    Blood Thinners

    Blood Thinners

Welcome everyone to the Melanin Initiative!

“In healthcare, there is often too much information and not enough time. Here at The Melanin Initiative, we avoid TMI by breaking things down into language you can understand, we create a safe space to ask your questions, and share our nursing perspective without taking too much of your time."

Today we're talking about anticoagulants or blood thinners.
By the end of the episode, our goal is that you’ll be able to discuss:

    • What blood thinners do and why they’re prescribed
    • Lifestyle changes for those taking blood thinners
    • Popular blood thinners and what to know about them
    • Safety considerations
      • Dietary choices
      • Herbal supplements
      • Falls

The Hospitalist (Vol 17, Issue 12)

The Hospitalist (Vol 17, Issue 12)
This month in our issue, we look at the challenges and rewards of palliative care practice. Dr. Porter Storey, the Executive Vice President of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine explains how palliative care can help physicians truly meet patients’ needs and goals. Also featured on our cover this month is the story, Ten Things Urologists Think Hospitalists Need to Know, with insight into common urological problems and a review of recommendations on urinary catheterization. Elsewhere in this issue, experts discuss improving outcomes for patients with atrial fibrillation and our key clinical question addresses when anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents should be restarted after a gastrointestinal bleed.

Rethinking Anticoagulants: Interview with Yoash Enzer, MD

Rethinking Anticoagulants: Interview with Yoash Enzer, MD
A conversation between Robert Goldberg, MD, and Yoash Enzer, MD. All patients on aspirin or warfarin were once advised to stop taking these anticoagulants two weeks before surgery. But new evidence shows that many patients suffer serious thrombotic events as a result, underscoring the need for a more measured approach. In today’s discussion, Dr. Yoash Enzer, clinical associate professor at Brown University, offers practical advice on how to balance the risk of bleeding with the risk of thromboembolism.
