Taika Waititi - Eagle vs Shark

Taika Waititi - Eagle vs Shark
Taika Waititi seems to be successful no matter what genre he explores. From vampires, and pirates, to superheroes, and droids, Waititi has a gift for evoking emotion when and where you least expect it, even when a young boy's imaginary friend is Hitler, as such is the case in his Oscar and Grammy award-winning film, "Jojo Rabbit".

It is his directorial debut, "Eagle vs Shark", however, that allows Taika Waititi to explore two of his most bizarre characters in what can only be described as the quirkiest love story that can be told about misfits finding common ground, in order to find out about themselves.

Colin Trevorrow - The Book of Henry

Colin Trevorrow - The Book of Henry
Colin Trevorrow is one of the most successful directors to take Hollywood by storm in the last ten years. From his debut film, the brilliant time travel comedy "Safety Not Guaranteed", to the massive box office success of Jurassic World, Trevorrow proves he can deliver the indie, the blockbuster, and everything in between.

In 2017, after foregoing the opportunity to direct the ninth entry in the Star Wars saga, he directed "The Book of Henry". What was initially preconceived as a dark comedy transformed into a beautiful story about a mother, her two sons, and the importance of never leaving things undone. It is both heartbreaking and warmly uplifting all at once.

Ang Lee - The Ice Storm

Ang Lee - The Ice Storm
From the beginning of his career, critically acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee has received accolades for his work. From Academy Award winner Sense and Sensibility, to the visually stunning Gemini Man, Lee has proven himself across genres; with two Oscar wins for his direction on Brokeback Mountain, and Life of Pi.
With his 1997 family drama, The Ice Storm, Ang Lee gives us a haunting observation of two families on the brink of tragedy during Thanksgiving weekend in Connecticut, 1973.

    1986 - Legal Eagles

    1986 - Legal Eagles
Our limited series, 1986, is back, and we're excited to be joined by Jason Colvin of the wildly popular Surely You Can't Be Serious podcast! Jason hits the courtroom with Jeff to discuss Ivan Reitman's rom-com crime thriller, Legal Eagles.
Robert Redford's likeability, fun cameos, Rod Stewart, casting could-have-beens, superhero connections, and one of the best answers to the Nintendo faceoff question we've heard yet are packed into this fun collaboration between the A Film By... and Surely You Can't Be Serious podcasts!

    1986 - Crossroads

    1986 - Crossroads
Ralph Macchio is trading in the dojo for the Mississippi Delta in Crossroads! He seeks out an elderly mentor to teach him about the blues, and Jeff seeks out Dayton Johnson of the Docking Bay 77 podcast and Scott Hoffman to talk about this "road movie without a road" on our limited series, 1986.
The boys talk blues, rock 'n roll, the necessity of Jamie Gertz, and an amazing theory that connects Thrashin', Crossroads, and The Lost Boys!

    1986 - Thrashin'

    1986 - Thrashin'
"What do you thrash?" "What do you got" We've got BMX and skateboard enthusiast Brad Stidham back again to discuss the skateboard classic "Thrashin'" for our limited series, 1986!
We're talking half pipes, hand plants, jousting, and Josh Brolin's thrashin' fashion sense, as well as the California skating scene in this loose remake of "West Side Story".

Sofia Coppola - The Virgin Suicides

Sofia Coppola - The Virgin Suicides
Sofia Coppola is the youngest child and only daughter of Francis Ford Coppola. Her films have a visual style that have been described as hazy and dream-like; filled with neglected characters that long to be acknowledged and seen.
Coppola has established herself from her father, from her Academy Award-winning writing in Lost in Translation to edgy historical efforts like Marie Antoinette. It is her directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides, however, that perhaps defined her fearlessness to examine dark and controversial subject matter.

    1986 - Rad

    1986 - Rad
Slip on your Vans and pour yourself a bowl of Kix, because we're back with another episode for our limited series, 1986! Jeff is joined by Alec and Cameron of the Comically Unaware Podcast, and special guest Brad Stidham, for a conversation about the BMX classic, Rad!
The guys reminisce about their first Mongoose BMX bikes, dating Lori Laughlin, an interesting "what if" idea involving Talia Shire, tubular ideas for a sequel, and the impossible odds of Helltrack!

    Amy Heckerling - Johnny Dangerously

    Amy Heckerling - Johnny Dangerously
Amy Heckerling's written and directorial efforts make her a comedic legend in Hollywood. She gave a voice to teenagers everywhere in separate decades with Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Clueless. She took the Griswold's to Europe, and made us think of Bruce Willis' voice every time we saw a baby. In 1984, she took on the gangster era of Hollywood with her parody film Johnny Dangerously.
A young Michael Keaton is joined by a bevy of 80's comedic talent as they spoof mob wars, dames, tommy guns, and the big house. Does crime pay? Well... it pays a little!

1986 - Little Shop of Horrors

1986 - Little Shop of Horrors
"Feed me, Seymour!" On this episode of our 1986 series, Scott Hoffman joins Jeff for a garden variety conversation about Little Shop of Horrors that is sure to knock your stalks off (two puns in the first sentence?)! Scott provides a rich history about the property, from stage to screen to remake! Connections to Batman, the puppetry of Martin P. Robinson, great options for the Nintendo faceoff, and music that makes you want to turnip the volume (okay, that was the last pun) are among the topics that bloom (okay, but really that was the last pun) on this episode!

And for more on Martin P. Robinson, check out the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry's "Little Shop of Horrors" forum at the following link https://www.facebook.com/BallardInstitute/videos/273676570307412/

    1986 - F/X

    1986 - F/X
Illusions, deceptions, and murder! Scott Hoffman joins Jeff on our 1986 series to talk about F/X! Comparisons to Fletch and The Fugitive? Another great "give me your gun and your badge" cop moment! All this, plus Tom Noonan and more!

    Steven Spielberg - 1941

    Steven Spielberg - 1941
Hot off the back-to-back blockbuster success of Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, rising star Steven Spielberg took a shot at comedy in 1979 with his WWII parody film, 1941. On the 80th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, Brad and Jeff discuss their love of Spielberg, their criticisms of 1941, and what's next for arguably the greatest director of all time.

    The '86 Breakdown!

    The '86 Breakdown!
We've done 25 episodes of our limited series on 1986 films! Our recurring guests always have great information, but how well do they REALLY know these movies? Jeff calls all they guys back for a special gathering to face off in a trivia contest for the ultimate prize. Who shall win? There can be only one!
