Breaking free from alcohol addiction, with Duncan Bhaskaran Brown

Breaking free from alcohol addiction, with Duncan Bhaskaran Brown

In this episode, I am joined by Duncan Bhaskaran Brown, coach, speaker, and Morris dancer, who helps people with alcohol dependency issues. He is also an author. His first book ‘Get Over Indulgence’ outlines a simple system to revolutionise your relationship with food, booze, and life. His new book ‘Real Men Quit’ is out in December.

Duncan shares his own experiences of battles with addiction, particularly, alcohol including what made him decide to stop and methods he used to lead a more rewarding life.

He explores how we live in a world full of illusions of truth, and there are many illusions of truth about alcohol if you look at the motivational triad we’re basically designed as humans to maximize pleasure, minimize pain, and minimize the expenditure of energy. And if you look at the delusions that are out there around alcohol, the world will tell you that alcohol increases your pleasure. It doesn't. It will tell you it reduces your pain. It doesn't. And it will tell you the best thing to do is sit on the sofa after a hard day's work and drink a glass of wine, which is, of course, minimizing energy expenditure.

He also discusses how to recognise if you or someone close to you is drinking too much, how to address the problem, and the support options available from self-help to cognitive therapy to Alcoholics Anonymous.

    What you starve, you kill.

We have Jonathan back in studio today discussing how addiction starves everyone and everything around you. Jonathan helps bring light to what others see and perceive of the addict and how to acknowledge and accept that viewpoint. Does the 'church' need to take a different approach to addicts??

Booze Free Bants with Buddies - Katherine Elliott; Boobs and Binge Drinking

Booze Free Bants with Buddies - Katherine Elliott; Boobs and Binge Drinking

When Katerine quit drinking she thought things in her life would have a positive shift, but 6 weeks after she quit, life threw Katherine a massive curve ball - of the cancer variety.

In this ep Kathrine chats to Breeza and Maso about her years of binge drinking before realising that she was role modelling this sort of drinking to her 3 young boys.  So after one horrific hangover (the story from the night before is a barry crocker) Katherine gave booze the flick, and then shit got real!

When Katherine was diagnosed with Breast Cancer she started researching the link between booze and cancer, and she was absolutely shocked with what she learnt.  So shocked, that she felt compelled to share her knowledge with others.   Katherine is The Alcohol Mindset Coach, and now helps people who want to change their relationship with booze.

This chat dives deep into Katherines binge drinking past, her 'why' of quitting, and where she is at now with breast cancer.  Buckle up for Katherines 'confession session'  story - the girls were in stitches over it, and gave her a couple of nicknames for her efforts on the Smirnoff!

Rob Bell on Doing What You Love

Rob Bell on Doing What You Love
How would your life look if you arranged it so you could do what you love? Rob Bell has one of the most pure, electric, inspiring and infectious energies for life. He’s truly engaged in the mystery and is such a model for doing things your own way. A former megachurch pastor, who is the New York Times bestselling author of “Love Wins” and ten other books has been encouraging us to engage in the joy of life for many years. In a time of “influencers,” cheap fixes, social media narcissism, hustle culture, self-improvement by meme, and increasingly shallow teachers, he’s a rare example of someone who walks the talk. He’s far more interested in remaining curious than appearing to have all the answers and we love that about him. Laura McKowen on 7 Years of Sobriety

Laura McKowen on 7 Years of Sobriety
This week, Laura takes the mic solo to reflect on hitting seven years of sobriety. She goes deep on four ideas that feel most important now as she looks back - ideas that are both urgent and grounding, timely and timeless - whether you’ve struggled with addiction or not. Since Laura got sober in 2014, cultural ideas and discussions around sobriety and addiction have massively changed. A “condition” once cloaked in anonymity and dark church basements has become both vocal and visible as more and more people choose to recover out loud, new recovery modalities surface, and movements like #sobercurious #oneyearnobeer #soberoctober and #dryjanuary have brought alcohol-free experiments and lifestyles into the mainstream, Amidst this shift, Laura encourages us to play the long game. She touches on the many layers of her sobriety from quitting Ambien to body issues, money, emotional sobriety, relationships with men, and finally quitting social media, and how the work of recovery is an ever-evolving, mysterious and life-giving process. ‘How I Knew I Needed to Quit Instagram’ (New York Times) https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/01/well/mind/instagram-quit.html Laura’s book: https://www.amazon.com/We-Are-Luckiest-Surprising-Magic/dp/160868654X/ The Luckiest Club: www.theluckiestclub.com Laura’s Website: www.lauramckowen.com Spotify playlist for this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/478iRwMKSjbPbLBaJQaHsy?si=845f0479f47c4342 Tell Me Something True is a 100% independent podcast.
