316 - “Back in Illinois” by Nancy Hays & The Heffernans

316 - “Back in Illinois” by Nancy Hays & The Heffernans

Nancy Hays is a singer/songwriter originally from central Illinois, who has recorded five albums and made five tours of the UK with her original country music. Nancy also opened for country icons including Conway Twitty, Ronnie Milsap, Glen Campbell and many others. Nancy's maternal roots were rural farmers from the Midwest. Nancy's best friend growing up was one of nine children from a large farm family. Between performances on the road with her band, Nancy would visit her best friend, Connie Wise. Back in Illinois was written about her fond memories of times spent on the Wise farm and also her thoughts of home, especially when far away. Many years later, three of Nancy's four children began performing with her under the name Nancy Hays & The Heffernans (Nancy's husband is Sean Heffernan). Nancy's other son, Eddie, creates the family music videos. Nancy decided to record Back in Illinois, with her extended family. Matthew plays fiddle and sings harmony and daughters Mary and Caroline provide harmony vocals. The song made its radio debut on iHeart Radio in 2019. It is produced by Nashville based producer, Randy Gardner.

303 - “Touring a Nuclear Reactor” by Donald Beagle

303 - “Touring a Nuclear Reactor” by Donald Beagle

    Written by Donald Beagle.

    Read by Jenny Curtis.

Donald Beagle is a 66 year old poet, and for the past 20 years, a professor and Library Director at Belmont Abbey College near Charlotte NC. “Poetry, to me,” comments Donald, “remains the most challenging of literary endeavors, because of its immediacy in the present moment, paired with its sense of timelessness. I grew up in a place so rural that my formal education began in one of the last one-room schools in Michigan, with 35 students, grades one through six. It ended with my graduate degree at the University of Michigan, then with 35,000 students. Between those extremes were studies at the California Institute of the Arts, followed by my BA at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. I learned from wonderful mentors and teachers; such as a course with linguists Noam Chomsky, Morris Halle, and Samuel Jay Keyser, where I learned metrical theory based on their book, The Sound Pattern of English. And I’ve been fortunate to win some awards along the way, including the Major Hopwood Award for Graduate Poetry at the University of Michigan, and 40 years later, the Gail O’Day Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry from Wake Forest University."

Donald Beagle’s poem “Touring a Nuclear Reactor” appeared in the 2019 anthology, The Hopwood Poets Revisited: Eighteen Major Award Winners.

“This poem grew from a real life experience in my teens,” comments Donald, “when my father was invited to tour a newly built reactor in southern Michigan, and I came along. Back then, this was advanced technology that some people found inspiring while others were fearful. My poem explores these polarities; the line of tourists becomes a sort of pilgrimage through a holy yet mysterious place, “tall as a cathedral,” where humanity assumes almost godlike power; tampering with matter to unleash awesome energy. At the same time, a metaphysical fear also lurks under the poem’s narrative, from the threat of terrorism to the cooling tower shaped like an hourglass, as if counting down the hours until some unforeseen disaster.”

302 - “The Butterfly” by Pari Meg

Pari Meg is a strong girl trying to inspire others. From the horrid experiences she went through nothing could stop her. Nothing can hurt her. She is a college student trying to make it big and make a name for herself. Whether it’s through film or art, she wants to be remembered. And she wants to help others any way she can. She is based in California.

    A Statement from Pari:

"When I was ten years old, I spent a lot of my time in the hospital. Thinking in my head, I wish I could just die. My right hand doesn’t work, my speech is gone. What’s the point. Because of the tragic experience, I now have PTSD, depression, and anxiety. And it’s still hard to this day. I try to go one day at a time and try not to over think. I have good days. I have bad days. But I never give up. My own father tried to commit suicide and after that experience there’s no way I would do anything like that. Life is hard, but never give up. I recently lost all of my money in my bank account and I’m really stressed out. But I’m trying to go one day at a time.

I created this piece to show others to never lose hope. It will get better. And I’ll always be there if anyone wants to talk.

I have been through a lot in my life. The hospital, losing my home, my father, just all the bad luck. I will stop nothing to never give up. I want to inspire everyone. I don’t want to worry about anything in my life, whether it’s financials or pain. I want people to know my name. Yes, not everyone is going to love me and that’s okay. If I can help at least one person and make them laugh, I know I’ve done my job."

    A Statement from Flannery:

"I wrote this piece in May of 2020—at the start of the pandemic. As I mention in the piece, my therapist at the time suggested that I write a letter to myself. I suffer from depression, so I tend to see things in black and white. In this piece, I’m giving myself a pep talk. I’m telling myself that I have the capacity to change and move away from destructive, self-sabotaging behavior. I published this piece to help other people who suffer from depression see things from a different perspective. In general, I like to shed light on mental illness in the hopes that the subject will become less taboo in our society."

    A Statement from Mary:

"My poem has been cooking for decades since our visit to the opera. It was a life changer in my relationship with my father and I will never forget that moment. I finally wrote this poem because I share my birthday with him. I was reminiscing about his life and how I have out lived him by 15 years. Grateful for more time to win victories and dedicate them to his life."
