Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP14: Such Sweet Sorrow Pt 2

The season two finale is upon us and Ebony and Anita prepare for all the emotional hurdles this show throws our way. But let’s be real, a season finale on the scale that only Discovery can provide begs A LOT OF QUESTIONS. We have so many questions that we will never have answers for. But Ebony does get a resolution to the one question that has been haunting her for years.

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP13: "Such Sweet Sorrow"

We're so close to the end of Star Trek Discovery's second season, but before we press the self-destruct button on the Recap FREQcast, let's race through some space corridors and figure out what happened in this week's episode! Anita is off taking time suit flying lessons, so Ebony was joined in the Keanu Reeves Memorial Studio by psychologist and Star Trek cheerleader, Ali Mattu for a rundown of all the fist-pumping moments "Such Sweet Sorrow" gave us.

Check out Dr. Mattu's efforts to make psychology fun and easy to understand --and listen to him break down the psychology of science fiction at his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/thepsychshowdotcom

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP11: "Perpetual Infinity"

Anita manages to overcome sickness and adversity this week to lounge in the captain's chair for a rip-roaring* discussion of the latest episode of Star Trek Discovery! This week we discuss the resilience of the powerful mother trope; the developing sibling relationship between Spock and Burnham; and when to just stop asking questions about the technobabble and embrace the timey-wimey loopiness.

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP10: "Red Angel"

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP10: "Red Angel"

This week’s episode is a wild hayride of emotion for your two intrepid hosts (just kidding, we keep it pretty chill)! Joining us on the pod is writer, video producer, and Star Trek fan Steve Shives, who does a pretty good job of keeping things rational and coherent. Tune in and listen to Anita introduce a new segment (“The Costume Corner”); nod along as Ebony vibes to Spock and Burnham’s sibling snark; and clap vigorously as Steve confirms that DS9 is amazing, the end, no arguments.

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP08: "If Memory Serves"

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP08: "If Memory Serves"

In this week's episode, Ebony is joined again by "slightly delusional Star Trek fangirl" Francine Crockett, aka Spock Jones. Rather than make more easily-Googleable errors about TOS continuity, Ebony decided it was better to bring back an actual Trek expert (a "trek-xpert," if you will) to break down for us all the ins-and-outs of this week's journey to Talos IV. Join us as we break down our reactions to this episode's deeply emotional moments; the welcome upgrades to the Talosians and Tellurites; and whether Giorgiou could be any more perfect.

Shout out to @cezar_turcanu for sharing his Red Angel theory. Go watch the short Trek"Calypso" and you'll know what we're talking about!

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP07: "Light and Shadows"

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP07: "Light and Shadows"

Anita gets a little too excited when her one night stand (Tyler) and her future husband (Pike) are on an away mission together. We finally meet Disco Spock and well, that just sort of happened. There are some weird gender roles happening on Vulcan that we ain’t to happy about. Plus Ebony is not having any of baby vulcan hair.

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP06: "Sounds of Thunder"

In this weeks episode of the Star Trek Discovery Recap FREQcast, Ebony and Anita are joined in Ten Forward by overly enthusiastic Star Trek fan, Sarah Gulde. Guided by her expertise, your two feckless hosts attempt to step up their game and discuss their reactions to this week's episode in a coherent, informed manner [spoiler alert: they are unable to sustain it]. Tune in for a conversation about the compelling emotive work of Doug Jones as Saru, what first contact would actually be like, and whether Anita and Sarah can convince Ebony to give Pike a chance.

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP05: "Saints of Imperfection"

Ebony has fallen out an airlock this week so Anita is holding down the fort for Star Trek Discovery's S02E05 "Saints of Imperfection". Joining her is special guest Jarrah Hodge, co-host of the Women at Warp podcast. Listen in while we lament all the Bad Science nonsense, grapple with the direction of season two and hear a very sad attempt by Anita to hold up the hair report.

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP04: "An Obol for Charon"

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP04: "An Obol for Charon"

Anita is back and just in time for all the wild antics of Episode 4: An Obol for Charon (which apparently is pronounced karon and what even is an obol-- spoilers: we will not be answering any of these questions). But we will dive into what this episode gets so right and what it bumbles around on. Who can resist a dying civilization? And a dying best friend? And oh god the waterworks. Ebony asks what is up with Burnham's wig and Anita is thankful for Tilly's hair which is the gift that keeps on giving.

The Star Trek Discovery Recap FREQcast brings you a gift from the Mirror Universe this week: a special guest! Ebony is joined by an old friend and fellow Trekkie as she attempts to navigate the treacherous currents of this week's episode without Anita there to offer snarky comments from the brig. Join Ebony and Francine, a self-identified "slightly delusional Star Trek fangirl" for a conversation about nostalgia, omnipotent aliens, and why those Party City Klingon wigs have got to go.

Star Trek Discovery | S02, EP02: "New Eden"

Anita and Ebony are back on bridge duty this week with Feminist Frequency Star Trek Discovery Recap FREQcast, deciphering narrative arcs, giving hair reports, steering through the highly illogical, and generally questioning what keeps us watching other than Tilly.

In this week's show, we share our reactions to the second episode of Discovery's second season, New Eden, and unpack what worked for us [more stuff than last week]; what didn't work [less stuff than last week]; And our frustration that Pike looks so good in a leather jacket.

It's here! The long-awaited return of the not-at-all inconveniently named Feminist Frequency Star Trek Discovery Recap FREQcast! Anita and Ebony are back on bridge duty, deciphering narrative arcs, steering through plot[worm]holes, and generally questioning what lead them to start this podcast in the first place.

In this week's show, we share our reactions to the first episode of Discovery's second season and unpack what worked for us [some stuff]; what didn't work [quite a bit more stuff]; and our utter confusion about who is going to be doing Baby Burnham's hair on Vulcan. 39: BlacKkKlansman

    39: BlacKkKlansman

This week, Anita, Ebony and Carolyn are going deep undercover with Spike Lee’s latest film, BlacKkKlansman, based on the true story of Ron Stallworth, a black Colorado Springs police officer who successfully infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan, in a manner of speaking. We talk about how the film engages directly with cinematic history, from white supremacist films like Birth of a Nation to blaxploitation classics like Shaft, the frustrating ways in which it positions the police force as an institution as heroic, and the roles women play among both the black political activists and the white supremacists the film focuses on.

We also cover some of the latest pop culture news from the world of video games, discuss our complicated feelings on the idea of Idris Elba (yay!) as James Bond (boo!), and share some stuff worth celebrating in What’s Your Freq-Out!

    #38: Mission: Impossible - Fallout

On this week’s episode, Anita’s off on a top-secret assignment, no doubt saving the world from the evil forces of anti-feminism, so Carolyn and Ebony hold down the fort at FemFreq HQ by diving into the international intrigue of Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Join us as we discuss hero Ethan Hunt’s moral convictions, the not-so-magical way in which the film makes millions of brown people disappear, how the IMF is both the cause of and solution to the world’s problems, what makes M:I a cinematically interesting franchise as a whole, and lots more!

In addition, we explore our feelings about the news of Jean-Luc Picard’s impending return, and Carolyn shares some YouTube videos that have been whisking her away to a cozy and relaxing fantasy world. We also present a FREQ-Out from one of our listeners! Remember, we want to hear from you, too, so head on over to feministfrequency.com/freqout and send us your FREQ-Out today!

Cinemaball 09: Night On Earth (1991)

Cinemaball 09: Night On Earth (1991)
This week on Cinemaball, Ebony and Carolyn go on a globe-hopping adventure via the 1991 Jim Jarmusch anthology film Night on Earth! From Winona Ryder in Los Angeles to Armin Mueller-Stahl in New York and beyond, five cab drivers in five cities participate in the carnival of human life, in all its whimsy, happenstance, joy, and sorrow. Listen as we discuss Jarmusch’s knack for capturing the beauty of lived-in places, the gentle compassion the film has for its characters, and how, looking back on this film from the present era of Uber and Lyft, there’s a melancholy sense that we’re glimpsing a fading world. As your “sommoviers,” we also offer suggestions for films to pair with Night on Earth, and Ebony announces what film we’ll be watching next week.

    35: Sorry to Bother You!

    35: Sorry to Bother You!

This week on Feminist Frequency Radio, we discuss Boots Riley’s wild, unforgettable comedy of race, class, labor and capitalism, Sorry to Bother You! It’s a gem of distinctly Oakland storytelling that’s very relevant for the moment in history at which we find ourselves, and we explore the ways in which it sharply blends comedy and critique to create a uniquely piercing work of cultural commentary that’s also tremendously entertaining. We also take a moment to talk about how, for all its wonderful aspects, Sorry to Bother You doesn’t do right by its female characters.

We also talk about the not-so-super comments on flirting and dating from Henry Cavill, the harmful laziness of Trump/Putin gay “jokes,” and other assorted pop culture happenings. Anita shares some fascinating animal facts and has an epiphany about what paraphrasing means. Our producer Phil knows everybody in Oakland.

34: Ant-Man and The Wasp with Special Guest Jamie Loftus

#34: Ant-Man and The Wasp with Special Guest Jamie Loftus

This week on FFR, special guest Jamie Loftus joins us to discuss the pop culture news of the week and the latest cinematic appetizer from Marvel, Ant-Man and The Wasp. Jamie is a hilarious comic, Zamboni-lover, and co-host of The Bechdel Cast. Topics under the feminist microscope this week include the ever-eroding distinction between public and private as demonstrated by the recent #planebae love-fest across social media; Scarlett Johansson staying on (problematic) brand; and the thrilling refusal of Serena Williams to ever diminish herself in the face of white male critique. Once the Ant-Man discussion gets going, your hosts tackle the film's frustrating villains, the absurd logic of the quantum realm, and just how much Paul Rudd anyone really needs.

    CinemaBall 08: Hard Target (1993)

    CinemaBall 08: Hard Target (1993)
This week on Cinemaball, Carolyn scores a field goal with the John Woo-directed Jean-Claude Van Damme action flick, Hard Target! It’s got JCVD as a New Orleans drifter named Chance Boudreaux, Lance Henriksen in a scenery-chewing performance as Emil Fouchon, a man who makes his fortune by letting rich people hunt poor people, and Wilford Brimley as Chance’s Uncle Douvee. (It’s also got a scene in which Van Damme punches a snake.) It may not be a good film, but it sure is a fun one, and Ebony and Carolyn savor the film’s Louisiana setting, its seeming concern with the economic struggles of New Orleans and its people, and the glorious Woo-ness of it all.
