The First Great Awakening Part 5 - Uniting the Colonies

The First Great Awakening Part 5 - Uniting the Colonies

Through Whitefield's preaching, particularly through his "Father Abraham" sermon, God united the thirteen colonies. Despite division caused by geography and denominationalism, when the colonists were affected by revival, their divisions became inconsequential and they became aware that they were all equal before God and that they were a nation chosen by God for a specific purpose.

It's something so engrained in our culture it's something we could assume has always been around. Well you'd be partially correct in that assumption but the lottery as it exists today looked very different in ancient times and served a very different purpose. Where did it come from, how did it change from its ancient inception and how have people tried to cheat the system in order to hit it big? Tune in and find out.

Russell Shorto: From New Amsterdam to New York

Russell Shorto is an American historian, journalist and author. In 2004, he published The Island at the Center of the World: the Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America, for which he spent many hours in the New Netherland archives. Between 2008 and 2013, he lived in Amsterdam, where he was the director of the John Adams Institute.
