    Updated MacOS And You-Know

    Updated MacOS And You-Know

In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about the difficulties I’ve run into after updating my MacOS. Fortunately, I’m learning VoiceOver and that has helped read all the pop-up boxes. I also talk of my extreme over-use of the phrase you-know and ask for help on how to break that habit.

    Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/164

    Updating To The Latest MacOS

I had been told that I was five operating systems behind. I finally decided to update the OS when I tried to load Adobe Audition on my iMac, but couldn’t due to the old OS.

    No iTunes In New MacOS

I knew that Apple was doing away with iTunes, but was still shocked when I went to add the ID3 Tags using iTunes and it was no where to be found on my computer. That was part of my workflow when creating a podcast episode since episode 001. Now I had to find another way. That caused a 24 hour delay in publishing episode 163.

    Would a Voice Coach Help

I have noticed since the fall that I say you-know frequently. Very frequently. It drives me crazy while editing an episode. I say it so often that it probably adds an hour to editing.

242: RFR Rewind: Austin Schroeder | How I Screwed Up My Interview At Clair Global

242: RFR Rewind: Austin Schroeder | How I Screwed Up My Interview At Clair Global

Austin Schroeder is a Monitor Engineer based out of San Diego, California, who is currently in rehearsals for the highly anticipated Rage Against the Machine tour.

An Iowa native, Austin started on piano at a young age, setting the groundwork for a deep and lifelong understanding and appreciation of music. His teenage years saw him develop more into a bassist, which he played in several jazz bands before ultimately ending up at Full Sail University, hoping for a degree in music recording.

After moving to Nashville to work at the famed Blackbird studios, Austin tired of studio life and decided that perhaps he was better suited to life on the road and the more spontaneous feel of live music. A misunderstanding during his interview process at Clair Bros led to an opportunity at a smaller Pennsylania-based company, Allusions Lighting and Sound Production. It was here, that Austin’s fate was set, and his career began to flourish.

Among the artists that he has worked with are Iggy Azaelia, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Tom Morello, and Lupe Fiasco. In 2019, Austin was awarded the Parnelli award for Monitor Mixer of the year.

Tana Douglas is widely acknowledged as rock’n’roll’s first female roadie. Her journey started in 1973 in Australia, where within a year she was working for AC/DC, first doing backline then F.O.H. Sound for the band. She then moved to lighting working for a Major Australian Promoter and completed in quick succession several tours with International acts such as: Santana, Suzi Quatro, Neil Diamond, David Essex and Leo Sayer and Status Quo all before she turned 18.

After getting her Father to sign her passport so she could travel Internationally she ventured to London to start 3 years with Status Quo running their lighting rig. She then brought that rig to TASCO a major Production company in London that until that time had only supplied Sound for tours. A relationship developed there that would last several years and include working for such artists as: Status Quo, The WHO, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, The Police, Elton John, Iggy Pop and Johnny Halliday the French mega star.

Her relationship continued with TASCO enabling her to transfer to the United States after they opened a Los Angeles division. After becoming a U.S. resident she broadened her working relationships to also include both Delicate Productions and Light & Sound Designs. The tours that followed were Elton John, INXS, and Men at Work, before being once again called back to Paris to manage the largest lighting rig ever built for a 7 month residency for her old friend Johnny Halliday, for Light & Sound Design (LSD).

After successfully completing that task it was time for a change. Los Angeles had offered Tana new passions and she gradually left lighting and stage/production to focus her skills on logistics for everyone including Lenny Kravitz, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Luther Vandross, Ice-T and Ice Cube to name a few.

As the music industry grew to become a worldwide cultural phenomenon, Tana was there, in the thick of it, a girl.

Tana and her unique position in the music industry have been included in several other people’s books – most recently a chapter in Stuart Coupe’s book, Roadies, which confirmed her as the first female roadie. But now it’s time for Tana to tell her story, in her own words. Her Memoir, LOUD, is being published through HarperCollins Australia and tells of the joys and struggles faced as a girl out on the road on her own in the wild and wooley days that created this industry of music. It is due to be released in April 2020.

Tana currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Launched by a small team of psychologists, researchers, and touring professionals who work closely with and care deeply about the well-being of touring personnel, they are committed to the development of scientific, evidence-based strategies to improve the health and mental health of touring artists and crew members.

The Tour Health Research Initiative is a comprehensive scientific study of health and mental health among touring professionals. In recent years, health and mental health issues in the music industry, and especially in the touring sector, have become a well-publicized topic. It has been addressed in panels at conferences, in industry magazine articles, and in countless blogs and posts on social media.

This survey is the first phase of the Tour Health Research Initiative. It’s an attempt to gather and analyze detailed information about the nuances of what impacts the health and mental health of touring professionals.

The survey has been IRB approved to ensure that all research is conducted in an ethically

Jessica Sanders is a Lighting Designer/Tech currently based in Nashville, TN.

Raised by music-loving parents in Macon, GA, and named after and Allman Brother’s song, Jessica and her family eventually settled in Houston where she ultimately got her start in the audio field.

A graduate of Media Technical Institute, Jessica started working as a stagehand upon graduating. With no fear of rigging or climbing structures, Jessica always seemed to find herself with the lighting department even though she was always wanting to go hang with the audio crew.

Before long, she worked her way up from being a lighting technician doing AV and one-offs for a few key companies in Florida and building a reputation there. After an opportunity to start doing more and more large one-offs, and smaller festivals, the work started coming as a touring technician.

Jessica spent most of 2019 with pop sensation BTS. Ever passionate about her career, she is creating an online resource for others looking to get some ongoing education or those just starting out.

Thank you all so much for joining me on this incredible journey!

TJ’s story originally started in the late 1980’s as a roadie for several New Jersey club bands. After a brief time at New Jersey’s legendary Trax East Recording studio, he spent most of the 1990’s and 2000’s crisscrossing the planet with bands like M.O.D, Agnostic Front, Ignite and many more. Along the way, he formalized his work with the creation Iron Sound Productions; a company providing back line, sound re-enforcement and tour logistics. By 2000, he was pulling triple duty as Tour Manager, Drum Tech and Guitar Tech for Skid Row, who was opening on the legendary KISS Farewell Tour (last tour with the original members of the band), and included a set by Ted Nugent. As the miles and years on the road continued to stack up, he further earned the respect and trust of peers in the industry.

Coming off his last tour, after spending over 20 years on the road, was a time of reflection for TJ; the realization that he was just a local kid from Jersey who had the honor to travel and share a stage with some of the biggest bands in the world. There were more than enough All Access stories to fill the pages of a book, but this wasn’t a story to just be seen through the interpreted imagination of a reader. Throughout all his travels, he had been compiling video footage of life on the road. There wasn’t a story to be written. It was a story that had to be seen. First hand.

Using his video archive as a basis, he starting from the ground up recording new footage. Talking directly to Roadies; helping his peers to open up to the camera, so he could capture the film in reality. In the life that it is lived, not just as it could be filmed. He knew the business first hand. He knew the life first hand. He had lived that life. His production would be at a level never infiltrated or presented. Without this bonding of a brotherhood he shared, this film and other related projects could never have happened. But they have.

Tiffany Hendren is a full-time FOH Engineer currently based out of St. Louis.

Performing and being in a band is what initially drove Tiffany into live music, but she realized that the combination of that passion and her interest in computers and engineering might just hold other options for her. After a few years in the military, she moved back to St. Louis and began searching for the right job in the industry.

The Pageant in St. Louis became Tiffany’s musical university. She learned every aspect including merch, production management, and ultimately, how to be an audio engineer. Throughout multiple nights of various acts she cut her teeth and eventually got her first touring gig with the band A Silent Film.

Multiple tours and many nights later, Tiffany has gone on to work with Alex Cameron, Betty Who, The Miracles, El Monstero: The Definitive Pink Floyd Tribute Experience, and more.

Finally, in 2015,Tiffany joined veteran Monitor Engineer Karrie Keyes as the co-director of Soundgirls.org, who’s mission is to inspire and empower young women and girls to enter the world of professional audio and music production while expanding opportunities for girls and women in these fields, and to share resources and knowledge through cooperation, collaboration, and diversity.
