Through Whitefield's preaching, particularly through his "Father Abraham" sermon, God united the thirteen colonies. Despite division caused by geography and denominationalism, when the colonists were affected by revival, their divisions became inconsequential and they became aware that they were all equal before God and that they were a nation chosen by God for a specific purpose.

Russell Shorto is an American historian, journalist and author. In 2004, he published The Island at the Center of the World: the Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America, for which he spent many hours in the New Netherland archives. It's an eye-opening book, and a marvelous historical retelling of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam before it became New York. 

Between 2008 and 2013, he lived in Amsterdam, where he was the director of the John Adams Institute.

We discuss the American Fur Trade, one of the earliest and most important economic trades between Europe and the natives and colonies in the New World.  This trade resulted in multiple wars between native tribes, and constant rivalry between the French and English colonies.
