Abbott would change the outcome of?
    • An Olympic delay: staying motivated physically and mentally
    • Pushing the naysaying thoughts from out of your mind
    • A unique perspective on the impact of COVID-19 on those athletes that have lost a season of ball
    • How could the players work to overcome the “lost time” from COVID-19

AT HOME WORK FOR PLAYERS OF ALL AGES:

    • Abbott's conditioning and skill work (with minimal equipment) recommendations
    • How to refocus after a stray thought pops into your mind while playing- examples she’s experienced
    • 2021 OLYMPICS
    • Leveraging experience of playing professionally in Japan to benefit 2021 Team USA softball
    • Has the US Olympic committee debriefed the athletes about the radioactivity in Fukushima?
    • Is Abbott worried?

    MY FORMER PLAYER'S QUESTIONS:

    • Anna from NJ: What are your thoughts on the mound during an Olympic game?
    • Jenna from NJ: What is your favorite pitch? Why is it so effective? Favorite part about being a pitcher?

    LISTENER QUESTIONS:

    • John from Long Island
    • Josh from Connecticut
    • Mike from New Jersey

The last time there were no Olympics [rebroadcast]

The last time there were no Olympics [rebroadcast]

This episode is a rebroadcast of our look at the 1980 Olympic boycott. It happened 40 years ago, but contains some lessons for what athletes are facing today. On this day, BMX competition was originally scheduled to begin in Tokyo. But in March, as rising COVID-19 cases sent nations scrambling, the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Paralympic Committee announced that Canadians would not go to the 2020 Games. Two days later, the IOC said it would postpone the 2020 Olympics for a year.

Recently, as we passed the one-year-to-go-until-the-rescheduled-Olympics date, talk of cancelling the 2021 Games started up. On July 22, the president of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee Yoshiro Mori said to Japanese media that if the pandemic continued has it had been so far, the Games could not go ahead in 2021. A few days before that, the Kyodo news agency released the results of a poll that showed that only 23.9 per cent of the people surveyed throughout Japan thought the Olympics should be held. A segment as large as 36.4 per cent thought the Games should be postponed again. From the survey, 33.7 per cent said the Games should be cancelled.

With the threat of Olympic cancellation creeping in once again, let’s listen to track cyclists Gordon Singleton and Steve Bauer, and road cyclist Louis Garneau as they discuss the time, 40 years ago, that the Olympics didn’t happen for Canadian athletes.
