How to avoid burnout in medical education with Charlene Dewey, MD, MEd, MACP

How to avoid burnout in medical education with Charlene Dewey, MD, MEd, MACP
What career has the highest burnout rate? Burnout among physicians, residents and medical students is one of the most pressing problems in medicine. However, medical faculty are also showing signs of burnout. Joining to discuss the current state of educator well-being and what can be done to address it is Charlene Dewey, MD, MEd, MACP, director of the Center for Professional Health and chair of the Faculty Wellness Committee at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. AMA Recommending Uterine Transplants in Transgender Men

AMA Recommending Uterine Transplants in Transgender Men

The June issue of AMA’s “Journal of Ethics” offered a strong defense for transgender biological men to “consolidate their identities” with the ability to have children. Though the article states that there have been no documented successful transplants to date, the procedure is seen to be reasonable under their Hippocratic Oath. The article further postulates that government funds should be made available for these surgeries, since insurance companies may be slow to adopt coverage in this area, due to its cost, efficacy, and controversies. The AMA article ends with, “the case could be made that no moral obstacle stands in the way of justifying subsidies for UTx (uterine transplants) for some transwomen and transmen…”.

Perhaps some Christians have strong feelings on the subject of transgender surgery, in all its forms. Perhaps medical and financial resources could be utilized in other ways for the betterment of society and the furtherance of an eternal-based message. However, as Biblical Christians, we do not need to be looking for fights that distract from our testimony. We need to keep the main thing the main thing… Christ and Him crucified for our sins.

Matters of Heaven and Hell should take precedence over the earthly.

    111: Ob*sity

    111: Ob*sity

This episode is actually the second version of a rant I recorded based on a Facebook post I had a reaction to. I discovered I hadn’t had my mic turned on after recording the first version of the rant and despite feeling slightly better after voicing my feelings to all of you, I still felt compelled to share my thoughts. Which brings us to this version. The Facebook post in question was from a fellow physician who wrote that only 40% of Americans are considered obese. Her caption stating she learned the statistic during continuing medical education combined with my poor decision to read the comments got me very upset. It just reminded me again of how pervasive weight discrimination and fat shaming is in our culture, and also within medical culture. So I’m sharing my thoughts about it here.

The obesity referred to in the Facebook post was almost certainly defined using BMI because that’s how the medical world defines it. I’ve addressed all the problems with the BMI previously and even in June of this year the American Medical Association released a statement urging physicians to reconsider how they use BMI because of its history and racial implications involved with its use. So many things about the reference to obesity in the post got me riled up, and understanding the misuse of BMI is just part of it. It sparked a complicated reaction in me because I am a board-certified obesity medicine physician and though I don’t actively practice due to not believing in the interventions we’re taught to prescribe, until recently I was coaching weight loss. The unease I felt in responding to the post (I didn’t), and my offense at some of the comments inferring that people categorized as obese are disgusting, just combined into upset that led to this episode. So please join me as I break down again what is wrong with BMI, with the arbitrary categorization of obesity, with assuming weight indicates health, with not allowing for health at any size, and in examining my own personal feelings about my place in it all. I end with a promise to you, and myself, to strive for more courage in addressing these errant beliefs amongst my colleagues.

    About Dr. Michelle Tubman

Dr. Michelle Tubman is a physician and health coach. She helps women ditch dieting and thrive at any size. For the longest time she believed that weight loss was the answer to all her problems. But decades of yo-yo dieting and restriction left her miserable, unhealthy, and exhausted. Now she teaches women how harmful dieting can be and shows them the way to true health and wellness.

As a physician specializing in both emergency and obesity medicine, with additional training in nutrition, eating psychology, and coaching, Michelle can tell you with certainty that dieting is dangerous. Studies associate compromised health more with yo-yo dieting than higher body weight. Yet, everywhere you turn, shrinking your body is hailed as the solution. Women don't need to change. Attitudes do. So let's stop self-shaming, speak out against sizeism, and fiercely champion unconditional self-celebration!

Episode 142 | “The Greater Good”

Episode 142 | “The Greater Good”

Inspired by one of our favorite movies, where the plot revolves around one town’s cult-like obsession with “the greater good,” we discuss the pro-abortion side’s rationalizations for legalized abortion and their belief on how it supports “the greater good.”

Their "Greater Good" Arguments We Cover:

    • Greater Good for women’s health?
    • Greater Good for the economy?
    • Greater Good for the disabled?
    • Greater Good to solve “unwanted children”?

Dr. Albert Abrams and His Oscilloclast: Charlatan or Visionary

His medical contemporaries once considered him to be a "clever, money-mad neuropath." But what makes Dr. Albert Abrams a bit different than other charlatans we’ll meet this season is that though he was dismissed within the medical community for quackery in his time, he probably wasn’t a guy running a con – at least not on purpose.

Improving Medical Education at Scale - Dr. Sanjay Desai, Chief Academic Officer and Group Vice President of Medical Education at the American Medical Association
One of the most urgent issues Dr. Sanjay Desai sees in medical education is how to bring historically minoritized people into the physician workforce. “We need to have a physician workforce that resembles the patients that we care for,” he urges. In Dr. Desai's former role as program director of the prestigious Osler Medical Residency at Johns Hopkins University, he and his team more than doubled the number of minority recruits into their program. Tune in to this episode of Raise the Line with host Shiv Gaglani to learn about the data and research- based approach they took to achieve that aim, as well as improving student and resident well-being. Find out about Dr. Desai's route to medicine via consulting, and hear what he has seen change for the better in his time as a medical education leader. Plus, hear about the opportunity the current moment offers to use technology to personalize education, learn more about the American Medical Association's mission and impact, and discover why Dr. Desai thinks medical education needs to become more continuous.

A.D. Q&A with AMA CEO Jim Madara on how overturning Roe v. Wade could criminalize healthcare

A.D. Q&A with AMA CEO Jim Madara on how overturning Roe v. Wade could criminalize healthcare
When the U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion leaked suggesting Roe v Wade would be overturned this summer, immediate reaction came from the political sphere. What did President Biden say? Gubernatorial candidates? Pro- and anti-abortion groups? And what did this mean for Illinois as a so-called abortion access oasis? But reaction from the medical community trickled in slower. This episode presents a conversation A.D. Quig had with the CEO of the American Medical Association, Dr. James Madara, last Thursday. It was supposed to be a sit-down in front of AMA staff marking the organization’s 175th anniversary, but it came shortly after the draft opinion leaked. Dr. Madara was surprised about the leak and its contents, which would have major consequences for practicing doctors and patients alike. In a statement last week, the AMA said the ruling, as drafted, amounted to government interference in the patient-physician relationship, a dangerous intrusion into the practice of medicine, and the potential criminalization of care. There are Roe implications beyond abortion in the draft, Madara warned, including simple conversations between doctors and patients about whether there are handguns in the home. Madara discussed what the AMA plans to do if the decision does go through this summer. He also addressed the drop in trust in physicians following the covid pandemic; physician burnout and a looming doctor shortage; progress the AMA is making in its racial equity pledge; and whether the country has made as much progress as he thought it would following passage of the Affordable Care Act.

Michael Medved: The Biggest Threat to Our National Well-Being

Despite strong economic growth of recent years, an even more important number tells a much less encouraging story.

For three years in a row now, we’ve suffered an unprecedented decline in life expectancy—with self-inflicted harm striking more Americans in the prime of life. The lead author of a new study for the American Medical Association says, “the whole country is at a disadvantage compared to other wealthy nations.”

While people around the world enjoy steady increases in longevity, America has been moving in the wrong direction for the first time in a century.

Experts say prime causes are drug overdoses, suicides, and alcoholism—“deaths of despair” that inflict a horrible toll, despite declining rates of crime and poverty, and dramatic improvements in medical care.

Prospective leaders in an election year must confront this threat to our national well-being that prematurely steals spouses, parents, neighbors and work colleagues from those who need them.

Christy Ford Chapin on the Evolution of the American Health Care System

Christy Ford Chapin on the Evolution of the American Health Care System

Historian Christy Ford Chapin of University of Maryland Baltimore County and Johns Hopkins and author of Ensuring America's Health talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about her book--a history of how America's health care system came to be dominated by insurance companies or government agencies paying doctors per procedure. Chapin explains how this system emerged from efforts by the American Medical Association to stop various reform efforts over the decades. Chapin argues that different models might have emerged that would lead to a more effective health care system.
