    "My Love is Your Love" (1998): WHITNEY HOUSTON - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 4}

    In the FINAL part of our Whitney Houston “My Love is Your Love” (1998) extravaganza, Angie and Steffi continue their deep dive into the era. We discuss all the promo Whitney & Mariah did for “When You Believe”, Whitney’s appearance at a Pride event, the iconic music videos, Super Tuesday and of course, the legacy of the “My Love is Your Love” album & era. Has Steffi’s feelings evolved since episode 1? We shall see.

    This is the second part of our era breakdown and the final part of our “My Love is Your Love” discussion.

    In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we continue breaking down Whitney Houston’s “My Love is Your Love” era. We talk all about Whitney & Mariah’s “When You Believe” promo and ponder if they truly look like the lesbian couple Twitter wants them to be. We then get into our favorite music videos from the era and Whitney’s memorable live performances. Steffi manages to weave in Todd Haynes to discussion and we reflect on the legacy of this album & era in Whitney’s career and overall narrative.

    Again, this is the final part of our 4-part conversation and part 2 of 2 of the era breakdown.

    Album Info: My Love Is Your Love is the fourth studio album by American singer Whitney Houston, released worldwide on November 17, 1998. It was Houston's first studio album in eight years, following I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990) although she had participated on three movie soundtracks during that period.     "My Love is Your Love" (1998): WHITNEY HOUSTON - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 3}

    In part 3 of our Whitney Houston “My Love is Your Love” (1998) journey, Angie and Steffi break down the era. We discuss Whitney’s rise as a movie star leading up to the album, her chaotic relationship/ marriage to Bobby Brown, Robyn Crawford’s departure, the iconic Dolce & Gabbana looks, and the narratives that Team Whitney & Arista leaned on during the promotion of the album.

    This is the first part of our era breakdown. We will wrap our era and overall “My Love is Your Love” discussion in part 4.

    In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we breakdown the behemoth era that was Whitney Houston’s “My Love is Your Love.” We get into Whitney Houston’s film career and share our favorite Whitney Houston film. We also talk about Whitney’s need to pivot during this era for multiple reasons: evolution of music, 8 year solo studio gap, and Bobby Brown. Additionally, we share our thoughts on Robyn Crawford’s role in Whitney Houston’s life/ career and the money issues that started to become prevalent during this time. Plus, a fun discussion on Whitney’s iconic Dolce & Gabbana looks and marketing to the MTV generation of the late 90s.

    Again, this is part 3 of the conversation and part 1 of 2 of the era breakdown. We will wrap our era and overall “My Love is Your Love” discussion in part 4.

    In this episode, Angie and Steffi continue their review of Whitney Houston’s “My Love is Your Love” (1998) album. We are reviewing the album track by track. As we do in all of our Diva Discography episodes, part 1 (technically this is part 2) is an in-depth review and discussion of EVERY SINGLE TRACK of the album.

    "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" (1998): LAURYN HILL - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 3}

    In part 3 of our Lauryn Hill “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” (1998) saga, Angie and Steffi break down the era. We discuss tension within The Fugees in the leadup to Lauryn Hill going solo, Robert Glasper’s (one-sided?) feud, the theme-specific marketing & rollout of the era, and how Lauryn bowed out of music when she was on top - much to the chagrin of the industry & the public. Plus, a discussion on Lauryn Hill’s post-Miseducation years and her “mis” reputation as a performer.

    We also briefly discuss our thoughts on Michelle Williams’ voice performance for Britney Spears’ memoir. “OH YEA. FO SHIZ. FO SHIZ. GINUWINE. WAT’S UP HOMIE?”.

    In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we deep dive into Lauryn Hill’s very busy “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” era. We talk about how Lauryn Hill may have been underestimated artistically as the only female in The Fugees & as a new mother in the leadup to the album. Additionally, we discuss claims of Lauryn Hill being difficult to work with, her notorious reputation as a live performer today and how a young 23 year old Lauryn Hill made Grammy history back in 1999.

    Again, this is part 3 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to parts 1 & 2 where we discussed the album track by track.

    We hope you enjoyed our Lauryn Hill  “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” journey.

    Album Info: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the only solo studio album by American singer and rapper Lauryn Hill. It was released on August 25, 1998, by Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a neo soul and R&B album with some songs based in hip hop soul and reggae. Its lyrics touch upon Hill's pregnancy and the turmoil within her former group the Fugees, along with themes of love and God. The album's title was inspired by the film and autobiographical novel The Education of Sonny Carson, and Carter G. Woodson's The Mis-Education of the Negro.

    "The Velvet Rope" (1997): JANET JACKSON - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}

    We are back for PART 2 of our Janet Jackson “The Velvet Rope” journey. In this episode, Angie and Steffi break down the era!

    This week, Angie is back for our intro and we catch up on our Oscar & Razzie Moment of the Week. We also read an updated review from THE Nicole Scherzinger (Nicole, this is between me, and you, and you) and discuss our thoughts on Janet’s - if we can call it that - The Velvet Rope 25 campaign.

    In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we talk about the relationship between Janet & René Elizondo Jr. and how that ultimately fell apart during The Velvet Rope era. We also discuss mental health & the way 90s media sensationalized depression, queer identity, piercings, tattoos, Janet’s iconic RED hair, and the undeniable impact of The Velvet Rope on today’s R&B music scene. The Janet propaganda continues. Sign up for the cause today.

    Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track.

    We hope you enjoyed our Janet Jackson “The Velvet Rope” journey!

    Album Info: The Velvet Rope is the sixth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. The album was released on October 7, 1997, through Virgin Records. Prior to its release, she renegotiated her contract with Virgin for US$80 million, the largest recording contract in history at that time. Upon experiencing an emotional breakdown, Jackson began facing a long-term case of depression. She in turn developed her new record as a concept album, using introspection as its theme. Its title is a metaphor for emotional boundaries, as well as an allusion to an individual's need to feel special. Its lyrics address subject matter such as depression, self-worth, social networking, and domestic violence. It also encompasses themes of sexuality, including BDSM, sexual orientation and same-sex relationships. Due to its sexually explicit content, the album reinforced Jackson's public image as a sex symbol and as one of the most erotic vocalists of the 1990s. Its incorporation of social issues regarding sexual orientation and combating homophobia also established her reputation as a gay icon and received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music.

    "The Velvet Rope" (1997): JANET JACKSON - Track by Track Review | Diva Discography {Part 1}

    Continuing on with our Anniversary Divas series, Angie and Steffi go track by track, discussing & analyzing Janet Jackson’s deeply personal album: “The Velvet Rope” (1997).

    As we do in all of our Diva Discography episodes, part 1 is an in-depth review and discussion on EVERY SINGLE TRACK of the album. We then end our conversation sharing our Top 3 favorite songs from the album, 1 song we’d cut, and the underrated gem.

    Make sure you tune in next week for part 2 when we talk about Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope era.

    "Butterfly" (1997): MARIAH CAREY - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}

    "Butterfly" (1997): MARIAH CAREY - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}

    We are back for PART 2 of our Mariah Carey “Butterfly” journey. In this episode, Angie and Steffi break down the era!

    This week, we read listener feedback and reviews and discuss our thoughts on Mariah’s Butterfly 25 campaign.

    In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we talk about Tommy Motttola, Derek Jeter, and that one time Da Brat & Mariah escaped Sing Sing to get some fries at Burger King! We also discuss 90s media culture and how BRAVE Mariah was for promoting/addressing the dramas of her marriage to the man…who just so happens to be her boss & head of the label. Whew. There’s so much to unpack her: Mariah’s feelings on her multiracial identity, her place in the Vocal Trinity, and her dog Jack. Lambs, we hope we did your girl proud. Mariah, spread your wings and fly.

    Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track.

    We hope you enjoyed our Mariah Carey “Butterfly” journey!

    Album Info: Butterfly is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, released on September 16, 1997, by Columbia Records. The album contains both hip hop and urban adult contemporary sounds, as well as some softer and more contemporary melodies. Throughout the project, Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she had written and produced most of the material from her previous albums. She also worked with many famed hip hop producers and rappers, such as Sean "Puffy" Combs, Q-Tip, Missy Elliott and the Trackmasters. With the latter acts producing most of the album, Butterfly deviated from the adult contemporary sound of Carey's previous albums.

    "Butterfly" (1997): MARIAH CAREY - Track by Track Review | Diva Discography {Part 1}

    Welcome to our Anniversary Divas Series! 2022 marks the 25th anniversary and several career cementing and music defining projects for our divas. Picture it: the year is 1998. And within several weeks of one another, Mariah Carey’s “Butterfly”, Janet Jackson’s “The Velvet Rope”, Whitney Houston & Brandy’s “Cinderella” and the Spice Girls’ “Spiceworld” were all released into the world and pop culture was never quite the same again. Oh, and a little album called “Thriller” by an up and coming artist named Michael Jackson is also celebrating its 40th anniversary year, as well. We hope you enjoy these next episodes as we celebrate these amazing projects and artists!

    To kick off Anniversary Divas, Angie and Steffi are going track by track, reviewing arguably this diva’s BEST album in her discography: Butterfly (1997).

    At the top of this episode, we discuss a HUGE diva headline. RIH RIH AND THE SUPERBOWL. We share some songs we hope make the set list and briefly discuss other potential Superbowl Headliners. Also, during our Oscar & Razzie Moment of the week, we discuss the relevancy of anniversaries and whether or not artists should celebrate these milestones for their previous work.

    As we do in all of our Diva Discography episodes, part 1 is an in-depth review and discussion on EVERY SINGLE TRACK of the album. We then end our conversation sharing our Top 3 favorite songs from the album, 1 song we’d cut, and the underrated gem.

    "It's About Time" (1992): SWV - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}

    Welcome back to PART 2 of our SWV “It’s About Time” journey. In this episode, Angie and Steffi break down the era!

    In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we discuss SWV’s faulty contract and (yet again) how one particular member was more or less pushed as the lead of the group which caused major tension within SWV. We also talk about Michael Jackson’s generosity, the confusing chaos of SWV’s music videos, and two of our favorite live performances. And as per usual, we end the episode reflecting on the ultimate impact that the SWV’s’ “It’s About Time” had in music and the girl group pantheon.

    Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track.

    We hope you enjoyed our SWV “It’s About Time” journey!

    Album Info: It's About Time is the debut studio album by American female R&B trio SWV. It was released by RCA Records on October 27, 1992, in the United States. It earned 11 Billboard Music Award nominations and became the 16th best-selling album of 1993 in the United States, with 2,100,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. It also earned SWV a nomination for Best New Artist at the 36th Grammy Awards. In 1996, It's About Time was certified 3× platinum, for shipping over 3,000,000 albums in the US alone. The album spawned five hit singles with "I'm So into You", "Downtown", "Weak", a remixed version of "Right Here/Human Nature" (the latter two reached number one on the R&B singles chart, with "Weak" being their biggest and only number-one pop hit), and "You're Always on My Mind" (shortened to "Always on My Mind" for single release). A remixed version of "Anything" appeared on the soundtrack of the film Above the Rim in 1994 and was released as the final single from It's About Time.

    "It's About Time" (1992): SWV - Track by Track Review | Diva Discography {Part 1}

    We’re going back to the 90s and talking about one of Angie’s favorite girl groups of all time, the Sisters With Voices: SWV.

    In this episode of Diva Dailies, Angie and Steffi review SWV’s debut album entitled, “It’s About Time” (1992). But before we talk about the album, we read listener feedback (which, THANK YOU FOR THAT) and briefly talk about our anticipation (or lack thereof) for Beyoncé’s imminent Renaissance.

    Also fair warning: a very cringe/corny/unexpected edit happens in this episode. That one goes out to the Killing Eve fans, lol.

    As we do in all of our Diva Discography episodes, part 1 is an in-depth review and discussion on EVERY SINGLE TRACK of the album. We then end our conversation sharing our Top 3 favorite songs from the album, 1 song we’d cut, and the underrated gem.

    "Funky Divas" (1992): EN VOGUE - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}

    Welcome back to PART 2 of our En Vogue “Funky Divas” journey. In this episode, Angie and Steffi break down the era!

    Before we get into the meat of the episode, we read some of your listener feedback and talk about BEYONCE’S  imminent RENAISSANCE. Some controversial Beyoncé opinions are shared. Plus, our album predictions!

    Like in all our Diva Dailies episodes, we give context and explain where En Vogue was at during this point in their career and why they made this particular album. We then talk about their experience being the opening act for Luther Vandross (spoiler alert: DIVO DEMANDS) and also what led to the ultimate demise of the group’s original makeup. Of course, we get into our favorite music videos & live performances, and end the episode reflecting on the ultimate impact that En Vogue’s “Funky Divas” had in music and the girl group pantheon.

    Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track.

    We hope you enjoyed our En Vogue “Funky Divas” journey!

    Album Info: Funky Divas is the second studio album by American recording group En Vogue, released by Atlantic Records division East West on March 24, 1992 in the United States. Conceived after the success of their Grammy Award–nominated debut album Born to Sing (1990), En Vogue reteamed with their founders Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy to work on the entire album. As with Born to Sing, the pair borrowed from contemporary R&B, new jack swing, and hip hop, while also incorporating classic soul, blues and doo-wop elements, particularly on its on two Sparkle cover versions, as well as, in the case of "Free Your Mind," heavy metal sounds.

    "CrazySexyCool" (1994): TLC - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}

    Welcome back to PART 2 on our Crazy, Sexy, Cool journey of TLC’s 2nd album. In this episode, Angie and Steffi breakdown the era.

    Like in all our Diva Dailies episodes, we give context and explain where TLC was at in their careers and why they made the album. We then discuss the controversies that plagued the group during this time including their infamous bankruptcy, boyfriend troubles, and yes - the fire incident. Because this is an era breakdown, we also introduce some new segments to the podcast: Video Killed the Radio Star (sharing our favorite music videos from the era), The Mic Is On (discussing the live performances from the era), and But We Need the Audience to Buy the Album (exploring the different marketing strategies of the artist & what sets them a part from the rest). And yes, there are A LOT of receipts, WHITNEY.

    Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track.

    We hope you enjoyed our TLC “CrazySexyCool” journey!

    Album Info: CrazySexyCool is the second studio album by American girl group TLC. It was released on November 15, 1994, by LaFace and Arista Records. The album saw the group reunite with producers Dallas Austin, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Jermaine Dupri as well as new collaborators Organized Noize and Chucky Thompson, and also featured contributions from Sean "Puffy" Combs who helped with the notable hip hop soul sound. CrazySexyCool featured hip hop beats, funk, deep grooves, propulsive rhythms and smooth production. The album's lyrical content was seen as a departure from the group's debut and was seen as a coming-of-age project which explored themes such as sexuality, romanticism, inexperience, and youthful optimism.
