The Mechanical 'Turk': Wouldn't You Prefer a Good Game Of Chess?

The Mechanical 'Turk': Wouldn't You Prefer a Good Game Of Chess?

During the 18th century, early animatronics were hot. They were featured in circuses, carnivals, and other touring exhibitions, and were usually built and operated with various parts like axles, chains, cogs, gears, levers, pulleys, wheels, wind-up keys – you get the point. For Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, in 1769, Hungarian inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen’s created the Mechanical Turk, a chess-playing machine that could beat almost any person who played against it. The Turk appeared to be a fully functional artificial intelligence to those who saw and interacted with it. It left audiences delighted, but baffled as to how it worked -- until a young poet named Edgar Allan Poe convinced many audiences it was not what it seemed.

The Rise and Fall of Chuck E Cheese

The Rise and Fall of Chuck E Cheese

Chuck E. Cheese. Where a kid can be a kid and adults can be absolute animals.

Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari, had another money making idea. Bring arcades out of pool halls and bars and place them inside family restaurants.

When Disney wouldn't hire him, he decided to bring Disney style animatronics to his restaurants. Chuck E. Cheese, Mr. Munch, Pasqually and the rest of the crew were soon putting on shows for countless kids across the country.

Somewhere along the way, Chuck E. Cheese restaurants became magnets for murder, fights and a host of other legal issues. Nearly forty years later, they're still going strong. What is it that we love... and hate... about Chuck E. Cheese.

And how did one man take the idea of animatronics coming to life and turn it into a million dollar video game, movie, toy and book franchise with Five Nights at Freddy's?

Talking Self-Value, Career Trajectory, and More With VR/Tech Coordinator Michelle House

This week on SPR, Zak and Aaron chat with Michelle House to discuss her job as a VR/Technology Coordinator at Pure Imagination Studios, her journey in media, and the importance of valuing yourself in business. They also spend a fair amount of time discussing food poisoning and other various gastrointestinal maladies. It's fun, it's dumb, and when Michelle talks, it's rather insightful. What more could you ask for in a podcast?

    Please, enjoy.

    35. Willy's Wonderland (2021)

    35. Willy's Wonderland (2021)

(A Ben and Fiona episode - prepare for an Irish potty mouth and bullshit trivia)

"Strap on your balls, Fiona; we're off to record an episode on Willy's Wonderland", were the words lovingly scribbled into Fiona's Valentine's card. And, as luck would have it, this episode was recorded on the big day and thus could double up as Fiona's Valentine's day gift, phew!

We find Nic cage silently making his way through an array of chatty satanic-possessed cuddly animatronics, which are definitely not found in Five Nights at Freddy's, The Banana Splits Movie or Child's Play.

The young cast, YouTubers, and all could have done with following Cage's lead and remaining mute throughout.

Mercifully, a beret sporting Alligator finally puts pay to Bob and his Harley Quinn GF; I had a super happy fun time watching the couple get slaughtered. Maybe popping on to youtube and looking up 80's slasher teen deaths may have helped Bob and co avoid becoming a cliché

"Pass me a sick bucket as that acting be wicked!"

If I could ask G.O. Parsons, the creator of this carnage, one thing, it would be the following: Where could a man procure himself a beret similar to the one so elegantly sported by Arty Alligator?

Oh, and to explain to Fiona why he made Nic Cage's character 'The Janitor' mute, she couldn't get past it. So, two questions, please, G.O.!

(We had a great time with the film btw G.O. Parsons, but we also like to have fun over here at FilmFloggers episode notes)

    Fight vs Flight

    Fight vs Flight
This week, we give Party Town and JimCity some exciting robot based attractions after having a goof around a quiz about audio-animatronics. Who knew a sax-playing fish was part of the American Adventure? Anyway, first up, Scottye brings guests on board some jaegers to do some battle Pacific Rim-style. Oh, and you might also be drunk...'cause guess who else is a sponsor? Then, Jim shows his true colors as he forces(???) guests to undergo some ed-jim-ucation, only for them to predictably go on the run from robots. It's just like community college, except slightly better funded.
