Climbing the Walls of Controversy: Sacred Space and Media Revision

Climbing the Walls of Controversy: Sacred Space and Media Revision

Can you imagine converting a historic church into a rock climbing gym? This week, we tackle the controversy surrounding the potential repurposing of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Toledo, Ohio. As plans emerge to transform the church, we question the suitability of one idea for the distressed neighborhood and explore possible alternatives.

We also touch on the deletion of a scene in the 1971 film The French Connection. What are the implications of the scene's removal, and how does it affect our perception of the characters played by Gene Hackman and Roy Schneider? Is this just a political issue?

Lastly, we discuss the anti-LGBTQ advocacy of the American College of Pediatricians and the introduction of the transgender ban on gender-affirming care in Ohio. The group colluded with another hate group to manufacture medical justification to harm LGBTQ+ people.

Jerry Bowyer: A Banner Session for the First Amendment

Jerry Bowyer: A Banner Session for the First Amendment

SCOTUS 2018 is shaping up as the “free speech” session of the court.

Masterpiece Cake ruling upheld the free speech rights of a cake decorator who did not want to decorate a cake celebrating a same-sex marriage.

The court sent a case back to a lower court involving a florist who did not want to create a floral display doing the same thing. Then there was the NIFLA decision—regarding the pro-life crisis pregnancy centers—where the court overturned a California law which compelled them to essentially advertise for abortion.

In Justice Kennedy's opinion, the law forced them to “convey a message contrary to their deepest convictions.”

Each one of these cases was litigated by the Alliance Defending Freedom, which has emerged as the most important First Amendment group in the nation.

It’s a banner session for the First Amendment.

Albert Mohler: California and the Future of Religious Liberty

Albert Mohler: California and the Future of Religious Liberty

The California Assembly has yet again adopted legislation that makes an undeniable infringement on religious liberty.  Assembly Bill 2943 would make it fraudulent and illegal to offer in any way to have anything to do with a change in sexual orientation, or for that matter, an individual’s sexual identity.

The Alliance Defending Freedom says, “the breadth of this censorship is staggering.” David French at National Review described it as, “extraordinarily radical.”

Part of the radical nature of this legislation is the fact that it now elevates sexual identity to something that is beyond question.  In other words, those who are pushing for the moral revolution, especially on LGBT issues, are setting out to eradicate, even by force of coercive law, anyone who would represent any worldview that would stand in their way.
