    Submarine & Stingray

    Submarine & Stingray

It's time for a deep dive – literally – as we plunge into the abyss on this aquatic edition of Bad Dads Film Review.

First up, let's submerge ourselves in the world of submarines! Over the years, there have been so many iconic submarines that have graced the big screen, haven't there? Remember The Nautilus from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"? A true marvel of underwater engineering! Then, of course, there's The Red October from "The Hunt for Red October" – Sean Connery's Russian accent and a game of underwater cat-and-mouse? Classic! And how can we forget U-96 from "Das Boot", giving us an unflinching look at life aboard a German U-boat during WWII. We also have The USS Alabama from "Crimson Tide", where Denzel and Gene Hackman go head-to-head in a battle of wills. And, to round off our list, there's the USS Dallas from "The Hunt for Red October" – a fine piece of American craftsmanship involved in the hunt for its Russian counterpart.

With our heads still submerged, our Movie of the Week is "Submarine". Richard Ayoade's directorial debut, this coming-of-age film is dry, witty, and beautifully shot. It’s not about submarines in the way you might think, but it's a deep dive into the complexities of adolescence, family dynamics, and the ever-challenging journey of growing up.

Then, for a trip down nostalgia lane, let's journey into the depths with "Stingray". It's a blast from the past for some of us! This marionette-filled adventure was a staple of kids' TV back in the day. "Anything can happen in the next half hour" was the promise, and boy, did it deliver! Aquatic adventures, villains, and of course, Marina, the mute mermaid. It might be a little cheesy by today's standards, but it's got a charm that's undeniable.

So whether you're all about the deep-sea adventures, navigating the tumultuous waters of teenage life, or just in the mood for some retro TV memories, we've got you covered. Make sure your periscope's up, and let's set sail on another episode of Bad Dads Film Review! 🌊🚢📺

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

    Until next time, we remain...

Episode 68: special guest Alex Turner (of Arctic Monkeys)

Episode 68: special guest Alex Turner (of Arctic Monkeys)
In this dear episode, dear Rob ended up in prison in London, so dear Kyle panicked, knowing full well he'd have to do an episode on his Toblerone. "I need a guest," he said with fear and nausea. "And I know just the guy". The guy is Alex Turner, lead singer and guitarist of one of England's biggest rock groups, Arctic Monkeys* Kyle sets the record straight about the cancellation of the gig in Marlay Park as well as the egotistical adventures of Alex and his friends who he renamed all Alex, including dear Kyle. Illegal? No. Immoral? I don't know. Tune in for this jam-packed episode. *not sure if it's actually him.

    Mini Mansions

    Mini Mansions

"Mini Mansions" are a three piece indie rock band from California, formed in 2010.

You could kind of consider them to be a mini supergroup, as the line-up features full-time members from "Queens of The Stone Age" as well as members from "The Last Shadow Puppets" and "Arctic Monkeys".

Over the course of three full length albums and a slew of EP's, "Mini Mansions" have explored a lo-fi rock sound that often times aligns itself more with a 60's pop orientated sound, with inspirations such as Pink Floyd and The Beatles.

Join us as we dive deeper into the sonic world of this underground band.

"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.

    Noah Cyrus

    Noah Cyrus

“For a woman to be singing ‘WAP’ you feel empowered. It makes you feel good as a woman, it makes you want to show off, it makes you feel sexy, it makes you feel empowered. And as a female artist that's all I would hope to do for my female fans. And they did that,” Grammy nominee Noah Cyrus says of her first protest song, 2020’s song of the year, “WAP.” Cyrus discusses that and so much more on this week’s People Have The Power podcast with Steve Baltin.

Kayla Phillips, Graphic Designer & Illustrator at Kayla Phillips Design - Episode 11

Kayla Phillips, Graphic Designer & Illustrator at Kayla Phillips Design - Episode 11

We're closing out 2020 with a fun one, LIVE (and distanced) from the comforts of Alex's three-seasons porch because Alex recently tore his patellar tendon (he shares the whole story at the start of the conversation).

For Episode 11, we're welcoming Kayla Phillips on to the show. If you've been following us on social media, you know that we've been partnering with Kayla on our recent #LoveWhereYouLivePeoria campaign, through which we raised $1000 to give directly back to local businesses and nonprofits.

Kayla is an incredibly talented graphic designer and illustrator. In this conversation, she shares about her entrepreneurial spirit that was first developed through a greeting card business at a young age, what brought her from Kansas City to Peoria, her unique journey after receiving a teaching degree to going into full-time design, why she doesn't think a hot dog is a sandwich, her special relationship with afternoon coffee, and some updates on a recent art mystery in our community.

Carl Cannon, Founder of ELITE Youth Outreach - Episode 6

For Episode 6, we had the incredible opportunity to sit down at the Riverplex with Carl Cannon, Founder of ELITE Youth Outreach. Earlier this year, Carl was featured on the Returning the Favor show (hosted by Mike Rowe) and we had so many people reach out asking us to get him on the podcast. So when he said yes, we were ecstatic!

Carl has such a huge heart for Peoria, and he has such a huge story to tell. We could barely touch the surface of who he is and all he's doing in the hour we had with him.

So in this episode, we talk about Carl's experience growing up in Peoria, his multiple deployments in the military (and his split-second decision that led to that career!), his career as a corrections officer, the work he does today to support local youth, how the people of Peoria should shift their perspective on the violence in the city, the book that's being written about his life, and a whole lot more.

We really enjoyed this conversation and hope you do as well!

Casey Baldovin, Owner of Baldovin Construction & Development - Episode 5

Today we're excited to share Episode 5 with Casey Baldovin, Founder of Baldovin Construction & Development! As you can tell in the episode, we had such a blast meeting Casey. (And we got to hang out with him for an hour afterwards, which was also fun!)

We covered all sorts of things (with a bunch of 2-part answers): the story behind his signature Sox hat, his vision for Peoria, how he’s been creating businesses since his lemonade stand when he was 7-years-old, his favorite projects that he's ever been a part of, how music connects people, and random things like chickens, elephants, tilapia, and dictatorships. Definitely worth the listen!

Chelsie Tamms, Owner of Lettering Works & Creator of 100 Days of Peoria - Episode 4

For Episode 4, we had the opportunity to connect with Chelsie Tamms, Owner of Lettering Works, a hand-lettering design company that was originally founded in Peoria in 2016, and the Creator of 100 Days of Peoria. We actually just saw some of her art when we were at Dream Center Peoria for Episode 2 of the podcast!

Chelsie has done some incredible projects throughout the area! We loved meeting her and learning more about the arts community in Peoria, the time she won $200 at a hula hoop contest, how a student entrepreneurship competition led to the development of her business, why 100 Days of Peoria got started, her favorite spots around Peoria, how she designed the mural at Bradley University, and a whole lot more.
