#303 Embracing Identity: Judah Merez Journey as a Trans Woman

#303 Embracing Identity: Judah Merez Journey as a Trans Woman

We had the pleasure of meeting Judah Merez,  in her home on a tranquil suburban street in Los Cruces during the Labor Day weekend. The vibe of the Southwest desert landscapes and the comfortable homes added a unique flavor to our conversation.

Judah welcomed us at her kitchen table, ready to embark on her journey with The Jar. Born in 1996 in San Antonio, she grew up in a bustling household with nine siblings. Here's where things get intriguing: her father was a general in the Hebrew Israelite Nation, which at one point was investigated by the FBI as a black militant organization. Judah describes it as a misogynistic cult, adding complexity to her early life.

Life at home was further complicated as her father was a polygamist. The family eventually left San Antonio when she was four, distancing themselves from the organization, and settled in New Mexico. Albuquerque became her home until she turned 27.

Judah paints a picture of challenging times during her childhood. Her father ruled with corporal punishment, instilling fear in her and her siblings. Her mother often stayed at work to avoid her father, leaving the kids exposed to violence in various forms.

Interestingly, music became a bond between Judha and her father, particularly his music. She was drawn to hip-hop, appreciating the power of language as a weapon through lyrics. This led her to make her recording debut at the age of 21, with her music now available on various platforms. Around the same time, she found herself returning to her childhood home to live once again.

Today, some years later, Judah Merez stands as a confident young individual, living with her partner and pursuing her dreams. She's a trans woman, a music artist, and a person in the process of self-discovery.

Join us as we dive into Judah Merez's story, filled with unique experiences, challenges, and a vibrant spirit that shines through her music and her journey of self-expression.

#302 Family Bonds: Nathaniel's Relationship with His Father-in-Law with Nathaniel Roth

#302 Family Bonds: Nathaniel's Relationship with His Father-in-Law with Nathaniel Roth

We had the pleasure of meeting Nathaniel Roth in his charming home nestled in a suburban-style neighborhood with Pueblo-style homes and rock gardens. Settling into his front living room on a cozy couch, we were joined by one of his furry companions who made a few adorable appearances during our conversation.

Nathaniel, originally from Indiana, moved to Cincinnati when he was around eight years old and spent a significant part of his life there until the age of 18. He's been living in Las Cruces for two years, pursuing his PhD in social psychology. Growing up with his younger brother, Logan, Nathaniel's family adhered to Protestant Christianity for three generations. However, he always found himself conflicted between faith and rules, church doctrine, and human-made regulations. When his parents stopped attending church and left the choice to him, he too chose to discontinue formal church attendance. This decision was significant, as Nathaniel had been deeply involved in church life as a young person, including leading a band and studying the Bible.

Nathaniel shared one of his favorite quotes, "To understand all is to forgive all," which reflects his wisdom at a relatively young age. He understands the power of empathy and forgiveness in understanding and connecting with people.

Our conversation delved into Nathaniel's relationship with his father-in-law, highlighting his wish for a stronger bond and his and his wife's efforts to express their boundaries while hoping for a more fatherly connection in the future.

Teaching holds a special place in Nathaniel's heart, and he expressed his joy in interacting with students and the sense of purpose it brings. This discussion also led us to explore the weight of expectations, both from others and himself, and how this has influenced his journey.

Join Nathaniel and The Jar for a candid conversation with a person who is navigating the complexities of life, including his close relationships and his commitment to teaching.

#301 The 'Secret Sauce': How I Turned My Unique Qualities into Strengths with Patrick Alexander

#301 The 'Secret Sauce': How I Turned My Unique Qualities into Strengths with Patrick Alexander

We had the pleasure of meeting Patrick Alexander in his Las Cruces, New Mexico home, just a short three-hour drive from Albuquerque. After a quick setup, we settled into his living room, with Patrick taking a comfortable spot on the couch, and The Jar positioned between us.

Patrick hails from Southern Indiana, a small-town kid who grew up in a household shaped by divorce. Raised by his father alongside his brother, Patrick describes himself as that "smart but weird" kid. From a young age, he displayed a profound interest in biodiversity, encompassing everything from plants to animals. Until the age of seven, life seemed to be in a good place for Patrick.

However, as he transitioned into middle school and high school, social challenges emerged. Patrick endured relentless teasing, and it wasn't until the final two years of high school that he found relief. He transferred to what he calls the "hippie school," where he moved in with his mom on the Indiana University campus. Here, his life took a more positive turn, and his love for biology blossomed.

Patrick continued his educational journey, pursuing graduate school in New Mexico, where he completed his doctorate in environmental science. He delved into data analysis related to biodiversity, essentially living the dream he'd envisioned.

More recently, Patrick underwent a significant diagnosis: autism. This revelation began to explain many aspects of his life, from social challenges to his internal struggles with authenticity. He shared his journey of learning to be comfortable with who he is, embracing self-love, and looking in the mirror to say, "I love you," or, as we joked, "I like you."

Our conversation with Patrick takes us through his life journey as he navigates self-discovery and integration, ultimately turning his unique qualities into his "secret sauce." Join us, Patrick, and The Jar for a candid conversation about real life and real people.

#300 Unschooling Explained: Empowering Children to Design Their Education with Kristen Himm

#300 Unschooling Explained: Empowering Children to Design Their Education with Kristen Himm

We had the pleasure of meeting Kristen Himm at her business, ABQ Homeschool Connection, in Albuquerque. Her facility serves as a hub for homeschoolers, providing support and engaging learning activities. Kristen's journey starts in Upper Pennsylvania, where her father relocated the family to the Jersey shore to pursue a career in contracting. Her parents split when she was about 13, initially navigating co-parenting, but her mom decided to move when Kristen was 15. Kristen made the pivotal decision to join her mother, a choice that would prove beneficial as she thrived in her new environment.

Kristen recalls feeling a calling to teaching at the young age of 14. She had a remarkable teacher who was unorthodox in the system but deeply inspired his students by fostering independent thinking. Unfortunately, he was eventually fired for his approach, and Kristen, along with her classmates, understood the injustice behind it. This experience left a lasting impact, shaping her future choices.

As Kristen pursued her teaching career, she encountered recurring instances of injustice within academia, leading her to question the education system's integrity. Eventually, she decided to step away from administrative roles in education and embarked on a new mission: teaching parents how to "unschool" their children. Kristen is a strong advocate of the unschooling movement, which empowers children to design their own education based on their interests.

Kristen's journey has been filled with pivotal moments, all of which have prepared her for her current role in helping families navigate alternative education pathways. Join us and The Jar as we delve into Kristen's remarkable journey.

#299 Underlying Issues & Healing: Depression, ADHD, Autism, and CPTSD with HaiYang DeGiglio

#299 Underlying Issues & Healing: Depression, ADHD, Autism, and CPTSD with HaiYang DeGiglio

We had the pleasure of meeting HaiYang de Giglio in her new home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on a Friday afternoon just before Labor Day. The weekend ahead promised a lot of unboxing and settling into her new space.

HaiYang hails from Detroit, where she grew up with a Korean mother and a black military father. Her multicultural background has given her a unique and rich perspective on life. Later in life, she married a Filipino Italian, adding even more diversity to her personal tapestry.

Her high school years were marked by chaos at home, and amidst this turmoil, HaiYang found solace in the form of structure and control in her life. She discovered her place in the world of show choir, where she could define who she was and what role she played. It became her great escape, offering opportunities to compete and shine. However, one form of escapism often leads to another, and she found herself drawn into the party scene, where drugs and alcohol started to take a toll on her life.

Yet, HaiYang was determined to regain control. She embarked on a journey of self-improvement, which led her to overcome her struggles with addiction. She got married and began a career as a paralegal, which progressively grew more successful. However, this newfound success brought its own set of challenges, as it exacerbated underlying issues such as depression, ADHD, autism, and CPTSD.

Amidst these difficulties, HaiYang and her husband decided to make a fresh start and relocated to Albuquerque from Tampa. The move was meant to offer them a new beginning, but it also brought its own share of challenges, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. HaiYang acknowledges that she's a different person now and that finding alignment with her husband is an ongoing challenge they are committed to tackling together.

Join us as we listen to HaiYang's story, shared through The Jar, and gain insights into her journey of self-discovery, growth, and resilience.

#298 Certified Posture Therapy Instructor: Jon Clark's Remarkable Transformation

#298 Certified Posture Therapy Instructor: Jon Clark's Remarkable Transformation

We had the privilege of meeting Jon Clark on a picturesque Wednesday in Albuquerque, where he resides against the backdrop of a golf course. Interestingly, Jon's roots trace back to a small New Mexico town that famously changed its name through a game show contest, leading to its transformation into Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. His father managed a restaurant, and the family eventually moved to Albuquerque, where his father delved into the world of technology by opening a small computer store that sold a revolutionary new product called Apple computers.

Jon's journey continued as he graduated in 2008 with a degree in industrial engineering. He had an older sister who raised three kids, and though his family initially adhered to the Catholic faith, it gradually faded away from their lives.

At the age of 17, Jon experienced a skiing accident that left him with a spinal injury. Over time, the injury escalated, bringing along excruciating pain. Despite the agony, he persisted through life – education, work, even moving to Seattle. Eventually, however, the pain became overwhelming, and he found himself back at his parents' home on Christmas morning, unable to bear the burden alone.

The unwavering support of his parents was a cornerstone for Jon during these tough times. They sold their home to secure a more accessible ranch-style house where Jon could navigate more easily. It was during this period that his father introduced him to a book titled "Pain-Free Posture Handbook," a gesture that initially triggered Jon's skepticism about a pain-free life.

In a serendipitous turn of events, Jon's life intersected with psilocybin. While searching for a used CPAP machine on Facebook Marketplace, a man shared his own problems with Jon and sent him home with some mushrooms to try. Intrigued and unfamiliar, Jon sampled a small dose and felt a reduction in his bodily spasms.

Encouraged by this, he embarked on a more substantial psilocybin experience, aided by his newfound understanding of the book on posture therapy. He visualized the human structure and incorporated exercises from the book, ultimately creating a healing sequence tailored to his needs.

Now a certified posture therapy instructor, Jon has defied the odds. He's emerged from his wheelchair, discarded his crutches, and embraced an active lifestyle that includes golfing and frisbee golf. His remarkable journey showcases the power of visualization and determination. Join us in The Jar as Jon shares this inspiring chapter of his life.

#297 The Artist Factory: Fostering Creativity and Collaboration in Albuquerque with Carlos Contreras

#297 The Artist Factory: Fostering Creativity and Collaboration in Albuquerque with Carlos Contreras

We have the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Carlos Contreras, in his captivating and innovative shared artist space, a unique initiative he's spearheading called the "Artist Factory." This concept represents the first of its kind in Albuquerque—a gathering place for various artists and service providers to collaborate under one roof, creating a dynamic and supportive creative community.

During our conversation, Carlos passionately discusses the idea of nested businesses and the potential of bringing together artists and creators to contribute to their local community. His vision shines through as he envisions a space where these talents can flourish with the right support and investment.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Carlos grew up in a traditional Catholic family, shaped by the influence of his marine father and the challenges posed by his mother's mental health issues. Despite the tough love atmosphere at home, Carlos found solace and expression in the arts. His journey began as a slam poet performer, a culture he embraced and excelled in, which helped him carve out his identity.

As life unfolded, Carlos transitioned into marriage and fatherhood, only to find himself divorced and returning home to Albuquerque. Here, he embarked on a new artistic path, exploring painting on large canvases. A defining moment emerged when his young daughter expressed interest in painting on his artwork. Carlos's decision to embrace her creativity inspired him to venture into abstract art, fundamentally altering his creative trajectory.

Join us as we delve into Carlos's story, discovering the evolution of his artistic expression, his resilience, and the unique community-building endeavor he's embarked upon with the Artist Factory. The Jar provides a platform for him to share his experiences, insights, and aspirations with us all.

His apartment resonated with the atmosphere of his endeavors, including a makeshift recording area for his audio books—a testament to his dedication.

John's upbringing was colored by his adopted mother's determination to pursue her passion for singing, performing wherever she could, even in churches and prisons. At 24, a significant turn of events occurred when his birth mother reached out to him on Facebook. Their meeting, along with the discovery of a sibling, proved overwhelming for a young man processing the complexities of these new relationships.

As we delve deeper into John's narrative, we uncover his writing journey, which began as early as fourth grade and has since flourished into a complex and vast ecosystem of creative expression. John's adult audio work is a testament to his dedication to curating and sharing this expansive literary world.

Despite his artistic inclinations, John also engaged in sports during his high school years. A recurring theme in many of our guests' stories—the profound influence of grandparents—shines through. For John, his grandma Lona stood as a guiding force, grounding him throughout his life journey.

John generously shares his writing process, reflecting on the lessons he's learned along the way: the significance of carving out dedicated writing time, the importance of pursuing one's bliss, the reminder not to become a mere chapter in someone else's story, and the recognition that life is an ongoing draft, allowing us to learn from our mistakes.

In this installment of The Jar, we join John as he opens up about his life experiences, weaving together tales of family dynamics, personal growth, and the power of creative expression.

#295 Rehab and Beyond: Discovering the True Challenge - Codependency with Kelley Koehler

#295 Rehab and Beyond: Discovering the True Challenge - Codependency with Kelley Koehler

We had the pleasure of meeting Kelley Koehler at her massage studio – a space that resonates with intention, warmth, and mindfulness. As she welcomed us, it was clear that Kelley has undergone a remarkable transformation. She radiates a sense of self-love and maturity that contrasts vividly with the person she was not too long ago.

Kelley's roots trace back to suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her father's occupation as a racecar driver and her mother's self-absorption marked her upbringing. The divorce of her parents during her third-grade year led to a series of moves orchestrated by her mother's quest for work opportunities. From Arkansas to Wisconsin, the family navigated small towns as her mother hustled for a better life.

The shift from her Wisconsin small town to the bustling urban environment of Houston during her teenage years was a jarring experience. Kelley, who had been accustomed to being the center of attention in her small-town schools, suddenly found herself a small fish in a much larger pond. Coping with this culture shock and the ensuing struggle to fit in, Kelley turned to alcohol, drugs, and other means of self-soothing.

However, her life took a different direction. She left home at 17, and by the time she turned 18, she was in rehab. Surprisingly, her challenges weren't centered around drugs or alcohol; instead, she realized that her core issue was codependency and the need to learn how to navigate life independently from the influence of her narcissistic mother.

Kelley's journey included six marriages and six children. The cumulative experiences brought her to a moment of profound self-discovery. Now, in this beautiful chapter of her life, she has embraced self-love and has surrendered to her own identity. She has learned to stand strong in her individuality and no longer seeks someone or something external to complete her.

Join us as we bear witness to Kelley's inspiring transformation, a narrative that unfolds with each step she takes through The Jar.

#294 Loss, Longing, and Love: My Journey from New York to the Grand Canyon with David Andrew

#294 Loss, Longing, and Love: My Journey from New York to the Grand Canyon with David Andrew

We had the privilege of meeting our next guest, David Andrew, on a Thursday afternoon in Santa Fe. His apartment, located just off the main drag, still carried the sense of a recent transition. As we parked the van and began unloading our gear, the door to his apartment swung open, and there stood David, shirtless, waving us in with a casual declaration that he had just woken up. After getting settled, we took a moment to chat and even shared a morning cigarette.

David hails from northern New York, a child of the countryside, born in '66. His early years were marked by the loss of his father, an MD, when he was just three. He recalls those formative memories – the juxtaposition of his father's death and his birthday – and the long darkness that followed. His mother eventually remarried, introducing a stepfather into David's life. Like many of us, David endured the routine of high school and college, a job in a tie that felt like his personal version of hell. The turning point came when he abandoned that life and headed west. His first job, washing dishes at the Grand Canyon resort, brought a sense of freedom that he hadn't experienced before.

It was during his time at the Grand Canyon that David experienced his first taste of love – a love that was transient and left him feeling like he had fallen into a pit. As this chapter of his life came to a close, he made his way to Lubbock, Texas, where he spent over two decades building a life. He became deeply involved in the community theater scene, and those years shaped his identity, at least until he grew disillusioned with his job and the path he had been on. This pivotal moment in Lubbock marked the beginning of David's journey to Santa Fe, where he hoped to discover his next steps.

David is a profoundly intriguing individual, and his complexity invites compassion. His interview is raw and unfiltered, peppered with strong language and directness – a genuine conversation with a real person. In 2005, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a factor that has influenced his life's trajectory. During our conversation, David shares a heartfelt plea to his daughter, asking for forgiveness for not being the best parent while grappling with his mental health struggles.

Join us as we listen to David's story in his own words, a narrative that navigates through his highs and lows, triumphs and challenges, as he continues to forge his path within the pages of The Jar.

#293 The Weight of Emotions: Unpacking Loss Along the Running Path with Anthony Kunkel

#293 The Weight of Emotions: Unpacking Loss Along the Running Path with Anthony Kunkel

We have the privilege of meeting our next guest, Anthony Kunkal, in his mountain home nestled on the outskirts of Durango. It's a place that perfectly reflects his adventurous and unconventional spirit.

Our encounter with Anthony was marked by a serendipitous moment as we spotted him running up a hill in his signature neon shorts—a true long-distance runner. A brief roadside chat confirmed our meeting, and we ventured up the winding road to his home. A spontaneous decision led us to an icy-cold pool, where we engaged in a pre-interview conversation, immersing ourselves both in water and dialogue.

As we settled into his cozy home, Anthony's background emerged. Raised in a military family, he experienced a childhood punctuated by frequent moves, adapting to new locations every few years. Christian teachings were a part of his early life, yet he felt a deeper alignment with Buddhist principles than any formal religious doctrine.

Anthony's life takes a remarkable trajectory—one marked by his pursuit of an unconventional lifestyle. He transformed one of his home's bedrooms into a dorm-like space, inviting individuals to stay for a modest fee while immersing themselves in training and learning. His financial structure relies on sponsorship funds to facilitate his training, and his lifestyle revolves around self-focused competition, except for those moments of sharing and teaching that balance his existence.

Through Anthony's narrative, we gain insights into the unique perspective of a professional athlete—a life driven by passion and dedication. He shares the poignant story of a friend from his Denver training days, a friend with whom he shared a brotherhood of understanding. Yet, the demands of his own chosen path led to a disconnection, and tragically, his friend took his own life. Anthony reflects on the weight of carrying that news, acknowledging it during intense training sessions but deferring the emotional unpacking.

Anthony describes his approach as "the artist's way." Engaging with him through The Jar offers a profound window into the inner workings and sacrifices of professional athletes. Anthony's commitment to his passion and his willingness to forego conventional comforts to chase his dreams provide a captivating narrative that underscores the beauty of unwavering dedication.

Join us and The Jar as Anthony unveils his life's journey, exploring the highs, the sacrifices, and the art of the athlete's path.

#292 Therapy for Chefs: Blaine Bailey's Nonprofit Revolution

#292 Therapy for Chefs: Blaine Bailey's Nonprofit Revolution

We step into the world of our next guest, Blaine Bailey, right in the heart of downtown Durango, at a vibrant coworking space known as The Hive.

Blaine's story begins in the quiet landscape of small-town Arkansas, where he spent his childhood with his sister and their engineer father. As he grew, his perspectives on spirituality took an agnostic turn. With two years of college under his belt, he set his sights on a ski bum's dream, an aspiration that led him to the mountains until an unfortunate shoulder injury put an end to that chapter.

Returning to Arkansas, Blaine found his calling in culinary school, embracing the art of food and flavors. His journey eventually led him to Wisconsin, where he contributed to the management of a small restaurant, honing his skills and exploring his passion.

A fateful call from a friend in Durango, Colorado, opened a new door for Blaine. What seemed like a gentle offer of work in a kitchen evolved into a pivotal moment—he was thrust into the bustling heart of the culinary world. As he navigated the pressures of the industry, he was not immune to its vices—late nights, substances, and stress.

While the exhilaration of the culinary world was undeniable, Blaine felt a growing desire to step away. The turning point came with a tragedy—an encounter with the impact of addiction firsthand when a fellow chef succumbed to heroin in 2015. This heart-wrenching experience ignited Blaine's determination to channel his energy into something meaningful.

Drawing from his own mental health journey, Blaine transformed his pain into purpose. He founded "Therapy for Chefs," a nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health awareness within the food service industry. Today, Blaine is fully immersed in managing "In the Weeds," working to create a healthier environment for culinary professionals, where their well-being is valued as much as their craft.

Blaine's story is a testament to the power of turning adversity into change, of taking one's own struggles and weaving them into a greater purpose. With The Jar as our guide, we embark on a journey alongside Blaine, exploring the highs, lows, and the transformative impact of pursuing one's calling.

#291 Harnessing Hyper-Focus: Miguel Medina's ADHD and Ultrarunning

#291 Harnessing Hyper-Focus: Miguel Medina's ADHD and Ultrarunning

Our next guest, Miguel Medina, graciously welcomed us into his home nestled in the Santa Fe hills. As we settled into his garage, a space transformed into his sanctuary, we couldn't help but feel the powerful energy that emanates from this long-distance and obstacle runner. Miguel stands among a select few individuals on this planet who have pushed the limits of human endurance beyond 100 miles, defying the boundaries that most of us perceive as unattainable.

Miguel's journey began in Torrance, California, where he was born into a family with diverse backgrounds. His father worked in TV production, and his parents' divorce led to a life marked by relocations between Mexico and California.

About a decade ago, Miguel's path led him to Durango, a location that became his training ground and a hub for ultra-running athletes. During this time, he found love and companionship with his fiancée, who shares his home and his life's journey.

Our conversation delved into the challenges of maintaining a deep passion for an art or sport while simultaneously nurturing a personal relationship. Miguel candidly shared the sacrifices that often accompany such dedication and the delicate balance required to harmonize these facets of life.

One of the intriguing aspects Miguel discussed was how his ADHD, often considered a challenge, becomes an asset during training. The hyper-focus that accompanies his condition allows him to immerse himself completely, achieving a state of meditation that excludes all external distractions, even his own sense of self, during his grueling 24-hour runs.

Miguel's journey also encountered a significant hurdle during his time as a student at UCLA, when he temporarily lost feeling in his legs and found himself on crutches and even a wheelchair. This unexpected twist, however, didn't deter him from pursuing his passion and rising to his remarkable accomplishments.

Beyond his role as a professional athlete, Miguel also works as a medical interpreter, a career he deeply values. Helping people navigate challenging medical situations resonates with him, and he believes it's his calling to be a compassionate guide for those in need.

Join us as we delve into Miguel's life, exploring the dedication, passion, and sacrifices that drive a professional athlete, and yet, at the same time, embrace the beauty and regularity of living a balanced life.

Years passed, and Susan's path led her to stay in Indianapolis, where she got married and became a mother to five daughters. However, when her youngest daughter turned five, Susan had a pivotal moment. She confronted her husband, expressing her inability to continue living in their current circumstances. In response, he agreed and walked away from their lives. Other than one brief visit several months later, he vanished from their world.

#289 Heritage and Entrepreneurial Grit: Susanna Dy's Immigrant Odyssey

#289 Heritage and Entrepreneurial Grit: Susanna Dy's Immigrant Odyssey

Step into the welcoming atmosphere of Durango, where we meet our next guest, Susanna Dy, at a friend's home. Susanna's roots trace back to a rich tapestry of heritage, as the daughter of two immigrants: her father from China and her mother from the Philippines. Their journey began in Canada, where Susanna was born, and her parents embodied the quintessential immigrant spirit—grit, determination, and an unyielding commitment to better their family's future.

Listening to Susanna recount her father's progression through various jobs and the businesses he established, then closed and reopened, is nothing short of inspiring. Her parents' journey from Canada to Michigan and eventually to Virginia Beach unfolded as they followed family ties and pursued opportunities for entrepreneurship.

Susanna absorbed the work ethic of her parents from an early age, often finding herself in the kitchen of her father's restaurants before and after school. This experience instilled in her a profound understanding of diligence, perseverance, and the value of hard work.

Balancing her innate artistic inclinations and talents with her family's practical work ethic presented a unique challenge for Susanna. While her heart resided in the realm of artistic expression, societal norms often prioritize practical pursuits over creativity.

As Susanna's parents transitioned to life in San Francisco, their health struggles with diabetes ignited a spark within her. This inspiration led her to create supplements that catered to their needs, emphasizing sugar-free alternatives.

Journey with us through Susanna's recollections of her childhood, her navigation of the delicate balance between creativity and practicality, and her transformation into the remarkable individual she is today. The Jar provides a platform for Susanna to share her story, offering insights into the complexities of heritage, personal aspirations, and the convergence of creativity and practicality.

#288 A Serendipitous Shift: How One Moment Lead me to Capturing More with Hannah Rita

Step into the serene ambiance of the Grand County Public Library in Moab as we introduce our next guest, Hannah Rita. Originating from the northeastern region of Georgia, Hannah's story unfolds against a backdrop of family bonds interwoven with music. Tragedy struck her young life when her mother passed away when she was a mere six years old, but the strains of music echoed through her family, with her siblings sharing her musical inclination.

Hannah's early life was marked by isolation, which led her to find solace in her grandparents' care. At the age of 16, she was sent to live with her grandparents, and by 18, they encouraged her to stand on her own two feet. Armed with determination, she embarked on a journey that saw her earning her GED and pursuing a path in nursing, which later evolved into a passion for teaching.

An unexpected twist of fate brought Hannah into the world of photography. A seemingly accidental invitation to assist at a wedding as a photographer's assistant handed her a camera and, at that very moment, transformed her into a wedding photographer. As the years flowed by, she expanded her portfolio, diving into entrepreneurial endeavors here and there, always listening to the guidance of a higher power. It's these subtle nudges that have now led her to venture into coaching, sharing her wealth of knowledge as a photography coach.

#286 Enriching Souls: Hospice Chaplain, Counselor, Moab Art Director, and Somatic Archaeology with Christy Williams

We have the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Christy Williams, in the heart of Moab, Utah, at the KZMU FM studios—a renowned NPR community station known for its unique blend of public radio, broadcasting on frequencies 90.1 and 106.7 FM. Christy's presence is felt not just through the airwaves, but in the hearts of those who have come to know her as a DJ and radio talk show host for many years.

Christy's lifelong affinity for music has been a constant thread in her narrative. Even as young as three, she can vividly recall moments spent in Missouri with her parents, where she was captivated by Annie Williams and her musical talents. Singing and performing "Moon River" for her parents remains an early memory etched in her mind.

Growing up in Kansas City, her passion for music found an outlet in the high school choir. A pivotal figure emerged during those years—a teacher who believed in her, providing the inspiration and encouragement that can alter the trajectory of one's life. It's a testament to the profound impact a single individual can have, shaping the course of someone's journey.

Christy's connection to her community runs deep, and her giving nature reflects this bond. Her roles as a Grand County Hospice Chaplain, counselor, somatic archaeologist, and Moab Art Director exemplify her commitment to enriching the lives of those around her. Furthermore, her partnership with a holistic and spiritual individual mirrors her own growth journey.

As she recounts her experiences, Christy imparts a valuable lesson—her path was not immune to poor judgments and challenging choices. Yet, it's these very decisions that have led her to the most extraordinary and fulfilling journeys. It's a reminder to embrace life boldly, make choices that resonate with your true self, and trust that life's journey will catch you when you stumble.

Join us and Christy as we delve into The Jar, navigating her unique story, her connection to music, and her unwavering commitment to her community.

#287 Heart-Wrenching Choices: My Decision to Leave and Pursue Dreams with Angie Nicol

Step into the vibrant world of our next guest, Angie Nicol, as we find ourselves in the enchanting setting of Moab on a tranquil Monday morning. Angie's story unfolds against the backdrop of the '60s, a time of cultural transformation, as she grew up in Moab, where her father toiled as a dedicated uranium miner while her mother fulfilled her role as a homemaker, all within the embrace of the Mormon faith.

As life led her down the path of single motherhood, Angie embarked on a journey that took her to Colorado Springs. Amidst the challenges of raising her children as a single mother, Angie faced a heart-wrenching decision that would echo through the years - leaving her daughter behind in the pursuit of a new life for herself and her son.

With determination etched into her spirit, Angie pursued her studies with unwavering dedication, eventually emerging from college with honors. Her career trajectory soared to great heights, leading her to a demanding job in Salt Lake City. However, the relentless pressure and demanding schedule took their toll, causing Angie's health to decline drastically. Stranded in a city without the support of friends and family, she found herself returning to her hometown of Moab.

Angie's life has been anything but ordinary. Imagine growing up in the shadow of a father who was a rugged uranium miner and an outdoorsman, while her mother fulfilled her nurturing role. Amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Moab, Angie's personality thrived, and at the tender age of 19, she courageously came out as a lesbian, navigating the complexities of small-town life during a time when acceptance was far from common.

Join us for an exhilarating and captivating interview as Angie takes us on a journey through The Jar. Through her anecdotes and reflections, we gain insight into her wild and diverse life experiences, from being a single mom to her academic accomplishments and her identity journey.
