Where Tech Takes Us: From AI Detours to 5G's Future
What if your AI assistant suddenly started hallucinating while you were on a drive? Could it take you to a dead end or even worse? We dive into this humorous scenario in our latest episode of Techcetra. From there, we delve into the latest from the Mobile World Congress Barcelona, exploring cutting-edge technologies like Lenovo's translucent display laptop, Motorola's bendable smartphone that doubles as a smartwatch, and Huawei AI-driven smartphone that tracks eyeball movements to open apps. We also discuss the exponential growth of 5G smartphone users in India and the global shift towards next-gen connectivity. Did you know that by 2030, India is projected to have 130 million 5G users, while globally, the number is expected to reach a staggering 1.67 billion? But amidst the excitement, we address the elephant in the room: health concerns related to 5G cell towers. 5G Smartphone Shipments to Double in 2021 Despite Component Shortages

5G Smartphone Shipments to Double in 2021 Despite Component Shortages

We saw the first wave of 5G smartphone launches in H1 2019 with prices above $1,000. These premium smartphones gave way to a completely new pricing landscape in just around a year, with the most affordable 5G smartphone coming under $200 in China in 2020. Moving into 2021, we have the ongoing issue of component shortages across the semiconductor industry.

In our previous podcast, we discussed the auto sector’s semiconductor shortage and how it may not ease until late 2021. But how will the chip and component shortage impact the smartphone market in 2021? Will we see the prices of 5G smartphones going down further or will they stabilize? While operators in the US are pushing for mmWave 5G, the other regions are mostly looking at Sub-6GHz. So, will Sub-6GHz 5G smartphones outsell the mmWave ones?

In the latest episode of ‘The Counterpoint Podcast’, host Peter Richardson is joined by Associate Director Brady Wang and Research Analyst Parv Sharma to discuss our growth outlook for 5G smartphones, expectations for 2021 and a lot more.

How & When Shall We See the First sub-$200 5G Smartphone?

How & When Shall We See the First sub-$200 5G Smartphone?

There are various factors that drive the cost of 5G smartphones. As the technology is still in its nascent stage, smartphone makers need to add a separate baseband, RF antennas, and passive filters for 5G to work. But there are other factors, such as high refresh rate displays, bigger batteries and multiple camera setups that drive the cost of 5G smartphones.

In the latest episode of ‘The Counterpoint Podcast’, host Peter Richardson is joined by analyst Shobhit Srivastava and Ethan Qi to discuss factors that are driving the Bill of Material (BoM) costs of 5G smartphones. In the discussion, we deep dive into differences between Sub-6GHz and mmWave implementations, and the additional costs that are involved with mmWave. We also touched upon the role of component vendors in bringing down the cost and more.
