    6 lesser-known facts about Netflix's popular sci-fi anime that's making waves

    6 lesser-known facts about Netflix's popular sci-fi anime that's making waves
Acclaimed Japanese Mangaka Naoki Urasawa’s beloved manga series PLUTO received an anime adaptation produced by Genco, which premiered on Netflix on October 26, 2023. The series is inspired by Astro Boy, one of the pioneering works in the history of Japanese manga and anime by Osamu Tezuka. The series follows Gesicht, an AI detective who attempts to uncover the identity of Pluto — a serial killer targeting the most advanced robots in the world, including the iconic Astro Boy Atom himself, in his quest to become the pinnacle of all machine life-forms. Things keep escalating as Gesicht also understands that he himself might be in danger. The show has been created by Naoki Urasawa and directed by Toshio Kawaguchi, with stellar voice-acting performances by Shinshu Fuji, Yoko Hikasa, Minori Suzuki, Hiroki Yasumoto, and Koichi Yamadera among others. So on today's edition of Now You Know, we take a closer look at some lesser-known facts about Pluto.

Justice League: This animated series that packs more compelling tales than modern superhero films

Justice League: This animated series that packs more compelling tales than modern superhero films
Justice League is widely regarded as one of the greatest American animated shows of all time, a sharp contrast to the ill-fated 2017 film adaptation which was dismissed by fans and critics alike at the time of release. The animated series, although originally intended for children, features mature socio-political themes focusing on freewill, imperialism, authoritarianism, and class disparity. It also explored various scientific theories such as ‘wormholes’ in some of the episodes that focused on science fiction. On the surface, the series might give one the impression of being just another animated series produced essentially for children. However, just like Batman the Animated Series, Justice League is rich with subtext featuring philosophical undertones. Some of the stories have also gone on to inspire Marvel’s films and TV shows. For instance, the MCU TV series WandaVision may have been marketed as a loose adaptation of the iconic Marvel comic book House of M, but the TV show’s similarity to the storyline in Justice League episodes 16 and 17 titled Legends is undeniable. Similarly, time-travelling superheroes were introduced to the mainstream consciousness by Justice League long before Avengers: Endgame.

Lets take a look at one episode of an animated TV show from the 90s that may or may not reference Evil Dead and includes a character that may or may not be inspired by Ash Williams...

The series is set to release on July 20th and is among several shows premiering in July celebrating African culture.

    'Good Burger 2' announces sequel

The cult classic comedy film Good Burger is getting a sequel, nearly 26 years after its release. 'Gattaca' reboot scrapped by Showtime

American cable network Showtime announced in March that the studio is rebooting the acclaimed sci-fi film Gattaca. The original film stars Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman in lead roles, and the new reboot series roped in Emmy Award-winners Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa to helm the project. However, Showtime has announced that they will not be moving ahead with the project. The series is among the several shows being cancelled as the new leadership at the studio is reviewing all of their existing programs. The creators of the Gattaca reboot are currently looking for new partners to release the sci-fi series.

The 30th Anniversary Of Batman: The Animated Series

The 30th Anniversary Of Batman: The Animated Series

    C’mon, it’s episode #27.

The first ever episode of Storytelling Breakdown was a dive into the world of Batman. We return to that well today to celebrate 30 years since Batman: The Animated Series first aired on this date in 1992. For this conversation we are joined by Todd Espeland, executive and artistic director at Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

Batman: The Animated Series has a lasting legacy in part because of its unique art style, blending old and new to create a timeless feel set against backdrops drawn on black paper. The character designs are iconic, pulling inspiration from the comic book source material and creating new stories that would find their way into all sorts of media. The show’s largest footprint now may be the creation of the definitive Mr. Freeze origin story and the addition of Harley Quinn to the world of Batman.

The voice acting performances are brilliant. The show won multiple Emmy awards for sound design, music, and writing. Original animation cels from the show hang in the Hall of Heroes, where Ben and Caleb visited in 2019 for our season one finale. Todd Espeland was the one who originally recommended the trip. Now, Todd and our team are going to look back at some of the most iconic episodes and dive deep into a show that more than holds up 30 years later.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is the subject of this episode’s Spotlight. We’ll focus on two lovable characters, Willow and Spike. Our guest is Maria Ward. She is introduced around the 01:07:17 mark.

#256: Primetime Emmy Award Winning Foley Artist and Marine Veteran David Bonilla

#256: Primetime Emmy Award Winning Foley Artist and Marine Veteran David Bonilla

David Bonilla grew up in El Monte, California, where, as a child, he had the opportunity to be involved with a few film projects. Through his mother’s connections, he gained both experience in the film industry and an interest in filming and directing. He initially had no plans to join the military, but when a recruiter offered to buy him lunch, his life found a new direction.

Bonilla discusses his deployments overseas to Baghdad and his position as part of the logistics team during the Gulf War. There, he experienced what it was really like to be in the field and understand what a near death experience was like.

After completing his service and later a college degree, Bonilla landed a position at Solar City, a company under Elon Musk. While working at Solar City, Bonilla’s assistant noticed how he was struggling with panic attacks and helped guide him to VA. This led him to VR&E, where he found purpose and goals in life.

Now finished with his military path, Bonilla returned to his early love of the film industry and began studying audio by using his GI Bill benefits. He started working as a foley artist, eventually winning an Emmy for his work on Disney’s Eleanor of Avalor.

    In this episode, Bonilla discusses:

    • His experiences in the military
    • Working in the film industry
    • Working for Raytheon
    • His time at a company under Elon Musk
    • His projects as a sound engineer, including Disney’s Eleanor of Avalor
