Unboxing the EU’s medical devices rules

Unboxing the EU’s medical devices rules

This week, EURACTIV's health journalists Marta Iraola and Gerardo Fortuna dig into the troubled implementation of the new framework for medical devices in Europe which entered into force in 2021. When developers of medical devices started experiencing problems in meeting the deadlines for implementing the key rules of the new regulation, the EU lawmakers decided to postpone the application of certain provisions of these new rules. To get a better grasp of what happened, we spoke to the European Commission spokesperson in charge of health Stefan de Keersmaecker, the policy officer at the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) Julie Spony, and the CEO of MedTech Europe Oliver Bisazza.

SCCM Pod-468: When Should Antibiotics Be Used to Treat Respiratory Infections?

SCCM Pod-468: When Should Antibiotics Be Used to Treat Respiratory Infections?
Although only a small number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 present with a secondary bacterial pneumonia, a large percentage are unnecessarily treated with antibiotics. Pamela M. Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP, FACSM, is joined by George Sakoulas, MD, to discuss how physicians and hospitalists can identify when antibiotics are unnecessary for hospitalized patients with moderate to severe respiratory infections. Dr. Sakoulas is chief of infectious disease at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group in San Diego, California, and an adjunct professor in the Division of Host-Microbe Systems and Therapeutics Center for Immunity, Infection, and Inflammation at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine in La Jolla, California. This podcast is sponsored by bioMérieux.

The pros and cons of antibiotics

The pros and cons of antibiotics

Indiscriminate use of antimicrobials affects not just the bugs that cause disease but also our friendly resident microbes and contributes to antimicrobial resistance. How can we develop new therapies for effective treatment of infections without causing resistance? What is stopping new antimicrobial development?

Speakers: Dr Karen Scott (Senior Research Fellow, Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen) and Dr Soumya Palliyil (Head of Scottish Biologics Facility)

    3. Antimicrobial Pharmacology with Dr. Josh Monester

    3. Antimicrobial Pharmacology with Dr. Josh Monester

Gentamicin, chloramphenicol and penicillins galore, this episode has ALL the good stuff! I am joined by Dr. Josh Monester, an ED registrar and enthusiastic medical educator. Together, we take on the tough (and often quite dry) topic of antimicrobial pharmacology, with a few sneaky tips here and there to help you remember the important things. Don't be scared off by the idea of reciting the pharmacokinetics of everything in the drug cupboard, just relax and let the methodical approach permeate your brain. Hopefully this helps some if it stick in there!

Antibiotics and Food Animals: By the Numbers

Antibiotics and Food Animals: By the Numbers

On this episode, co-hosts Lance B. Price from the Antibiotic Resistance Action Center and Matt Wellington from US PIRG dig into an annual report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that summarizes sales of antibiotics used in U.S. food animal production. The co-hosts explain both the significance and limitations of the report, which showed a nearly 10% increase in antibiotics sold for food animals from 2017 to 2018. Listeners will learn which animals species are "hogging" most of the antibiotics and how the U.S. compares with some European countries.

New antimicrobials show promise in battle against superbug - Naked Scientists Special Editions 17.09.16
    C. diff - or Clostridium difficile - is a superbug that can cause major problems in hospitals. It leads to life-threatening diarrhoea and intestinal inflammation in patients who catch it, it spreads easily, and patients who do recover often relapse many times afterwards because the spectrum of so-called "good bacteria" in the bowel also goes off-kilter when you treat the infection. What's needed are highly-targeted antibiotics that can hit exclusively c. diff and not affect the good bacteria that we need to keep us healthy. Luckily, Sheffield University's Joe Kirk is on the case...
