    Midweek Mention... Children of Men

    Midweek Mention... Children of Men

CHILDREN OF MEN (2006) is Director Alfonso Cuarón’s gloomy sci-fi masterpiece set 18 years after all women have suddenly and inexplicably become infertile. Whilst the rest of the planet is shaken by the death of the youngest person on Earth, Theo (Clive Owen) finds himself reluctantly drawn into escorting Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey) who might be carrying humanity’s last flicker of hope through an England divided by a refugee crisis and an austere authoritarian government. Gripping and grim in equal measure, Cuarón and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki conjure up a rich and textured world as a backdrop to a plot ripe with biblical allegory and commentary about our relationship to communities in crisis. Never less than captivating from the first frame until the bleak and barely optimistic ending and featuring several virtuoso sequences of incredible action film making, the verisimilitude of the world-building and its authenticity makes this one of my favourite movies of the noughties. As Cris puts it, if you haven’t seen it this you should rectify that immediately and if you have, you need to watch it again.

Ep 53 - Children Of Men

Ep 53 - Children Of Men

Children of Men is a 2006 science fiction action-thriller film[4][5][6][7] co-written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. The screenplay, based on P. D. James' 1992 novel The Children of Men, was credited to five writers, with Clive Owen making uncredited contributions. The film takes place in 2027, when two decades of human infertility have left society on the brink of collapse. Asylum seekers seek sanctuary in the United Kingdom, where they are subjected to detention and refoulement by the government. Owen plays civil servant Theo Faron, who must help refugee Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) escape the chaos. Children of Men also stars Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Pam Ferris, and Charlie Hunnam.

We’re on a trip to space with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in this month’s Film Board review of Cuarón & Son’s astro-tacular, Gravity. Join Steve Sarmento, Tommy Metz III, Andy Nelson, and Pete Wright as we pull apart a film miraculously greater than the sum of its pretty good parts. We pull apart the film, the performance(s), the writing, but most of all (spoiler) we lavish unheard of praise on Emmanuel Lubezki and the stunning digital filmmaking pouring from his hands. It’s a great conversation with some interesting twists, a whole lot of love, and just a bit of shame. Tune in!
