Mark Jenkin
Lost and Sound is back after a seasonal break, and trying something new: Paul’s first guest of the year is actually a film maker. Isn’t this a music podcast? You might say, but Mark Jenkin’s hands-on approach and unique style, particularly when it comes to sound design, make him, for a podcast that meets outliers, innovators and outsiders, a spot on guest.
Following on from his 2019 black and white Cornish-set Bait: a film nodody could have predicted would have become the hit it was, we spoke about his new offering, the 70s-set folk horror, Enys Men. It’s hauntology on screen: eerie and dream-like. The soundtrack, composed by Jenkin, is stand-alone good - particularly if you’re a fan of disintegrating drones and analogue loops that feel warped into some lost memory.
Mark Jenkin’s original score for Enys Men is out now digitally on Invada Records. The film is released in the UK on 13 Jan.
This episode is sponsored by Audio-Technica
Paul’s debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. Click here to find out more.

Trusting Your Senses - Doc Kaps and His Impossible Project To Save Polaroid
“I don’t want to keep dinosaurs alive. I want to inspire young people to combine old technologies with new technologies. If you stop understanding the past you will not find the answers for the future. And this is the big problem with digital.”
Florian Doc Kaps: is a champion of all things analogue, an out of the box thinker who believes that people are too swamped with digital things in our lives. He believes that we should on our five senses to make decisions about business, love, family and friends.
Former biologist who was a foremost authority on spider eye movement (I didn’t know that was a thing until I met Doc), he is also the entrepreneur who literally saved Polaroid instant photography from extinction.
Do you know those big, instant cameras that make a loud click when you take a snapshot? It spits out an undeveloped photograph into your hand? Doc saved that.
In 2008 the company that owned that instant film, Polaroid, was planning to shut down the last factory where it was made. Boom. The End. No more Polaroid. The end of instant photography as we knew it.
Then along came Doc. He literally bought the Polaroid factory before they shut it down forever. He calls his arduous journey An Impossible Project They made a film about it, too. If you own one of those vintage cameras or see an instant photo on a refrigerator you can thank Doc.
My Tools For Nomads episode with Doc Kaps explores how he saved Polaroid from extinction. We went deep into the mind of Doc and talked about the importance of analogue in our lives, about the lost art of daydreaming, his experience-store called Supersense, and what it was like growing up in Vienna, birthplace of Mozart, Beethoven and Freud.
You’ll love Doc Kaps just as I do.
Listen and be inspired!
Press Play - The Podcast from Reel Resilience - Ep 21: Talking About the PR99, A700 & The B67
Part 2 of my conversion with Rob Brinkworth. In Episode 20 we talked about Rob's collection of Revox A77 and B77 machines and we carried on talking about the other recorders in his collection too, so I thought it would be a shame not to hear it.
One of the models we spoke about was the successor to the B77, Studers attempt to bridge the gap between their consumer, Revox badge products and the professional Studer line-up, the Revox PR99.
Then we got onto the "fun" of owning a Revox A700 and comparing it to its Studer brother, the B67. Listen on!
OK Boomer - You're OK!
Cora is 18 and she's realized that Boomers are OK. Why? Because if the Earth is ever hit by a massive solar flare all digital devices will be rendered useless, the Internet won't work, and even power grids will go down. It happened in 1859 when the telegraph sparked and burned out during The Carrington Event caused by a massive solar storm which engulfed our planet in a geomagnetic apocalypse. Luckily, not many people were connected to electricity or used the telegraph. But our world is TOTALLY digital and connected. That's when analogue and mechanical devices will come back into their own - and who knows how to use them? Boomers!

Slowing Down & Looking Out With Tatenda Chidora
Instantly recognisable, the work of photographer Tatenda Chidora speaks volumes to his practice and the connections forged by capturing a piece of his subjects essence.
Now, Tatenda joins us in conversation and allows us to pull aside the curtain and gain a deeper understanding of his process, the importance of minimalism in the sharing of authentic stories and how lockdown in South Africa has had some unexpectedly positive results.

You know you're a boomer when you get nostalgic for old tech
Our creative writing department has unearthed the writings of a local boomer to reveal that analogue technology is what Boomers really get nostalgic about. If you're from that generation does the sound of a cassette tape unlock deep, distant memories? Or perhaps the sleekness of a CD? Or using a phone box? Go back in time to the cosy memories of slipping coins into a slot in a cramped, smelly box. Lovely.
The only university that makes you chuckle AND learn at the same time.
Should we live like vinyl and re-engage with the analogue?
The re-emergence of vinyl records is more than a passing phase or a niche interest for nerdy music buffs or hipsters. It's a movement to reclaim the essence of life - human life is analogue! Digital is cold empiricism. The basis, perhaps, of the neoliberal project to turn us all into drones. Our head of music. Dave Dave David believes we need to turn on, tune in, and do more than move the needle to the first track... we have to live like vinyl. In the end, life is a pressing that we only play once, so make the most of it!

Audio Issues
I'm still working out how to get the best audio, and with our setups changing frequently, this is unfortunately the trade off when we record weekly. I could spend more time troubleshooting and testing, but we couldn't release so often! Rest assured after this episode I will be making a checklist and working to that each week to try and finesse any further auditory irregularities. Thanks for your patience.

Suzi Analogue on Missy Elliott's "Da Real World"
Artist and producer Suzi Analogue originally hails from Missy Elliott's native state of Virginia though these days, she's rooted in Los Angeles, having come up within the city's beat scene. Suzi wanted to talk about what she described as the "underdog" album, Missy's enormously successful yet somewhat forgotten sophomore album, Da Real World, one in a string of five back-to-back platinum LPs for Missy and her production partner, Timbaland. We talked about Missy's creative genius and what that meant for a young girl, growing up in VA.
