Amy Hanson My Son's Horrible Addiction Journey

Amy Hanson My Son's Horrible Addiction Journey

I am Amy, the mother of an 18 year old son who has struggled with SUD and MH challenges. He is still alive, but the road over the past 4 years is one  that will spin  heads. Every system has failed our family. I understand I cannot want my son to get help more than he does  and  I know  at this point I can let him know I love him and I can ultimately only save myself  from this ugly illness. I authored an article for the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota, identifying ways in which the systems failed a kid in desperate need of help. It all unraveled when my son was DM'ing with a friend who completed suicide that night. She was 13 years old  and my son turned to substances to not have to feel. Here we are 4 years later, overdose, jail time in GA, joke of probation in MN after breaking repeated laws and violating every rule of  probation and  treatment never ordered through the courts despite 4 letter from  professionals saying this would be the only solution. Son ran from 2 wilderness programs, we have spent over 200,000 to try to get help, reports to child protection, criminal lawyer, education attorney and we are  still stuck. I now intend to advocate for other families and share what I have learned.

Jen Zoe Hall Horse Powered Healing

Jen Zoe Hall Horse Powered Healing

From a small town in Southeast Missouri, Jen Zoë had always been fascinated with horses. Her career with horses, however, did not begin until the age of 30 when she started taking horseback riding lessons. She quickly realized that the traditional way of training horses was archaic - using negative tools to control these majestic animals that have so much to offer humans. So after some in depth research, she found a form of natural horsemanship that put the relationship between horse and human first. It was based on the foundation of all relationships - communication, rapport, respect and trust. She dove right into the deep end to understand everything about horses.

Overnight, outside of her horses, Jen’s life fell like a house of cards. She discovered her ex-husband was going to prison for theft and fraud, leaving her broke and homeless with horses,Despite what common sense and the world told her to do, she decided to attend a personal development seminar. At this event, she had a one on one intervention with Tony Robbins that completely shattered her old belief systems and allowed her to step into the woman she is today. This is where she realized that what Tony does with people, she does with horses. She saw a deeper connection and knew that the two worlds had to be brought together.

Over the past 19  years, Jen has tirelessly studied not just horses, but communication, human behavior, trust, relationships and personal development in order to create these life-changing experiences available at Zenerjen. The experiences Jen and her thousands of clients have experienced are not a fluke. Her brother, who was a former Naval officer and had passed away from a drug overdose, inspired her to deepen her work and serve those who had suffered from trauma, addiction and difficult relationships. Science has proven that horses not only directly reflect human emotions during an interaction, but can help to release mental and emotional traumas that hold us back from our true potential. They allow us to see ourselves in an egoless mirror for self-reflection and personal growth in all areas of our lives. Zenerjen horses, paired with the facilitation of our experts give participants unforgettable life changing experiences that foster confidence, leadership, healing and communication. Zenerjen believes that everyone deserves a positive, life-changing experience with a horse that maintains the dignity of the animal.

She now leads virtual and onsite programs using The Zenerjen Method of Equine Assisted Empowerment to help transform lives through the spirit of the horse. She works with people from all walks of life and all parts of the world, creating breakthroughs with her seminars, training, and retreats.

Jackie Siegel Losing a Daughter to Addiction Made My World Fall Apart

Jackie Siegel Losing a Daughter to Addiction Made My World Fall Apart

Jackie Siegel is best known for her role in the award-winning documentary feature, Queen of Versailles (Magnolia Pictures), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. A little back story: Jackie earned the "Queen" moniker when a decade ago, she and husband, David Siegel, began an extravagant project to build the largest private residence in the U.S.—named Versailles—and the ambitious construction ground to a halt as the '08 recession dented their fortune. The rise and fall of their grand ambitions were captured in the critically acclaimed 2012 documentary based on their plans for the 90,000-square-foot behemoth near Orlando, FL.

In 2016, the Siegel’s world changed forever when their then 18-year-daughter, Victoria, died of a drug overdose. This tragedy has trajected them into a new life purpose: to save lives through drug prevention programs. As a result, the Siegels have created a foundation in Victoria’s memory called Victoria’s Voice. Its purpose is to bring drug prevention education into the schools, offer healthy social media opportunities for young people, and assist first responders in receiving and administering Narcan (Naloxone) to an overdose victim, which has proven to save lives. When Victoria was discovered, she still had a heartbeat. It’s possible she could have been saved if the first responders had been equipped with Narcan.

In 2019, Siegel released a profoundly personal book, “Victoria’s Voice,” compiled from the pages of her late daughter’s journal. The Siegels decided to leave it just as Victoria had left it with drawings, poems, heartfelt feelings of loneliness and sadness. It is a very emotionally-charged read that all need to take heed of. It is a glimpse into the heart of a hurting teen that reveals to parents not uncommon struggles of their children. “If only one life can be saved through our efforts,” says Mrs. Siegel, “it will have been worth all of the time, effort, and money.” Later that year, Siegel also released The Princess of Versailles documentary on the fourth anniversary of Victoria’s passing. The documentary aimed to bring awareness of America’s opioid crisis to another level. In 2020, Siegel published a children's book “Oliver Uncollared” with her twin teen daughters to help kids cope with loss and grief.

Mrs. Siegel continues to schedule a full calendar as a model, actress, and philanthropist, but since Victoria’s loss, more priority is now given to Victoria’s Voice Foundation as she and her husband tirelessly work to bring local communities, state legislatures and even the federal government in agreement to do more about the opioid epidemic and its often tragic results.

The former Mrs. Florida America is also actively involved in the national Mrs. America organization and now many of the beauty queens have become outspoken advocates of Victoria’s Voice and saving lives.

Most recently, Siegel welcomed cameras back into her life and the Versailles mansion with the Discovery+ original series, Queen of Versailles Reigns Again, released in March 2022.

Alex Sirotkin - Author and Father - Lost his Daughter to an Overdose

Alex Sirotkin - Author and Father - Lost his Daughter to an Overdose

My wife and I live in Raleigh NC. I grew up sheltered in a wealthy suburb, Roslyn, on Long Island. Attended UPenn as an undergrad and BC Law 1980. I left the law after 8 years and went into business. My son, 35, is a MD/PhD practicing medicine in Boston. He and his wife have 2 little ones, a boy and girl, awesome grandkids. My daughter is expecting a boy in July. I had another daughter, Stephanie, who was troubled from the age of 3. Both of my daughters were adopted at birth, 3 days apart. Steph was eventually diagnosed as bipolar and at 17 became a heroin addict. Steph's mom and I had split up a few years prior to that. I became Stephanie's prime supporter for the next 9 years. I wrote my novel The Long Desert Road while Stephanie was excelling, had a good job, was sober and for the first time felt really good about herself. I had such high hopes, and my novel is uplifting. One of the book's 3 central characters, Lauren, was fashioned after my experiences with Stephanie. Steph even helped me with some of the young dialogue. I completed the novel sometime before the outbreak of Covid. Stephanie died of an overdose on Oct. 2, 2020, during the isolation of the pandemic. It was horribly surreal when my novel was released 3 months later in January 2021.
