    Sara Berman - In Conversation

    Sara Berman - In Conversation

Sara Berman describes her paintings as ‘a dialogue between painting and textiles'  and joins Juliet on the podcast to breakdown her works and the 'uncomfortable nooks of the female bodily experience' found in her self portraits.

Originally from London, Sara Berman studied at St. Martins School of Art & Design and later took a Masters of Fine Art at Slade School of Art. Her work can be found in notable international collections, and she has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibition, currently represented by Vielmetter in Los Angeles.

Sara describes her paintings as ‘a dialogue between painting and textiles.
With a background both in fashion and art, Sara brilliantly creates a game of  materiality in her large scale compositions in oil on canvas.

The conversation is very much based around the female experience and touches on every aspect of how Sara personally operates in the world and how this is represented in her work.  Her experiences are reflected through the character of the Trickster Whore and the use of the Harlequin as a starting point for all her paintings.

    Caroline Attan - In Conversation

    Caroline Attan - In Conversation

On this podcast episode Juliet is joined by British paper and written text artist Caroline Attan.   Her works are instantly intriguing and striking using organic visual representations in order to merge folded paper with poetry, paradox and metaphors. The concepts and compositions in her artworks collide as coloured, patterned and folded structures, together create a woven and textual narrative.

Her picture mainly consists of dense circular composition of folded shapes rotating along side, and above hand written poetry. Caroline frequently selects extracts from  Latin American poetry, which is where the cultural significance comes into play.  This is reflected in context and language the elements of the poetry are interpreted through colour, form and rhythm. Her works also utilizes literary extracts by authors such as James Joyce to inspire her compositions.

A series of works by Caroline Attan are currently included in the exhibition CLAY, INK, PAPER at the Nordic Art Agency gallery.  You can view all works online in the digital exhibition catalogue.

Jaclyn Sanders – community over competition

Jaclyn Sanders – community over competition

    Making time for art.
Jackie Sanders primarily works with abstract, geometric shapes, and bold colors using acrylic paint on panels. She creates visually interesting pieces that can be taken at surface value or can communicate deeper concepts and symbolism, allowing viewers to choose what they want to see in the art.
As a child, Jackie was supported and encouraged creatively by her family, who even helped her turn her bedroom closet into a mini studio.
She studied art at Virginia Tech, where she also took advantage of internship programs to learn outside of her subject. Post-graduation, Jackie experienced a dip in energy and confidence while attempting to navigate a competitive job market – fitting creativity in at the time was difficult, so her art took a back seat.
Having moved to North Carolina with no job offers and working multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet, Jackie eventually landed a full-time job at an awards company, which was enjoyable but demanding on her time and energy.
After a while something had to give. Jackie realized she needed to make space to allow creativity back into her life.
Find out how she did that in this episode.

Digesting Pop-Art: Warhol, Basquiat, Haring & Rothko

Digesting Pop-Art: Warhol, Basquiat, Haring & Rothko

    CHECK OUT THE VIDEOESSAY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3rGFoAMbKs&t=35s

What is Pop-Art? Why is it significant?

What is all the rage about Andy Warhol? What separates and connects the artists of the era? What differentiates the masters and the present day modern artists?

Musings and analysis from the Pop-Masters Exhibition of New York, featuring Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring.

    -

I once was not a Pop Art appreciator. This podcast was inspired by my experience at a Pop Art exhibit featuring works by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring. Seeing their paintings in the flesh made me reevaluate everything I thought I knew about Pop Art.

I went into this exhibition knowing relatively nothing about Pop Art. But during the exhibit, I found myself ignoring the descriptions about the art. For me, I got more out of just experiencing the paintings rather than reading the explanations of them. I believed that is how art is meant to be enjoyed: as an experience. I don't think art should require 'context' for it to be understood by the viewer. Art is, in itself, a mode of communication.

DISCLAIMER: This is just my personal experience and perspective on Pop Art and the Pop Artists. This is by no means fact. In this essay, I may be found to romanticise a lot about life and the ugly aspects of it. But I am not trying to delude or ignore ugliness, but find beauty in ugliness — because to me, that is the only way to survive. To find meaning and beauty in everything, even the meaningless and terrible, is not meant to disguise anything — it is to experience the full facets of life as a human. To accept everything as part of our intrinsic force here on earth.

*I am not speaking on the artist's personalities or personal lives.*

    Art referenced in this episode:

    Andy Warhol, 'Cross' (1981)
    Basquiat and Warhol, '
    Untitled' (1984)
    Basquiat,
    'New York, New York' (1981)
    Keith Haring, '
    Untitled' (1981)
    Mark Rothko, '
    Untitled, Red' (1961)

*NOTE: Mark Rothko was not part of the 'Pop-Art' movement, but the Abstract Expressionism movement. However, I wanted to talk about him anyway in regards to these topics.

Episode 9: Is Abstract Art Real Art?
