Beer Styles # 45 - American Style Pale Ale
    American-Style Pale Ale

-Color – Deep golden to copper or light brown

-Clarity: Chill haze is acceptable at low temperatures. Hop haze is allowable at any temperature.

-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Low caramel malt aroma is allowable. Low to medium maltiness may include low caramel malt character.

-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Hop aroma and flavor is high, exhibiting floral, fruity (berry, tropical, stone fruit and other), sulfur/diesel-like, onion-garlic-catty, citrusy, piney or resinous character that was originally associated with American-variety hops. Hops with these attributes now also originate from countries other than the USA.

    -Perceived Bitterness: Medium to medium-high

    -Body : Medium

    -ABV: 4.4%-5.4%

    -Glassware: Pint Glass

    Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)

    Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
    Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

    ABV: 5.6%

Notes: Heavy on hops, that was always the brewery plan. So in 1980, we loaded Pale Ale up with Cascade—a new hop at the time named after the mountain range—and the intense aromas of pine and citrus sparked the American craft beer revolution. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor.

    Zombie Dust
    3 Floyds Brewing Co.

    Indiana, United States

    ABV: 6.2%

Notes: This intensely hopped and gushing undead Pale Ale will be one’s only respite after the zombie apocalypse. Created with our marvelous friends in the comic industry. Formerly known as Cenotaph: A medium bodied single hop beer showcasing Citra hops from the Yakima Valley, USA.

    Beer Styles # 30 - Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest

    Beer Styles # 30 - Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest
    Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest

    A.Subcategory: Dortmunder/European-Style Export

    (Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)

Sometimes referred to as a “Dortmunder export,” the European-Style Export has the malt-forward flavor and sweetness of a German-style Helles, but the bitter base of a German-style Pilsener. This lager is all about balance, with medium hop character and firm but low malt sweetness. Look for toasted malt flavors and spicy floral hop aromas.

-Color – Straw to Deep Golden

-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present

    - Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Sweet malt character should be low and should not be caramelly

    - Hop Aroma and Flavor: Very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.

    Perceived Bitterness : Medium

    -Four Noble Hops
    oHallertauer Mittelfrüh.
    oTettnang.
    oSpalt.
    oSaaz.

    -Body: Medium

    -ABV: 4.0%-4.8%

Glassware: Pilsner Glass or Pokal - Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass, shaped like a trumpet at times, that captures the sparkling effervesces and colors of a Pils while maintaining its head. A Pokal is a European Pilsner glass with a stem.

Benefits: Showcases color, clarity and carbonation. Promotes head retention.

    B. Subcategory: German-Style Oktoberfest/Wiesn

Today's Oktoberfest beers are similar to Dortmunder/European-Style Export beers

    -Color – Straw to Golden

-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present

-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Sweet maltiness is low to medium-low

-Hop Aroma and Flavor: Very low to low

-Perceived Bitterness : Very low to low and in balance with the low sweet maltiness

    -Body: Medium

    -ABV: 4.0%-4.8%

    Style: European Export / Dortmunder

    Notes / Commercial Description:
Yes, it's known for winning medals worldwide. But locally, it's known as "Dort," our flagship lager that humbly maintains its smooth, balanced (and charmingly unpretentious) ways.

A smooth, award-winning (and deceptively unassuming) balance of sweet malt and dry hop flavors.

    World Beer Championships
16-Time Medal Winner Since 1994 (World Champion, Gold, Silver)

    Great American Beer Festival Awards
    1990 Gold Medal Winner
